Jamie Oliver's Diner Gatwick - Overcooked and tough

I really like his HBO news show, I think ill let him cook me breakfast.. Well.. wrong Jamie Oliver.. this J-O is actually a famous British Chef. And his Diner is absolutely awful. It was needlessly expensive even by airport standards. My steak was made of rubber, and hands down... the worst choice I made on this trip.

An unexpected, yet unsurprising find at an airport. I felt like I was in one of the malls in…read moreLondon.. not that I've ever been to one but that's what it felt like. I suppose because of how famous this guy is, especially considering that it's British food, of all cuisines, his restaurant is actually not disappointing. It wasn't great or anything but it wasn't terrible either. I got the Jamie's super corn & quinoa salad, the name makes it sound more glorious than it actually was. The salad was good, it did the trick, but the lack of lettuce, under the salad section, was a little disappointing. But overall, it was still pretty good. Not much to say about it, the picture kind of tells all you need to know about it. As long as you know how to cook quinoa properly, I think you can't really go wrong making this salad. My sister got the special of the day. Jamie's meatballs and waffle. I don't know if you will get the same kind of special or if they would make this again if it weren't on the board.. as I didn't see anything like that on the menu. The meatballs were delicious. Meaty but not gross or greasy. The waffle, however, was kinda too thick. It had lost all its waffle-crunchiness due to the meatball sauce and the meat juices. But just eating all the meatballs off the top was enough to fill one up, maybe plus a little bit of the crispy waffle bits. If possible, if I ever somehow decide to come back here, I'd see if I can order the waffles and the meat separately. Prices are reasonable for the portions you get. But given that this is a restaurant located in the airport, they need a little bit of work in getting their food ready on time. Most of the time people stop here because they're waiting for their plane to board or waiting for their layover to be over with, as was our case. But we still managed to stuff our face in time to catch the plane. So no harm done. But if you have less than an hour before your plane is called to board and you want to sit down to eat, I'd suggest getting it to go just to be safe. Bonus added- they have charging outlets with their booths. So if your phones are running low on juice, see if you can request to sit against a wall or a divider. Service is good. British. Tentative without overbearing. I like it.

The tables were a little small but that might just be my jacket taking up a lot of room. I got set 4 with no substitutes and a hot coffee, which was nothing special but hits the spot. The food, like the others have mentioned, is a bit bland but that's what the ketchup and other condiments are for. I was very full and my parents left satisfied so I would call this a win. I wouldn't make a trek to try this place but if you're in the area for breakfast, I would suggest stopping by in the morning.

Aficionados of "Passport to Pimlico" will recognise the location as being opposite the bombsite at the beginning of the film. They serve a range of traditional English breakfast options, and lunches, which include sandwiches, baked potatoes, and omelettes, as well as fry ups, you can have all day. There are plenty of vegetarian options, but I'm not sure if any are vegan. Service is quick and efficient, and the prices are very reasonable. Some of the serving staff are very pleasant and smiley, others less so. But it remains extremely popular at all times of the day. (NB. They are not open in the evening.)

Things were looking promising when I saw a vegetarian breakfast offered in lieu of the traditional English breakfast. I was drawn to the dish because it offered spinach and hash browns in lieu of all the meat in its partner dish. My friend ordered the regular Full English and her dish came out well before mine. I waited roughly 10-15 minutes longer for something that would appear to take less cook time. The plate came out and I noticed there was no spinach. I was not offered a choice as a substitute nor made aware of the situation. Long story short I ended up ordering the Full English and they forgot my black pudding. Waited additional time for that as well. Then they forgot I asked for the bill. Overall, I would not recommend it, especially if you're on a time schedule and multiple mishaps occurred. No cash accepted and 12.5% service charge automatically added to the final bill with the usual VAT.
