I had Garrison Plumbing replace a shower downspout and replace the fill valve in a toilet. While these are both simple tasks, I'd had a couple of people (including another plumber) struggle to remove the downspout due to corrosion, so I wanted to make sure that whoever came to my house had the right tools for the job. UPDATED REVIEW AFTER LEAVING 5 STARS: A couple years ago (Jan 2023), my 20+ year old water heater finally gave out (the tank cracked). So I picked up a new one from Ferguson Plumbing Supply in San Jose and began calling plumbers in the Santa Cruz area to install it. When I called Garrison Plumbing, Shanna answered the phone, and said they would come out within a day or so (Fantastic!!). I would have given Garrison Plumbing a 5 star review if not for the following Crime/ Corruption/ Dishonesty: The problem and reason I cannot recommend these people AT ALL (basically criminals), and should have filed a Small Claims Court Lawsuit against them, is that when bringing the Water Heater in the house to install it, they bashed the bottom/ side of the water heater on the corner of a work bench, and caused fairly severe damage to the Water Heater (leaving a large gash through the exterior tank wall a few inches in size). These tanks are cheaply made, but still cost almost $800 after tax. So you have to be careful. There is a thin external wall, an internal tank which holds the water, and a supportive foam insulation between the two walls. As they were installing it, I was in the house at the time and was unaware they had damaged it (and the workbench). Instead of telling me about the damage they went ahead and installed it (and installed it partially unsupported on these concrete stones I had given them for the purpose). I never would have noticed the damage, except after they left, I was inspecting the installation and I noticed that the water heater was unsupported in the back (filled with water these tanks are heavy). Where installed, it's a fairly tight space and so I got my camera and took pictures of the back with a flash to see how unsupported it was (how much was overhanging the concrete stones). When I downloaded the pictures to my computer, I was shocked to see the damage. Not only was there way too much tank unsupported, but easily visible in the images was the tank damage. The part that was unsupported is where the damage was. I became concerned that the structural integrity (support) of the inner tank which holds the water was [or could be] compromised, so I called to complain and asked why they didn't tell me? I told them I couldn't leave it as is. When Philip came out to inspect, he told me the pictures were of the old tank (obvious lies and nonsense). Even after I proved it to him indisputably, he denied responsibility. Before they left we then got into a [lightly] heated argument. Phil literally called me a liar, and said "I was just trying to get a free water heater install" (again nonsense and highly offensive). They proceeded to leave and do nothing to resolve the issue or meet me halfway (compromise) to help me get a new tank. I am a very friendly and reasonable person. People are human and sometimes make mistakes/ things happen. When you install a new water heater, they should last up to 20+ years or more (if maintained properly), and so you don't want to have a situation where water could leak and damage your house (or create a massive mold problem). So I filed a complaint with the State Contractors Licence Board, and they basically did nothing (said they had no real enforcement capabilities against the Contractor's License of Garrison Plumbing). Contractors are bonded and insured for precisely this reason (required). But Philip would not file a claim or remedy the damage/ issues they caused. Ultimately, not wanting to take a chance, I bought a new water heater and paid to have the old [new] one removed, and [the 2nd] new one installed. That cost me around $1800+. So due to their negligence and dishonesty I had a nightmare hassle, spent $thousands more than I otherwise would have, and was defamed/ had my character insulted in the process (and had no hot water for several more days and a lot of stress inflicted). So the issue here isn't necessarily competency. It's that if they damage something or something goes wrong due to their negligence, they will not take responsibility and are not honest in their business practices (and they will insult your honor and integrity). Remember that fact when considering hiring them. I want to be fair in my review by mentioning that they had previously repaired a sink drain line (in 2021) and did a good job (hence my prior 5 Star review). read more

The two fellows who arrived--on time--were competent, thorough, considerate of our needs and property, and provided helpful suggestions and advice. The people here have attitudes - bad attitudes. Did not even get a chance to get them to do work - but they charged for the quote (something Bellows and Mountain did not).. I was helping my GF with the technical details. I asked about a mixer valve as an option of controlling the heat (water furnace) separately from the hot water in showers (bellows idea in their quote).. they told me I didnt know what I was talking about (rudely I might add).. Next - I was calling all three for schedule (that was almost more important than price) and they would not answer.. I went to my office (upstairs) and called from that phone - they were ignoring me.. I asked why and she told me - we are only dealing with my GF.. it is "none of your business".. My GF asked me to deal with them because they were so rude to her and she figured it was from her lack of knowledge. Bellows is a great company and understand the heating and air business.. They are more expensive, but can meet your needs with things you may want different (higher water flow/more hot water in power failure, more savings on monthly bill).. because they understand the business.. Not sure I can say the same about Garrison.. they know how to unclog your drain and solder pipes maybe.. but they don't understand the business.. The biggest complaint is that they are rude to people and do not act professionally.. I have worked in high stress positions ! We couldn't be happier with the work Enrique did getting an old shower with a frozen handle to work! The handle is the old type that has to be pulled out to turn on but over the years it had become frozen. The people buying our house required the shower to be working so we called Garrison Plumbing. We thought the wall behind the shower would have to be cut into to get the old cartridge out of the frozen handle, but Enrique worked carefully to get the old cartridge and a new one put in within a couple of hours. Our Real estate Group has used them once before with no issues. At the sewer Lateral Inspection our Listing agent was told we passed. Then when we got the report it said we failed. We asked for a bid and said we had to have further investigation but no offer of a follow up appointment or way to resolve. We asked for Phil's number so our Listing agent could ask questions and they said we could not have his number . That he had to call her. I asked if he could call at a specific time and they said no. I'm the assistant and I am just trying to get these two connected so we can pass the inspection. Pipes drained slowly. Garrison sold my Daughter, who was in charge of the place at the time, on a $6,500 replacement of a smaller pipe with larger pipe. Unfortunately I seriously believe they were just making another job for themselves. Had they just done the original request and cleaned out the existing pipes, the outflow would have been (hopefully) plenty adequate without a $6500 pipes replacement. Since the larger pipes replaced the smaller ones, I'll never know for sure if it was necessary ir not. What also raised suspicion was that immediately after the job was done (2nd or third week of the month) I started getting almost daily emails to pay them! Phone calls to my daughter! I consided it "dunning", and certainly not in order as only a couple of days had elasped since completion. I had planned to write them a check at my 1st of the month bill pay, but their insistance got me to do it early, just to shut them up. Unpleasant experience that I do not have to endure much as my FICO is near 800. Their service guys that did the work should not be held responsible other than for recommending 6.5K of possibly needless work. They seemed competent, but for too many reasons, I would not use Garrison again. But my pipes now drain $6,500 faster than they used to. read more

Phil Garrison is a great guy, enjoyable to be around, busy but easy to work with. He has a team of fast, highly capable, and competent plumbers who can do excellent work when excellence is what you require. Personality was never an issue. Garrison Plumbing did extensive work at our property, renovating nearly our entire plumbing system. It took a couple of do-overs to get everything right and up to code, and it cost a few thousand more than we initially expected, but we ended up with an excellent plumbing system at a decent price. Garrison likes to work off of a fixed price contract, and will tailor that contract to cover precisely what you ask for. For remodels of older homes is not always easy, as you often don't know what you have until you open up a wall or floor. The key to a successful outcome with these guys is to know exactly what you want beforehand, and to carefully check the work at the end of each day to make sure you've gotten it. I would suggest that you provide Phil with as detailed a plumbing plan as possible, including the precise locations of all plumbing appliances and roof vents, with the types and sizes of all materials fully specified. If you want things built to code, get a permit. If you want a leak check, specify it in the contract. If you want copper instead of Pex in some locations, specify it. If you want something other than the minimum allowable slope on a sewer lateral, specify it. Otherwise, when the work is done under a fixed price contract, you may get an unpleasant surprise which may be very expensive to change, such as a toilet vent with 90 degree elbows below its spill line or a roof penetration through the flashing of a skylight. These guys typically work in 2's and are very expensive by the hour. When they know exactly what they're doing they're a great value. When they don't, they do it as cheaply as the contract allows. If you know what you're doing and you provide the guidance they need, they'll do a great job for you. I highly recommend them. read more

We have a community well association and we just had a tree come down and shatter the piping from our well holding tank to our main. Phil came out on time and did a great job replacing the line (4 inch PVC piping). The next day when we turned on the power we found another big leak from the well line and Phil was there within a couple of hours to take care of it. My beef with Phil at Garrison Plumbing is that IMO he has an unprofessional work ethic. I made an appt for a small plumbing job (replacing a section of copper pipe on a water heater) for a couple days out..I got a text from his employee changing the appt to a couple weeks out..no biggie. So a couple of weeks rolls by and on the day they were supposed to show up..nothing. Texted Phil about the missed appt...nothing, no text back just nothing.
