Thankfully, we sought a second opinion from a trusted mechanic and took the car to Legacy in McDonough, where we were told an engine replacement was completely unnecessary. The issue turned out to be a known and documented problem with that engine model (supported by a Ford service bulletin), not a catastrophic failure. Legacy handled the fix properly, professionally, and at a fraction of the quoted cost. When we contacted Alpha Automotive about the removed engine cover, they did apologize--but that didn't change the fact that we were nearly misled into an expensive, unnecessary repair.
