Horsfall Lansing Variety Store - In all its glory

Did you know that you needed a Packers sweatshirt?* Neither did I…read more Horsfalls convinced me of that, not through any high pressure sales tactics, but rather, through price. You'll end up with a lot of deals and possibly a wheelbarrow full of junk and a much lighter wallet or checkbook, if you're not careful. New wallet? Check. Spices? Check. Rubber spatulas? Check. Walking stick? Check. Hunting socks? Check. Hawkeye calendar? Check. Wait, none of that was on my list! And I don't even go hunting or even like the Hawkeyes, aagh! I hate you and love you, Horsfalls! The owner is great to talk to and his mind is razor sharp. Be sure to visit both locations for maximum wheeling and dealing. You can curse me later. * It's my favorite sweatshirt, so I'm actually quite happy.

Lots of street parking available. Beware it is hilly and the curbs are really high. They also put lots of merchandise tables on the sidewalk in front of the store (weather permitting). The owner and his staff are really friendly and helpful. The aisles can get crowded and you can and will get stuck multiple times. This store is huge and packed to the hilt with almost anything you can think of. You can snag great deals on everything. I bought a bunch of hardcover journals, seventh generation soaps, toys, dishes and other random items, for less than $20. They carry close outs, overstocks and weird items. If you need something, you will find it here. They do have a second location just west of this location on the same block. Be sure to check out the second location too. If you are in the area, this is definitely a place to stop by and stock up on unique and useful items.

Almost all Kwik Star (and Kwik Trip if you're in Wisconsin or Minnesota) stores are laid out with a…read moresimilar floor plan, there are a few different floor plans depending on the footprint of the store and when it was built. Some are mirror images of one another, which I refer to as left hand stores and right hand stores, depending on which way you turn to approach the cash registers. This is a right hand store. When you go into the store, you'll get that feeling of Deja vu, which is exactly what the owners want you to feel. This store is newer so it uses the newer floor plan. It's left handed. Karuba Coffee, Dunkers, doughnuts, and hot foods are straight back. Rest rooms are on the far end, take a left at the cooler. Lottery forms are back there, too, for processing at the registers. The no-fee ATMs are to your left as you enter the store. Out on the gas island, you'll find Unleaded, Unleaded Premium, E-85, Unleaded 88, and Diesel #2. The store is 24/7. If you happen to drive an 18-wheeler, there is a separate truck fueling station. It's easy in and easy out with no silly roundabouts to come through. You'll find Diesel #2, Premium Diesel, and Diesel Exhaust Fluid. This is a nearly complete auto and truck plaza, there's no car wash but that's about all that's missing. It's a complete convenience store with sandwiches, coffee and soft drinks and almost anything you could need in the coolers, freezers and food gondolas. Like all Kwik Trips, the bakery all comes from La Crosse and it's pretty good. It's everything you've come to expect in a Kwik Trip and a whole lot more.

So how does a tourist from San Francisco wind up at Sattre?…read more Easy! Miss a turn on a dark Decorah night and start a backroads gravel-kickin' adventure! We didn't actually get into the store - it was after 11pm... but for a couple of lost left-coasters a five-way crossroads tells you to GET HELP! So, we owe a debt of gratitude to the crossroads and Sattre store, which will be forever embedded in our minds and will be an important destination next time we come through the land of the Vikings. Getting straightened out without navigational aids - just enough clouding to block the good ol' North Star - is easier said than done in Decorah when your cellphone is on AT&T.... literally backing up or going forward 20' could be the difference between "NO SERVICE" and one flickering bar. Plagued with cellephonicus interrupticus, we tried getting directions from the front desk at our hotel... but they managed to get us deeper into Iowa's heart of darkness. I asked the hotel desk to give me the number for Decorah police. That took care of it. Just another ten-fifteen on gravel roads and then a sprint to downtown. Victory, so sweet! A three-hour tour, Iowa style. There's a song in there somewhere... hey, how about a few lines.... Never been so lost as I was in Sattre, Yet somehow, it made me sad when I was found. I didn't know that crossroads Could come to mean so much, Yes I'll see you The next time I come around.

Their air compressor is located at the side of their building and I really like it because it's a very heavy duty set up and it does not take long at all but five seconds each tire and their inflated. I then went inside because I kept seeing ads for their new karuba gold espresso drinks. They are having a special that any size was $1.99. The place is very nicely updated and extremely clean. I use the restroom which was clean and smell nice. It's a lot larger than it looks and it seems like they do pretty good business here. They had lots of hot food stocked and ready to go. They have a new machine that makes is espresso drinks. It's a touchscreen screen and you pick if you want to mocha cappuccino latte or an iced drink. You can pick your flavor and size. I went with a caramel latte with extra syrup. It wasn't quite sweet enough for me I wish I would've used some of their syrups they had located over by their coffee creamers. But it was a pretty awesome machine and I really wish I had one at home. The lady who checked me out was very nice. The only thing that would've made this a five-star visit was if I was greeted on my way in and it knowledged by employees who passed me by in the store. I had several of the kitchen helpers passed by me and not say a word. But overall a very strong visit.

They carried a good range from local cheese maker WW Homestead and also had a nice variety of Wisconsin cheeses along with some imports. The cider selection really came as a wonderful surprise, though. I used to cider being given a short shrift compared to beer. Instead, they had a great variety from local cideries, and I even bought a bottle from Belgium! My husband found a few new beers, too. If and when I come here again, I'd love to look through more of the store, even as I check on the cheese and cider anew. This is definitely my kind of place.

It took two staff members 20 minutes to make two sandwiches "made to order". We stood there and had no idea why it was taking forever. They did toast the bread. As pictured, I was glad they had GF bread but it made my sandwich much smaller. I got lettuce, red peppers, "avocado" the green paste you see on the lid, pepperjack and mayo. We bought a large bad of chips and a tea $2.29 and our total for two "no extras" sandwiches, the tea and one bag of chips was $24 and change. Still can't believe how puny the meal was. Only two veggies before you're charged .99 for extras. I expected it would be substantial and filling. Otherwise the store was clean, and has lot of options for foods and natural products.
