First time visitor and I was impressed with the BBQ, the memorabilia, the outstanding service, and the prices. This is a gem and I look forward to returning soon. We had both the chopped and sliced BBQ along with the white slaw and potato salad. The slaw and potato salad were okay, although I prefer the yellow potato salad. The memorabilia throughout the building was really neat to look at. The service was friendly and efficient. The prices for the food was very reasonable. Came to Gary's Bar-B-Q after doing some pottery painting nearby. It was such a bizarre experience. The place definitely feels like your usual kitschy southern barbecue spot. The menu however is really hard to understand. They have trays but don't explain what comes with the tray or what the difference is between a large and small tray. I've also never been to a barbecue place that only serves chicken or ribs on certain days. We asked the waitress about the mac and cheese, and she said it's just Kraft mac and cheese. A barbecue place that isn't even making their own homemade mac and cheese is insane. We ended up ordering fried pickles, a half dozen hushpuppies, a bacon cheeseburger, and 3 Bar-B-Q sandwiches. Sadly enough, the hush puppies were the best part of this entire meal. The fried pickles were fine, nothing to write home about. The bacon cheeseburger wasn't that edible, definitely tasted frozen. The Bar-B-Q sandwiches were also just fine. Satisfied our hunger but wouldn't necessarily eat them again. The even more bizarre part was that we were given no plates, no silverware, and as we were eating, we're watching the staff fill condiment bottles, leaving the old ketchup at the bottom and filling it with new ketchup. Lastly, they only accept cash and checks. This entire meal including drinks was only about $35, which seems like a steal, but the carch is that the food isn't that great. Well, alarmed when I saw their they seemed up serve Kraft Mac and cheese, which of course my parents and I ordered with our BBQ tray just to verify, and yes, they do Not gonna lie, I love Kraft, so I didn't mind, BUT whatttt an abomination for a down home, BBQ place not to make their own Mac! I am a regular customer at Gary's even though it's a ways from my house. The level of food quality and service have remained consistently high throughout the years. The place is clean. They have a sanitation grade of 96.5. The dining area is clean. They support their servers with a bussing staff that keeps the dining area clean. Many of the servers have worked there for years. It's good see familiar face. Low turnover speaks well of the business. The food is good. I always order a sliced barbecue sandwich with red slaw. Tonight I paired it with a baked potato. My dinner partner ordered a chopped barbecue and an order of homemade onion rings. Everything was delicious. The prices are more than fair. We both for less than $20. read more

This is a delightful place filled with great people and nostalgia (especially if you're into vintage VW buses). Service was courteous and prompt, as one would expect in an established eatery located in the middle of NC. The portions and prices were great, but I thought the food was just good. I opted for the combo plate to get a good sampling. The pulled pork was tasty, but IMO, the chicken breast took center stage--perfectly cooked and not a hint of dryness inside. The fries are thick cut and crinkly, crispy on the outside. A few shreds of lettuce and a slice of tomato topped with a dollop of mayo provided a side salad. Based on the reviews I had seen, I was really looking forward to the hush puppies, but they were certainly not the best I've ever had. The extra-finely-grated slaw was, in a word, weird. Wow! What a great place for Barbecue! We had the Chicken, pulled pork (is called sliced FYI)! Fries and Hush Puppies are to die for! Fried pickles are a must as well.
