An amazing first experience being needled. The process is smooth and painless as they calming explain what process is taking place. Starting with a short talk with the acupuncturist, you move slowly onto a table with relaxing heating pads to loosen your muscles. A short while later the pads are removed and the needles begin to be inserted. You find yourself drifting in and out of dream land as the needles release the serotonin in your body while calming music plays in the background. If necessary, a tens unit is attached to several of the needles bringing an even more calming sensation with its rhythmic pulse. After about fifteen minutes the door opens, the needles removed as painless as they went in. As if you weren't mellowed out enough, here comes the massage to bring you deep into slumberville. No rush here. Everything is methodic and real. When your session is over you find yourself slowly walking to the front to setup your next session of relaxation and comfort. Careful though - for me, I felt so relaxed for the next four or so hours that it was almost as though I was drunk. Drunk with calmness. No complaints here. I've been going to Dr. DeForest for 34 years. Initially, he got me through an extremely painful disc injury through a series of adjustments. Afterwards, he's kept me relatively pain-free as I've gone through degenerative disc disease, spinal osteophyte formation and arthrosis as I aged. I've gone through perhaps 15 M.D.'s over the years, along with pain meds, acupuncture, and massage, hoping to get relief from the problems above, but none of them have been as effective as Dr. DeForest and his adjustments. I've come to rely on him greatly to give me relief. They key has been having "tune-up" adjustments on a regular basis, rather than seeing him only when I'm in severe pain. It's the right way to use chiropractic treatment for me, and the tuneups are effective, which is why I've been seeing him for so long. Other positives are that he has extremely flexible scheduling, and although he doesn't take my medical insurance, his rates are so low that they are about the cost of what I would have for a copay anyway. I was recommended to Dr. Deforest from one of his daughters friends. When I called he just said hello and didn't identify the name of office or even a dr. The call just went downhill from there. I am usually very frighted by any type of doctor (yes, even the optometrist!) but Dr. D is really nice and very quick! I am covered by insurance, but my dad is not. Gary Deforest seems like a nice enough guy, but I would not recommend his chiropractor practice. I gave it an honest shot and went several times over a little over 2 months. Here are the top 5 reasons I would not recommend him as a chiropractor: 1) HIPPA non-compliance. He always asks about my symptoms in the waiting room or in the "PT" room in front of others. If he asks how I'm doing and I just say the generic "good", he will clarify that he means my symptoms, but he doesn't seem to understand that some people want to follow HIPPA guidelines. Also, all his files are visible to everyone. You can see all the other patient names and none are locked. 2) Billing. He says that insurance will not pay him much (2-3 dollars per session) but then I get the bill from insurance and find out they have been paying him around 100$ per session. One top of that I was not supposed to have a co-pay, but I had been paying one all along. 3) He is constantly selling himself. If he really was a great chiropractor, he wouldn't have to constantly say how much better he is than other chiropractors. 4) He will continue to provide services without significant results. When I wasn't making much progress, he just recommended doing services 2-3 times per week for a couple weeks. When I pointed out we had already tried that, he didn't give a referral for anything else even though he had bragged at the start of services that he wasn't a chiropractor that would keep treating without results. 5)Hygiene. I could go on about this, but I will just say it is not a very hygienic clinic. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Deforest, as needed, for the last 3 years. I originally went to him with a back strain. He did a great job treating that injury and was very thorough in his evaluation prior to treatment. He also has in office x-ray equipment. I continue to go for tune-ups every month or so. I've always enjoyed Dr. D's personality, which I've never found to be "shady" or "creepy" as Christian B stated. Christian B. should have probably got clearance from the other motorist's insurance before seeing any chiropractor's help. I have insurance that only requires me to pay a $10 co-pay, so that is not an issue for me. Dr. D has never tried to over schedule me. He treated me more regularily at the beginning of treatment and then less frequently as my condition improved. I've been to several other chiropractors in the past and have found Dr. D to be the most effective. If you're in the Old Town area give him a try. read more

I have been seeing him for about 3 years now and he is a great chiropractor. He also uses a roller table and back massager whenever needed- the roller table is my favorite! Dr. De Forest has been my only chiropractor - I wasn't a believer until I went to see him over 8 years ago with a problem neck - I could barely turn my head! He fixed me up in just a few visits! He does try to convince me to come in for periodic tune-ups, and I stubbornly only show up at his door every couple of years when I've done something to myself again and can barely function! I would recommend Dr. Deforest to anyone that has back pain, throbbing and/or numbness. My story is a 5 year story living with back pain. I jumped through all the hoops with primary doctors, waiting on referrals, waiting on insurance pre-approvals, months of physical therapy, MRI's, spinal infections (twice). Nothing of which worked.. I have had lower back problems for years to a point where I couldn't even get dressed for work in the morning, walk down the stairs, or get into my car. Just the basic things made my back feel MISERABLE. It was really severe pain where I just resigned myself to thinking one day, like my parents I would have to have surgery. I should know - it took me a while to find a good chiropractor to fix a horrendous back pain i had a few years ago. I went to at least 5 other chiropractors, none of which had the strength and experience needed to adjust my back. For men, I think this can be a significant issue with chiroparactors - they have to be STRONG enough to adjust your back, but also have the quickness and experience to do it safely and with confidence. I fell off the hardword stairs and hurt my spine (L1 and L5) over a year ago. I was seeing physical therapist 3 times / week for several months , but my back got worse despite I was doing all the exercise that the therapist ask. I had hard time driving, sitting, walking. Finally, my co-worker refer me to the Dr. De Forest. Unlike other chiropractors, he didn't force me to re-take x-rays, purchase an expensive package or force me to do anything I didn't want to.
