Their chopped pork is the best! If it's not for you, try a foot long loaded hot dog and fries. Cheerwine is on tap. It's the local soda. They have tons of Coca-Cola memorabilia and classic cars, too.

Patty melts, foot-longs, and cherry lemon sundrops. What more could a gal want? I know my friend is gonna pick a delicious spot and I'm so glad she chose to bring us here. Everything about this meal was a 12/10 and the place has so much character!

Low and affordable price, it caters to local residents. Lunch time is pack, seems like seniors' favorite place to eat in town. Big portion for such low price also. I like their old decors of old signs and cars. There are even cars inside the restaurants. Problem is their BBQ is not that good. Side items are much better than their main item, maybe because it is easier to make. Fries and onion rings were hot and crispy. BBQ meat taste weird, BBQ sauce is too vinegary and watery. Locals might like it because they are used to it for decades but not someone driving by

This barbecue spot is so nastalgic, prices are EXTREMLY AFFORDABLE, a the food came Out so fast!! The best waitress ever. So sweet and polite. The older crowd here just makes me so proud to be a southern Tar Heel! We got the best setup you can if your trying one of each from out of town. We now live in california and this stop was a MUST for Me And my son. !! Sundrop, sweet tea, pulled pork sandwhich, vinegar sauce, red slaw, fried bologna sandwhich, footlong all the way, hush puppie and onion rings.

I read and looked at the Yelp before going. I was... Well, alarmed when I saw their they seemed up serve Kraft Mac and cheese, which of course my parents and I ordered with our BBQ tray just to verify, and yes, they do Not gonna lie, I love Kraft, so I didn't mind, BUT whatttt an abomination for a down home, BBQ place not to make their own Mac! VERY curious as to the reason why.. But hey, at least you know what you're getting if you research before eating? Also - no greens on the menu?!? Three of us shared 2 BBQ platters - with 2 red slaws, the Kraft Mac, fries, onion rings, the three hush puppies each. The BBQ was good, I liked the slaw too! Hush puppies were very strange honestly, very corn mealy and crumbly - the crust was so.. Like a strange crispy with the dryness. Super super greasy though!

The food was awesome. Service was helpful and wonderful. The atmosphere was stepping into a 1970s classic BBQ place. I couldn't believe how affordable the food was. It was three grown adults and our bill was only $38 and we got a lot of good and quality food.

I am a regular customer at Gary's even though it's a ways from my house. The level of food quality and service have remained consistently high throughout the years. The place is clean. They have a sanitation grade of 96.5. The dining area is clean. They support their servers with a bussing staff that keeps the dining area clean. Many of the servers have worked there for years. It's good see familiar face. Low turnover speaks well of the business. The food is good. I always order a sliced barbecue sandwich with red slaw. Tonight I paired it with a baked potato. My dinner partner ordered a chopped barbecue and an order of homemade onion rings. Everything was delicious. The prices are more than fair. We both for less than $20.

Do you want good old-fashioned authentic barbecue and home cooking? Come here! The friendliest servers all the locals and old timers come here covered in Coca-Cola paraphernalia just the best thing you're gonna do and those hush puppies are amazing crispy on the outside warm on the inside super delicious pork with a bunch of different sauces homemade by Gary!

This is a delightful place filled with great people and nostalgia (especially if you're into vintage VW buses). Service was courteous and prompt, as one would expect in an established eatery located in the middle of NC. The portions and prices were great, but I thought the food was just good. I opted for the combo plate to get a good sampling. The pulled pork was tasty, but IMO, the chicken breast took center stage--perfectly cooked and not a hint of dryness inside. The fries are thick cut and crinkly, crispy on the outside. A few shreds of lettuce and a slice of tomato topped with a dollop of mayo provided a side salad. Based on the reviews I had seen, I was really looking forward to the hush puppies, but they were certainly not the best I've ever had. The extra-finely-grated slaw was, in a word, weird. It didn't taste *bad* but it just wasn't something I'd ever order again.

Good NC style BBQ. I have been here a few times since moving to the area. Definitely encapsulates the regular NC BBQ joint.

Towel City Tavern has two floors and is connected to the baseball stadium. Only the first floor was open during my visit. The Cabarrus Brewing Co. serving tanks are what you see as you enter. If you order a beer, it will be fresh as it comes directly from the tanks, as it is brewed on site. The restaurant's name pays homage to the city's textile roots and the towels made at the mills. The restaurant design also incorporated the town's history with Cannon Mills. The restaurant has an industrial feel with the open kitchen, high ceilings, concrete floors, exposed brickwork and steel structures. The tables were crafted from a 160-year-old tree that fell on the mill property. There were garage doors that likely opened during the games. They offer a $10 lunch special that includes a drink, side and entree. The $10 menu had a lot to select from: sandwiches, wraps, salads, wings, and a burger. I went with the All-American burger and fries. My burger was a good size, cooked to order and tasted great. The fries were really good, too. Service was great and attentive too. I was even offered a tea to go. My waiter got me in and out of the restaurant fast so I could get to the Music Hall of Fame on time. I did stop at the mural again on my way back to the car. Parking was free in the street spots and no time limits. Although I am not sure about the rules on game days/nights. With my favorite mural on the building, I have a feeling I will be back again to try more menu items and maybe see a ballgame too.

If you're a Midwesterner living down South (or just someone who knows the magic of a true tavern…read moreexperience), The Stag & Doe will feel like a warm hug and a high-five the moment you walk in. It's the closest thing I've found to a Southern Indiana tavern--and trust me, that's the highest of compliments. The wood-paneled walls, vintage beer signs, red and white checkered tablecloths, baskets of crackers waiting at your table, and ice-cold beer mugs are pure nostalgia. They even have the old-school tavern pizza that tastes just like home. I didn't know whether to cry tears of joy or order another round (spoiler: I did both). The prices are so good it almost feels illegal. A frosty mug is $4, but you're better off grabbing the small pitcher for $8 (about 3.5 glasses) -- or go big with the larger pitcher for $16 if you're feeling generous. And yes, you can even get Blue Moon at that price! #worthit. They're famous for their spaghetti, but my boyfriend can never resist the ribs--and every time the waitress offers to "add shrimp," he says yes without hesitation (it's basically tradition now). It's about a 35-minute drive from Charlotte (add time for the inevitable traffic), but it's absolutely worth it. The only thing missing is a giant fishbowl beer glass and some cheeseballs... then this place would be a 20/10, no contest. The food? Fantastic. The prices? Even better. But the feeling of being "at home" when you're 600 miles away? Absolutely priceless. Stag & Doe is a hidden gem, a tavern treasure, and officially the apple of my eye. I'll be back again and again--save me a pitcher.

DO NOT CONFUSE THIS PLACE WITH WHATABURGER... THEY ARE NOT THE SAME!!!…read more We saw a review of this place on YouTube and decided to try it out because it's "sorta" on our way through NC. "Sorta..." means the exit is off 85 but the restaurant is 8.5 miles off the exit. That said, we would do it again. And that should tell you mostly what you need to know because it's not super convenient to get to, but it is worth it. It also says a lot that this place was PACKED! Founded in 1955 in Kannapolis, NC, I see some similarities to what the big chain Whataburger USED to be. Which got me thinking that someone copy-catted someone. I had to know so I looked it up and saw Whataburger was founded in 1950, five years before this business.... I can only assume the founders of this restaurant visited Texas, tried that famous burger restaurant and brought the idea back to NC with them. And I'm not mad about that because, where the "famous" Whataburger has dropped the ball and failed, What-A-Burger has continued to succeed when it comes to quality. As a matter of fact, if I closed my eyes and took a bite of the What-A-Cheeseburger.... It instantly reminds me of my childhood days in Texas. The bread was fresh, the lettuce crispy, the tomato juicy, the cheese not old or congealed and the patty was fresh, juicy and had that amazing true grilled taste. We also tried the hotdog. Coming standard with chili, slaw, onions, we added mustard. And while I loved the What-A-Cheeseburger a lot, I was surprised to find (because I don't generally care for hotdogs) that the hotdog was my favorite item. The chili had a great flavor. The slaw was creamy and crisp, the onions were also crisp, and again the bun was very fresh. The hotdog itself had good flavor and snap to it. We did have a few minor negatives. The fries had no seasoning on them and the onion rings were just okay. Not bad by any means but not stellar. Neither of these are a dealbreaker for us, though. I saw after ordering that they have curly fries so maybe next time we'll give those a try. The drink selection is definitely quirky but I like quirky. While they serve some Pepsi products, they do not sell Mountain Dew. Their Pepsi lineup is limited to Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, and Starry. They also offer Patio Red Cherry (I don't know what that is) SunDrop, and Cheerwine; along with what they call, "The Witch Doctor." I got that and while I'm not sure what's all in it, I loved it! Definitely different and I'd get it again. Sweet and unsweetened tea are also offered. The staff were friendly and helpful and while waiting for our food, I struck up a conversation with an elderly man who said he's been coming here for as long as they've been here. Building is a bit dated, but I like that about it. It adds to the experience. They are both a drive in and a dine in place with the old carhop order stations, which again, I thought was pretty awesome. Overall, our experience here was great. This place has almost no social media presence, which while it makes finding an updated menu a challenge, I'd rather them keep putting the focus on their great food, rather than pandering to the masses. 8/10... would absolutely come back.
