Garrison, NY - this is a trail especially popular with beginners and leisure hikers. A 3.9-mile…read moreloop on flat and gently sloped paths with minimal elevation gain (295 ft.) and many scenic viewpoints of the Hudson along these wooded trails, one can understand the wide appeal - it's an easy, relaxing, and pleasurable hike, even with little ones. Its accessibility from NYC by train (Metro-North) is another good reason. Park at or take the train to Garrison station - the trailhead is on the opposite side of the station/tracks, across the parking lot, between a couple of parking spots. Not super obvious (I try to show it in my photos below), but just look for it along the roadside. Afterwards, we hit up the town of Cold Spring for lunch, and then visited Boscobel House & Gardens nearby - amazing to catch the sunset there! It's a nice & quick day trip activity as there is lots to do and many great restaurants in the area.

I may have misspoke on the How To Write Yelp Reviews virtual class when I proclaimed, "all hiking…read moretrail reviews must be either 1 star or 5, depending on whether or not there are ticks." Arden Point occupied a niche for times when I woke up too late for Cold Spring but wanted something more rustic than Inwood Hill Park. I knew about the trees and the occasional views but not much more. On the last I got more of the full experience by seeing Glencliffe and heading across 9D toward the Castle Rock area. This isn't a hardcore adventure experience but it offers plenty of trees, occasional rocks and grass, close-up views for railfans and a couple of streams and swampy areas. Unlike some of the "transit-friendly" nature areas that require cab rides, this is a brief walk from the Garrison station. (Practical matters: no bathrooms, and if you're arriving by train there's no real town nearby for supplies - the one restaurant, Dolly's, has groceries for curbside pickup but I don't know what's there).

And you WILL actually see animals, including a black bear, porcupine and bobcat! + There are vending machines randomly located throughout the park. Yes, they are pricey, but, if you're desperate you'll fork up the $$$ for a beverage or snack. + There are public restrooms every once in awhile by Hessian Lake. + There are multiple parking lots at the park that charge $10. + There is a massive field, perfect for a game of frisbee or any sport requiring a lot of space, between the Carousel and the Bear Mountain Inn.
