    Confit duck salad

This is a regular spot for work lunches and functions for my company so I've been a few times, usually during the lunch hour. There's a varied menu of tasty pizzas and burgers and the salads are great too. On this occasion most of our table went with burgers and loved every bite, especially the curly fries, while I tried to be healthy and order a salad and then just gusted all the arancini chips that were just crispy on the outside and warm and creamy centred. There's a function room upstairs and I believe you can rent it free of charge as long as you arrange a bar tab which is perfect for small group workshops. There's heaps of parking, usually sport on the TVs and it's close to the mall and public transport so it's pretty handy for anyone in the south-eastern part of the city. A good reliable spot for a bite or drinks with the work crowd.

This pub is massive, and it needs to be because it can get pretty busy at times; especially during lunchtime or just after work hours. It seems as if those suits really like to take their clients here. It's the perfect place for a feed and a beer or two if you're shopping at Sylvia Park and can be a good meeting place. I've had some of the pizzas here, the platter and a quesadilla. Pizzas and the platter were very nice, the quesadilla was average (probably wouldn't get it again). Indoors, the place is very spacious and there is a large outdoor seating area too which I love. The prices here are not exactly cheap, but certainly worth it. Friendly staff too, which always makes the experience just that little bit better.

I've been to Garrisons so many times that I've lost count. Its a great spot for an after work drink, a birthday dinner or met up point on the way into town on the weekends. Its part gastropub/part sports bar, with a pretty wide variety menu, full bar and projector screen and a few TVs scattered throughout the place. They've got a great loyalty program which I'd say contributes well to their repeat customers. Its location in Sylvia Park is handy from any which way you're coming from in South/East Auckland and there's ample parking. But it can get crowded- there's lot of space for drinkers but you'll find diners are squeezed into a section of the bar that fills up very quickly, whether you've made a reservation or not. I've gotten used to the food here, I know what's good and I rarely have to look a the menu to know what I'll order. They're pretty consistent with their meals so I always leave knowing I've spent my money well. Try their pizzas if you haven't, there's a great selection with different sizes to choose from, so you're bound to find a couple of flavours to dig into! The service here is always great, it just may take a while for your food and drinks to come to you. My advice; order your food from your waitress but go and buy your drinks up at the bar- much more efficient and you get your drink right after you order.

    BBQ chicken wings and chips

I'm afraid I don't have anything really good to say about this bar. We hadn't been for ages due to thinking the food was not great. Then you know how it is, it's Sat in Sylvia Park and you need a break from shopping (especially if you are like me, and would prefer to do ANYTHING else but shop). We decided to give it another go. Bad idea. First we couldn't get anyone to serve us, so ended up ordering food at the bar. We just got BBQ chicken wings and chips. The chicken was very average - between the two of us we didn't even finish the 6 we ordered. Thank goodness we went for the half dozen. They just tasted like poached chicken dumped in a load of smokey bbq sauce. It definitely wasn't marinated in it, because there was no taste off the meat. Hard to get chips wrong so I can't complain about those There seems to be a lot of staff just standing around doing nothing, and I would never accuse them of being OVER friendly! This is good if you want a drink to break the boredom of shopping but I would rate the food court above the food served here.

I came here for a birthday dinner on saturday with a group of friends. I have never been a fan of garrisons, never enjoying their menu overly particularly in relation to the price one pays, and as for their wine list, it is not one that i myself enjoy. However we had tasty cocktails- see the picture, for only $12.50 on saturday which was fun. I ordered the open steak sandwich which came with fries. the fries were nice, the steak wasnt bad, but being someone who eats it blue/rare i did struggle to chew the well cooked meat- though i did not specify that to the waitress when ordering. everyone else had good meals though, at a good price, so i may rethink my previous attitude towards the place.

For a pub at the mall, Garrisons is pretty good. It's large and has a great outdoor area that fills up quickly on a sunny afternoon. They have a good range of drinks on tap at reasonable prices. Their menu is big and has a little bit of everything. The meal sizes are also large (so think about sharing) but the quality is only OK. I've never had much luck with the calamari there, but the pizzas are good, especially if you are drinking with a large group. It has a pretty good atmosphere, especially on the weekends or if it's game night. And the best bit? Unless you're there the week leading up to Christmas, you don't have to worry about trying to find a car park.

I've always enjoyed the service at Cock & Bull. Always welcoming, quick and cheerful, and you know your drink is in good hands. Their food is very well done- I tend to lean towards their salads, but they do great wedges, nachos and fries with aioli. Their aptly named Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa pizzas are well priced and taste even better! Cock & Bull is a long-standing establishment in Botany Downs and really fits the gastropub mould. If you're looking for somewhere that does its job right in the Botany area, go no further than the Cock & Bull.

It's a fairly new establishment in the area, but it's become a regular hangout for a few beers and very good food. You definitely feel the '80's vibe when you're there, and its always nice to see a little appreciation for that era. Their pizzas are delicious, particularly 'Rangi's Hangi' and 'Larry the Lamb'. They do a very nice caesar salad and my favourite main has to be the crispy chicken burger with aioli and melted brie- one of the best restaurant burgers I've had. They've got a good range of ciders and do a few cocktails to quench your thirst. They also serve most of their drinks in 600mL milk bottles, which is a really cool touch. I'd have to say that Nineteen Eighty One is best known for their fortnightly Wednesday quiz nights. The place gets packed and its always a good laugh- there's even a prize for the team that comes second to last.

The lighting is really nice. The service was okay, not great but not bad either. It was rather unremarkable. When we first arrived, there were a ton of guys there watching the UFC fight - if you're into UFC, this appears to be the place to go. We started with drinks, I ordered a prosecco and the bf got a beer. The beers didn't have prices on them, but we were still surprised when we got the bill and the beer was $15 - almost as much as my dinner. I'm not sure if that's normal or if I'm still getting adjusted to New Zealand prices, but when my boyfriend asked the kiwis at work, they said it's definitely not normal. I ordered the vegan buddha bowl (was really excited to see a vegan option on the menu at a pub that isn't chips) and my boyfriend ordered the fish and chips he was so excited about. The food came out pretty quickly. Mine was fresh but lacked flavor - it became obvious really quickly that the chef who invented this dish is not vegan nor do they know any vegans. Vegan food is more than just vegetables without dressing ;) Nonetheless, I did enjoy the mashed sweet potato in the middle and I was very happy to be able to eat something healthy at a pub! My boyfriend was very happy with his fish and chips and it came out looking perfect. All in all, the Flying Moa is a standard pub. I do hear that they have a good trivia night which I would be interested to try out, and their drinks list looks enticing - I wouldn't mind trying some of those jam jars and cocktails.
