Single Room with jail bed - circa 1922
    Pete B.

If you're expecting a comfortable bed, a quiet comfortable stay, and a TV in your room, this is not the place. There was noise from the pub below and all the drunks eating pizza slices on the street at the corner pizzeria. You can hear the cars driving by constantly. There was construction noise, from dump trucks and garbage trucks making extremely loud banging noises. I have no idea why this was going on at 3-4 a.m. The noise is so bad, that the hotel gives you ear plugs and makes you sign a waiver at check-in, that you have been advised of the noise. Had I known this, I would have never booked it, but it was already too late, as I had paid on Priceline. The front desk clerk at check in was polite and personable. I saw him again the next morning at check out and he was very pleasant. The night clerk was pissed off and was mean mugging the entering guests. He had a scowl on his face that said, "I hate my job and don't want to be here." Believe what others have said. The noise is real and it can be heard thru the thin windows. If you are a light sleeper, avoid this place. The bed must be from 1922, the year the hotel was supposedly constructed. You could feel all of the metal springs. It was not even a mattress. It was like sleeping on a set of boxsprings. Between the noise and horrendous bed, I did not sleep at all. The hotel promotes itself on its nostalgia and because Dillinger supposedly stayed there. Who really cares? The lobby is about the only decent part of the hotel. They have some old typewriters in a display case and a vintage phone booth. The elevator is out of order. Hope you enjoy a narrow, slippery, treacherous marble staircase with lots of luggage. The soda vending machine on my floor was out of order as well. The bathroom is shared by other rooms on the floor. Your room only comes with a sink to brush your teeth, etc., unless you pay double to get a an en suite bathroom. Hopefully you don't need to go to the restroom while someone has the door locked for an hour. I had to piss in the sink in my room twice. There are lots of renovations that were taking place. And some of the rooms are just used to store junk. Much of the property appeared to be in a state of disrepair. I don't know what they are improving, but I do know that you can't polish a turd. The best thing about this property is the downtown location if you have business in the area or at UTEP, as the street car route is right across the street. I only gave it 2 stars because of the location. Otherwise, it is a quaint, nostalgic 1-star dump. Every other hotel in downtown El Paso is better. Much better. Do yourself a favor. Spend the extra money and stay at one of the other properties.

The hotel is a trippy time-warp in the heart of Downtown El Paso. The service and amenities are bare-bones but the savings and unique experience are definitely worth it. Very LGBT+ friendly and on the same block as many of the local gay bars. The shared-bathrooms are super clean and not nearly as intimidating as it might seem for Americans used to having their own bathrooms.

The Gardner Hotel has lots of history on display.

Great stay at The Gardner. Fantastic location downtown and a three minute walk to the passport office. Room was clean, but you will need ear plugs as there is a music venue next door. Best value for the location. Cute and quirky!

Meh. As poor quality as this hotel room was, i would say it was still not the worst. We've definitely had a good helping of hotel rooms over the years with the Army moving us around. Service and quality of the room here still beat a couple places. We'll start with parking which is almost non-existent. I tried to look for a bigger sign for parking than it actually is. I had to call the hotel clerk a few times so she can explain where to find it. It was literally a 4 car space area with a small sign "hotel loading zone." And once that was full, you basically need to just find some other area which you would need to pay and walk quite a ways. Second, the room temperature was warm, almost hot. Even at night after the temp drops. The only accommodation would be to open the top latch over our door to let in cold air from the AC vent that was literally blasting through the hallway. Third, even though they warn you about the noise level being loud, it still doesnt make the experience better. The fore warning was more to tell us no refunds from the noise level. This is all thanks to the lower level also occupied by The Pizza Joint and the other bars along with their loud drunkees. And since The Pizza Joint doesnt close until 3am, you will hear loud ass cranking sounds from them closing up that time. I would say the only thing that redeems them is the historical value to the place, especially since we believe we got to spend the night in John Dillingers room, 121. Pretty cool. Thats the most value of it though. Not worth 75$ but probably the cheapest rate downtown.

I arrived at midnight via Uber from the airport so I just wanted to go shower and straight to bed. I was hungry the next morning. The waffle maker timer is broken so I had to estimate how long is was cooking my waffles before I noticed it wasnt counting down. I really wanted to have a positive experience at Embassy Suites by Hilton El Paso, but…read moreunfortunately, this has been one of the most frustrating hotel stays I have experienced. I am here for work for a total of nine nights, and within the first five days there has been an issue nearly every single day. The problems actually began at check in. My company had already prepaid for my room, but I was initially told that my personal card would be charged for the entire nine night stay. I was then told I would personally be responsible for a deposit of more than $200. It took approximately an hour to get everything straightened out. I later learned that my company had actually been charged twice for the room and had to have one of the charges reversed. On Monday, the air conditioning in my room was not working properly. When I called the front desk, I was actually told, "It's working, it's just not working well." That was the response to an acknowledged problem with the AC. Tuesday night, the smoke detector began chirping and disrupted my sleep. Wednesday brought a much more concerning problem. I was riding the elevator to the 7th floor when it stopped at my floor, but the doors did not open. I had to press the open door button several times before they finally opened and I was able to get out. Shortly afterward, I was told that the elevator was out of service and stuck on the 7th floor. It remained that way overnight. Housekeeping also did not service my room that day. Thursday night, at around midnight, my room phone rang three separate times from the front desk. They were trying to reach Room 801. I am in Room 702. After several long workdays, being repeatedly awakened around midnight because the front desk was calling the wrong room was incredibly frustrating. Then came Friday. I woke up to no running water. I tried calling the front desk and received no answer. I contacted the hotel through the Hilton app and received no response there either. I eventually went downstairs and found a small sign at the front desk saying that the water had been shut off because of an emergency. That small sign was the only notice I personally saw anywhere in the hotel. There had been no notification to my room or through the app that I saw. One or two inconveniences during a long hotel stay are understandable. Things break. Emergencies happen. But this has been one problem after another: billing confusion and a duplicate charge, malfunctioning AC, a chirping smoke detector, missed housekeeping, an elevator malfunction while I was inside it, three unnecessary midnight phone calls, no running water, unanswered calls to the front desk, and poor communication about the water shutoff. For someone staying here for work, these aren't insignificant inconveniences. I need to be able to sleep, shower, get ready for work, and return at the end of the day to a safe and functioning hotel room. There is, however, one person who deserves tremendous recognition: Antonio, one of the housemen. Antonio has been the bright spot of this stay. I have personally watched him go above and beyond to make guests feel welcomed and appreciated. He is friendly, attentive, hardworking, and genuinely seems to care about the people staying here. In a stay filled with problems, his hospitality has stood out even more. I don't want the problems with this property to take anything away from an employee who is doing an exceptional job. Antonio deserves recognition at the highest level Hilton can provide. He represents exactly the kind of hospitality I expected when staying with Hilton. He is the only reason I am giving this location 2 stars. Unfortunately, one outstanding employee cannot compensate for the number of operational, maintenance, communication, and safety issues I have experienced during this stay. At this point, with several nights of my reservation still remaining, I should not be wondering what is going to go wrong next. I sincerely hope Hilton and the management of this property take these concerns seriously, particularly the elevator and smoke detector issues, and recognize Antonio for being an exceptional representative of hospitality despite everything happening around him.

The gentleman working the breakfast area was incredibly kind and frequently checked on guests. The manager (jet-black hair and a big black mustache) was also very friendly and welcoming. There's a Starbucks right in the parking lot. The lobby and exterior were attractive and well-maintained. You can tell someone takes pride in the property's appearance. Unfortunately, the guest rooms told a different story. Our first night was spent in a double queen room where the towels smelled strongly of mildew and the heater took forever to warm the room. For the remainder of our stay, we moved into a king suite with a rollaway bed. Initially I was excited. More space, bigger bed, huge closet, and even a balcony! Then reality set in. The balcony was filthy and the view wasn't exactly something I'd call scenic. The bathroom doorknob was broken, the bathroom door didn't fit properly in the frame, and the ceiling was actually coming down. Every time the door opened or closed it scraped against the ceiling. There was also a leak under the sink, forcing us to use our bath towels to soak up water. The biggest disappointment, however, was the housekeeping staff. Several employees appeared visibly irritated when we declined room service early one morning. One employee became noticeably upset and began loudly speaking in Spanish while looking directly at me. When I asked if there was a problem, the answer was "No." Whether there was a misunderstanding or not, the interaction felt uncomfortable and unprofessional. I reported it to the front desk, but it seemed to be brushed aside. Overall, the hotel staff at the front desk and breakfast area were wonderful, but the condition of the room and the housekeeping experience overshadowed the positives.

I arrived late in the evening and the lady at the desk rushed me through check in without bothering to inform me of the amenities or when breakfast was served. I'm very familiar with these things but this was the first time they were not mentioned. I was given the option to pick which floor I would like to be on and I chose the ground floor. I'm usually assigned to the second or third floor so I thought not having to go up the stairs would be nice for a change. Oh how wrong I was... My room was really close to the lobby and I could hear the muffled voices and shuffling of every person who walked through the area. Someone had a really bad cough and they weren't being quiet about it. I went to the soda fountain a couple of times during the night to refill my cup and the lady at the desk scowled at me every time. I guess I was interrupting the videos she was watching on her phone. The noise from the lobby eventually quieted down and I was able to fall asleep around midnight, but then I was abruptly woken up at 5am by the fire alarm. I wasn't sure what it was at first because it was a sharp shriek that cut off and repeated every 10 seconds or so instead of a continuous siren like most fire alarms. I went out into the hall to see other guests wondering what was going on. I went to the front desk and another employee was fiddling with the emergency controls in the red box on the wall. She was manually silencing the alarm every time it went off, which explained the sudden cut off in the noise. She asked what I wanted and I asked if there was an emergency and if we needed to evacuate. She nonchalantly told me that someone was either smoking in their room or tampering with the fire alarm but there was no emergency. I was concerned about the latter statement but she told me there was nothing she could do about it. She was on the phone with someone (maybe the management, or maybe the fire department) but I was too irritated to care so I went back to my room. Many more guests had entered the lobby in various states of confusion and concern but they were also told "no emergency." I tried going back to sleep but I couldn't due to all the other people in the area, and then I started hearing what I thought was an air compressor filling it's tank. I couldn't figure out what the noise was exactly, but it happened every 5 minutes and would last about 30 seconds before stopping. I went back to the hallway and looked at the elevator but it made a different sound. Since sleep was no longer an option, I stayed awake and packed up around 7:30am. On my way to the lobby I heard the sound again and realized that it was being made by these two commercial refrigerators in a closet at the end of the hall. I was sort of right in the fact that it was a compressor making the noise, but I didn't think a refrigerator was the cause. There was a different lady at the desk and she didn't ask about my stay when I checked out. She asked if I wanted my receipt, but that was it. If she was informed about the chaos that happened a few hours earlier, I imagine she didn't want guests to have the invitation to complain by asking "how was everything?" I was too tired and pissed off to say anything so I left. I had booked my reservation three weeks ago and got a great deal on the one night for $80 (it was actually $95 after taxes). My previous stay at this hotel was about three months ago and after last night, I'm seriously reconsidering staying at this hotel again. Oh, there's also an abandoned van sitting in the parking lot. It's been out there for at least five months and the tires are all flat. I asked the staff about it during my last stay because I keep seeing it but they told me it wasn't their concern. So a broken down, abandoned vehicle languishing in your parking lot isn't your concern? Ok.

The valet service was fantastic as well--I never had to worry about parking, and the staff were always friendly and helpful. The gym was also well-equipped, with towels provided, a good variety of equipment, and even a Pilates machine. Unfortunately, my experience with the front desk staff, particularly a morning employee named Edgar, left a very negative impression. On more than one occasion, I returned to the hotel and stood outside the entrance for 15-20 minutes waiting to be let in.
