Dr. Niu is the best and has treated our family since 1996. We still go to him today. He took care of my father's teeth, did my braces, and now is my sister's orthodontist. I remember when he pulled one of my teeth out in our early sessions and said: "I'm not going to lie. This will hurt a little bit." I was in 6th grade at that time. Before seeing Dr. Niu, my prior orthodontists had often lied about pain level and claimed nothing would hurt. Dr.Niu is honest and direct with patients. You can tell he does this line of work because he genuinely loves it. He won't try to overcharge you for unnecessary services. Instead, he'll tell you exactly what you need and work on your teeth diligently. Thanks to his careful planning and excellent treatment, I won't need to pull my wisdom teeth out. After months of frustration dealing with this dental office, I feel other parents should be aware of my experience. My dental insurance has a $2,000 yearly maximum, so I am very careful about treatment costs and insurance usage. When I scheduled my son's appointment on March 5, I clearly stated that I did NOT want a cleaning. Despite that, the office still performed one. Since everything had already been started, I did not stop them. I was also told to wait for insurance pre-approval before proceeding with treatment. Later, I was shocked to see my insurance paid $620 for a check-up, child cleaning, fluoride, and 5 X-rays. The claim was processed on March 10. I followed up several times on 3/13, 3/16, and 3/18 requesting the treatment plan and pre-estimate because I had already confirmed with my insurance that the claim had processed. I finally received a response on 3/27. The office manager, Jenny, presented two treatment options with large upfront deposits because pre estimated come back $0. However, I only wanted my son's two front baby teeth extracted. Jenny told me I needed to pay a $300 deposit for extracting teeth O and P. I specifically asked twice whether the deposit would be refunded if insurance paid more than expected, and she confirmed it would. At no point was a deductible mentioned. I scheduled the extraction for April 2 and paid the $300 deposit. Insurance later paid the office $412.80 for that visit. On April 20, I called to follow up and informed them the insurance claim had already been paid and that I had resolved the previous pre-estimate issue. The front desk told me the $300 would be refunded once they received the insurance payment and that they would resubmit the pre-estimate. I called again on May 7 and was told the pre-estimate had finally been approved and Jenny would call me back the next day. After waiting two more weekends without a response, I called again on May 18. During that call, Jenny first said they would refund the $300 deposit but keep $100 for a deductible that had never previously been explained. She then discussed another treatment plan involving teeth L, S, K, and T and demanded a $1,430 deposit upfront without clearly explaining: * how much insurance would cover * which charges applied to which teeth I specifically asked about tooth #S because the dentist had previously recommended extraction due to my child's discomfort. Jenny shifted the discussion toward fillings and said the treatment depended on the dentist's preference to complete multiple teeth in one visit so my child would not need anesthesia twice. However, the explanation was confusing because the teeth L and S she mentioned were on opposite sides of the mouth. I then asked a simple question: if tooth #S was extracted and there was bleeding, could the dentist still perform a filling on adjacent tooth #T? She could not answer. Instead, she said extracting tooth #S would require a $150 deposit. I asked: "If insurance pays more than $150, will I get refunded?" Her response was: "It depends on how insurance pays." I then asked: "How much does insurance need to pay for me to receive a refund?" Again, she could not answer. What concerned me most was that she said she had worked there for 39 years, yet still could not explain the cost of a simple extraction or how refunds were determined. At that point, she said they would only refund $200 from my original $300 deposit because they were keeping $100 for the deductible, then told me to "go to another dentist because they couldn't answer my questions" before hanging up on me. I later went to the office to pick up my $200 refund check and copies of the X-rays. I attempted to speak directly with the doctor to clarify the treatment plan and costs, but another dentist, possibly the owner, instructed the office manager to simply hand me a treatment plan dated March 5. After months of follow-up calls, insurance delays, confusion regarding deposits and refunds, and constantly changing explanations, I was ultimately handed the same treatment plan created on the first visit -- without any updated cost breakdown or finalized insurance estimate. Insurance covered $1,032.38 and I paid $100 out of pocket, making the total $1,132.38 for a child's cleaning, check-up, fluoride, 5 X-rays, and extraction of two baby teeth. Others can decide for themselves whether that seems reasonable. As a parent, I understand dental work can be expensive and insurance can be complicated. However, patients deserve clear communication, transparency about costs, honest explanations regarding deposits and insurance payments, and respectful treatment when asking reasonable questions. I had a really bad underbite and tooth gap and Dr Niu took care of my braces and retainer so that I have straight teeth now. As a kid, I was scared of many of the doctors I had to go to but I never felt scared to go to Dr Niu's office as he is very patient and kind. He can be a little stern but that's only because he wants you to take care of your teeth. He is always reminding me to floss and brush so I don't get cavities and won't have to pay and get them filled, which I appreciate. All the office staff and dental assistants are very kind as well! First off I want to say that I've been coming here since I was 5 years old. I've been coming here for almost 20 years and have never had a problem! Dr. Niu is one of the most CARING orthodontist I have ever had. He puts the patient needs way before his own. There were countless times that he has taken care of my teeth without charging me the extra fees that other dentists charge. I recently moved and went to a different dentist but came back to here because he is just that good! The other place told me I had 7 cavities, but when I went to Dr. Niu, he said my teeth were in perfect condition. He isn't money hungry like other dentists. A letter from the father of a three-year-old child Salomon; Solomon is a healthy and lovely boy born in December 2016. The doctor told me at birth that he was a very healthy baby. I think we will raise this child very smoothly. But based on my inexperience and the mentality of loving him very much, I allowed he kept holding the bottle to sleep at night, and when he woke up in the middle of the night, he still sucked the bottle until he was three and a half years old. When Solomon teeth erupted, the teeth broke frequently, but I didn't take it seriously, I thought that the child would still grow teeth anyway. Only now I know that this is a very wrong idea. At the beginning of 2020, I took Solomon to Taiwan for a trip, but he kept crying when he got on the plane and we were almost kicked off from the plane by the airline. I took Solomon to a dentist in Taiwan.  But Solomon was very uncooperative and vigorously resisted the treatment. After returning to the U.S., I took him to a pediatrician. The doctor suggested that he must have dental treatment immediately, so he referred Solomon to Dr. Niu, a pediatric dentist. When we took Solomon to Dr. Niu's clinic, I saw many children of the same age as Solomon in the clinic. I knew that I had come to the right place. However, I was still influenced by the concept of sleep therapy as it was recommended in Taiwan.   When I communicated with Dr. Niu, Dr. Niu patiently explained and informed the risks of sleep therapy. So I decided to only use the wrap up method to treat Solomon's teeth. Because the decay of Solomon's teeth is very serious, theoretically many of his teeth need to be pulled out.  But Doctor Niu does not aim at making more money and only perform easy treatment. Dr. Niu had tried to preserve Solomon's teeth as many as possible. His intention touched my heart very much. During the first treatment, although Solomon resisted vigorously, Dr. Niu patiently completed the first treatment. Because Solomon's teeth decayed so extensive, he needed several appointments to complete the treatment.  Therefore we made an appointment for the next treatment. I thought I could rest myself and no longer worry about Solomon's teeth. However, there are unforeseen circumstances that the new corona pneumonia (COVID 19) had severely hit the world. Everyone must stay at home and almost all businesses must be shut down. But Doctor Niu still concerned and paid attention to Solomon's teeth. During that period, Solomon's untreated teeth became inflamed again and he kept crying. I had to ask Doctor Niu for help. Dr. Niu quickly returned our call and called the pharmacy to prescribe antibiotic medication. Although there was improvement after Salomon took anti-inflammatory drugs, the swelling still could not be completely subsided. I had to ask Doctor Niu for help again. We went to the Niu last Monday to fill up my kid's cavities teeth. We felt super duple disappointed. Highly not recommend this businessman My kid went to this clinic for 2 years. They ask my 6 years old kid to fill cavities half a year ago. Because of COVID we finally decide to do it ASAP on Oct. They refuse my request, ask to visit the office do the check and x-ray again, and I have to pay a $100 deposit first, then they will arrange the operation. That's the money for appointment only, not pay for the treatment. They said if your kids need restraints, we will not return $100, this deposit will pay for the wrap Finally, we got an appointment last Monday. We arrived at the office in the morning, and wait for about 10 mins. There are 2 problems I want to say. First, Dr. Niu didn't find my caries. He was nice to me and my younger sister, but he didn't look carefully or there was something wrong with his eyes. I've been with Dr. Niu since I was in elementary school. He is a great orthodontist and very talented! I've gone through braces and wisdom teeth pulling with him. I only had my braces for 2 years, even though I suffered from a severe overbite. Even the wisdom teeth procedure was not a problem at all. He pulled 2 at a time (2 separate visits) and he promised that there would be minimal swelling afterwards and he was right! I did not end up with chipmunk cheeks like my other classmates in high school had. I am now in my mid-twenties and I still go to him. He is still the consistent and honest orthodontist I know. I've been seeing Dr. Niu since I was 12. Although I no longer live in the area, I fly back to LA especially see him. Dr. Niu is seriously one of the best dentists in the SGV for the following reasons: 1. He's VERY honest. There are many dentists who encourage you to pull more teeth or fill more cavities than necessary for the sake of making money. Dr. Niu will only recommend a procedure if it's truly necessary and he won't "over-diagnose" you with ailments that you don't actually have. 2. He takes your face shape and overall facial harmony into account when giving you braces. I'm not sure how to explain this, but many people end up having the same "look" in their mouth area post-braces, event though it might not mesh well with the rest of their face. You won't run into this issue with Dr. Niu. 3. Last but not least, Dr. Niu genuinely cares about his patients and seeks to build long-term relationships with them. read more

Dr Niu is a great dentist! Very patient and cares about building a relationship with his patients. My daughter, Who is 3 years old, is terrified of going to the dentist! She has a lot of work done in the past two years, but today she came in for two cavities. We have been trying to communicate to her the importance of going in regularly and maintaining healthy teeth. The office promotes a natural approach to their treatments. We initially planned for the papoose board to strap her down but he felt that she was ready to just be seated normally. This was her first time sitting down by herself like a big girl and handled her treatments for her cavity! Dr Niu ensured he walked through each step with her. Dr. Niu is a great dentist and orthodontist. I had my braces done here and he is honest and knowledgeable as to what needs to be done and ultimately, what he can and cannot do. Not only is he honest, he also makes going to the dentist quite pleasant. As a kid, I hated going to the dentist, hence, I have to wear braces now in my early adult years, but Dr. Niu is gentle and the extractions (I had 4 extractions before my braces) is painless. On the non-professional side, he is a great person to talk to. His staff is unconditionally friendly especially Lisa (Dental Assistant) that would treat you like part of the family. They have good appointment hours and does a great job on appt reminders which especially comes in handy with me since I have a hectic schedule and usually forgets appts. In my review I will share my braces experience and my wisdom tooth removing experience. **Braces** My two older sisters and I all went to Dr. Niu for braces. Yet out of us three my teeth were probably the most messed up to begin with. It's been awhile since I had braces so sorry I don't have any before photos to show, and if I owned any, I would probably burn them before anyone sees them. Okay okay, maybe my teeth weren't THAT bad but I had pretty bad buckteeth when I was a kid. I remember in elementary school kids would use to pick on me because of my teeth and I was very self-conscious about them. Then I turned to Dr. Niu for braces. He pulled out 2 teeth and pulled back my upper teeth. I had braces for about two years. I am still amaze how the braces helped so much. This is going to sound crazy but braces actually slightly reconstructed my face shape. Before braces my face was more round afterwards my face became more egg shape. Dr. Niu is a miracle worker! Even now when people compliment on my smile, I am still a bit surprised; what once was biggest insecurity as a kid is now one of my best physical qualities. ~Note: Don't think once you have braces everything is all good, you still need to wear your retainers! If you don't wear your retainers, your teeth might go back and you'll need to get braces again (that happen to my sister). I've been 5 years braces free but I still wear my retainers every night when I sleep (or at least every other night). I go to Dr. Niu once a year or so to make sure my retainer isn't loose. **Wisdom tooth** I got 1 wisdom tooth pulled out from Dr. Niu. Before going in I was pretty nervous because I always hear stories on how painful the procedure is and I have seen my friends with chickmunk cheeks after getting their wisdom tooth removed. Well my experience was pretty pain free and NO ONE could tell I got my wisdom tooth pulled out the next day. Actually no one would even believe me when I told them because there wasn't any visible swelling. How is this possible???? Dr. Niu explains to me how when it comes to wisdom teeth, most dentists cuts the patients gums so they can dissects the teeth into pieces and then pull out the teeth bits. Yet Dr. Niu doesn't cut the gums but pulls the teeth as a whole. By not cutting the gums it prevents the swelling and reduce the pain. The only discomfort I remember is the slight pulling pressure when removing the teeth. It was also a bit annoying how afterwards I had to constantly suck on cotton balls drenched in my blood (sorry for the graphic detail) but hey, matter how you pull your wisdom tooth, there's going to a lot of blood involved. I'm not going to lie, Dr. Niu's services are a bit pricy but it's worth it. My advice is to go to Dr. Niu for the big stuff. I honestly don't know what I will do if I didn't have Dr. Niu. My mom even says how braces is probably one of the best investment she ever made on me(yeah I know, it's a bit sad...) but it's true. read more

I have been coming to Dr. Niu ever since I was a little girl. He has been one of the best orthodontist I have ever had by far! If he was not good I probably wouldn't keep coming back to him after all these years. I remember when my mom bought me here when I was 11 for the first time to get braces done. He had me get x-rays done and had my teeth examined then had us follow up with him a week later so he can find the best solution for aligning up my teeth. I have a special case where two of my teeth are missing. He gave me two options to choose from and recommended me what he thought would be the best solution. I did appreciate the fact that he took the time to explaining to us what his plans would be before going forward with the braces. Fast-forward a couple years. Now it was time for me to get my wisdom teeth pulled out and I have to say Dr Niu is definitely is one of the most honest and patient doctor's I have ever worked with. He has already removed three since they grew out. I have one last stubborn wisdom tooth that hasn't grown out yet and he honestly told me to come back when it does. If it doesn't come out then there is no need to force it out. He sure did save me from a lot of pain. If there are any parents out there looking for a new orthodontist, definitely bring them here cause he will be sure to take great care of your kids. I believe like so many of Dr. Niu's patients, we've known him since we were little kids, for me personally, since I was 6 years old. I'm 26 years old now, and I still go to Dr. Niu for all my teeth needs. He simply is the best and extraordinary. He will always take the smartest and painless route to help you. For example, when I was getting braces as a teenager, Dr. Niu noticed the issue w/ my teeth was my crooked chin, which was causing my overbite. So unlike my sister, I didn't need to take out any teeth and I wouldn't need to wear head gear. Which was super doable for my high school self. Dr. Niu told me from the start, he would do his best to fix my teeth, but that he wouldn't be able to fix my overbite 100%. Honestly I get compliments on my smile all the time even though I still have an ever so slight and tiny overbite. Another example is, around the time when I was a sophomore in college, after my braces were off, I needed to take my bottom wisdom teeth out. Dr. Niu advised me to only take my bottom wisdom teeth out first and wait for my top ones to grow out, as the top would be easier to remove once they were grown out versus the bottom. So when he took out my bottom ones, he numbed me up real good, and then strategically & masterfully cut into to my gums to removed the teeth, leaving ABSOLUTELY NO SWELLING OR BRUISING! It was freaking amazing, the cleanest cut & cleanest extraction. Pure AWESOMENESS & MAD SKILLS!! My top wisdom teeth finally grew out now as an adult and so I went back to Dr. Niu and it was the most quick & painless procedure EVERRRR!! Basically went in, signed paper work, saw Dr. Niu, numbed me real fast (smallest needle, didn't hurt at all, even warned me when he needed to inject more & thought it might hurt me, but completely didn't), once the numbness took affect, he basically pulled out both teeth REAL QUICK. Altogether, I want to say it took a whole of 10 minutes, if not less. I was shocked at not only how fast everything was, but how painless it was, b/c liked everyone else in the world, going to the dentist office's is scary! I will continue to see Dr. Niu until I can't anymore and also will take my children to see him too! I rarely write reviews, but my experience might save you time and money. I would give this guy negative star if yelp allows it, he is the worst dentist I have ever experienced. He would not exercise due diligent. Went there to fix a cavity for my kid, this dentist end up drilled too much and broke his teeth. He is not careful with his tools. When we pointed it out, he would find some excuses to avoid liabilities. He would treat the broken teeth but we have to pay couple hundreds extra because it is not cover by insurance. Dr. Niu has been treating my sister and me since we were very young children. Prior to being introduced to Dr. Niu, I was with an extremely poor orthodontistry practice who was purposefully dragging out my braces procedure due to being just unprofessional and financially manipulative. When my friend's mother told my mom about Dr. Niu, my mom did not hesitate to contact them for more information to transfer me over. After starting my visits with Dr. Niu, I immediately noticed the enormous difference in the terrible/improper treatments that I used to have and the wonderful/wholesome treatments that I was now receiving. I finally finished my braces procedure in an extremely timely/punctual fashion and had a beautiful, perfect smile that I had been waiting for for literally two entire years. He was always honest, professional, and comforting to the wide range of patients, some five years old and some in the late teen years. His experience, knowledge, and wisdom never wavers. Dr. Niu is a very great dentist and orthodontist. My brother and I have been coming here ever since we were little. He helped me with my two front teeth and perfected my smile with braces. He even helped me with my brother with his wisdom teeth removal and my brother never swelled up after the procedure. He's a very patient doctor and knows how to treat his patients. Dr. Niu has been my dentist for many years. In fact, when I was little, I used to come here because of the many cavities I had from eating sweets. I also came here to get braces. Dr. Niu is an exception dentist and orthodontist. He takes great care of his patients, of which mostly consist of children. However, there are also adults, who like me, have stayed because we like this place. His staff is professional and friendly. 8 molar teeth filled for 5 year old, NO Sedation!! The reason I chose Dr. Niu was simple: he did not practice general anesthesia or any other sedation. Every other dentists I visited ( I consulted 5 dentists before Dr. Niu) wanted to put my daughter to sleep before they can do the job. According to them, my daughter's cavities were so bad (yes, some of the cavities indeed were just huge), and there was no way to fix them when she was conscious. However, I happened to heard some bad stories on sedation from my friends, and was unease. These guys all appeared so nice, assuring me sedation was safe blah blah. BUT they still need me to sign the waiver. And I just can't. It is not 100% safe at all! Yes the risk is low, but to me, filling teeth simply cannot justify the risk, especially when you have a choice. My daughter was crying all night, I know I had to find someone. I spent a lot time to read through the reviews in Yelp and finally found Dr.Niu. I drove a long way to him. And the experience turned out to be just wonderful! Dr. Niu had very strong will power and spoke with authority, which influenced my daughter, and earned her trust at very first visit. After that, everything worked out like magic. She used to reject any tool getting into her mouth, but just magically became cooperative. We had in total 4 visits, and she had all her 8 molar teeth filled. The other small teeth were bad too, but Dr.Niu suggested we don't fix them since the new one will come out soon. She is so happy now since she can have candy again.
