We were set up to meet back at Thomas Connolly bar for our free pint of Guinness. We shared some tables in the back while one of the ladies performed on her guitar as well as her Irish whistle. She claims she used to perform with the Chieftains back in the day. Very funny and knowledgeable. She asked for a drummer so I offered up my had at keeping time on her oversized tamberine (flat drum). All the pubs so far have very friendly staff.

The barman are brilliant, so friendly and accommodating, and you're not standing 4 deep from the bar to order a drink like other places. On Friday's they host a regular vinyl night from Turn It On, a pretty unique night out for Sligo and its consistently good - they mix it up with a range of different people playing their vinyl collections on the decks every week, it could be shoegaze one night, house another! There's always some sort of music night on here, on various nights of the week - they're quite active on social media, so check out their facebook page to see whats on. The drink prices are unbeatable, you'll have change from a tenner if you order two spirits (and a dash in each). There's a tiny wee smoking area down the back near the toilets, which is likely part of its attraction, so you're not left loitering outside the front door on the street - you still feel part of the place, by not leaving the building. The interior is standard for an Irish pub but there's a eclectic collections of curios behind the bar - reflecting the owner Paul's tastes, and by extension the cooler clientele it attracts - stickers from the famous Ace Bar in London for example. Its a really great night out if you're in Sligo, and you'll meet some interesting people here - of all ages.

Instead, it was a narrow gothic bar filled with stained glass, nooks and crannies and an old musty smell. If Harry Potter had jumped out of the shadows I wouldn't have been surprised! The musicians sat at the front of the pub and when we arrived only amounted to three: button accordion, rhythm guitar and flute. Within twenty minutes or so, however, a couple more fiddlers showed up, one who was a man with a newsboy cap and a whimsical smile on his face. The moment he began playing it was obvious that he was an expert at courting a crowd. He had that charisma and vitality. A bar patron informed us that this fiddler was none other than Steve Wickham of the famous band the Waterboys, a musician widely regarded as the world's best rock fiddle player. According to what we were told, he lived just outside Sligo and loved to frequent Shoot the Crows for trad sessions. His playing infused the session with a frenetic energy and they played Music for a Found Harmonium, as well as a set of Maid Behind the Bar, Cooleys and Sally Gardens. Wonderful renditions! The atmosphere at the pub was very welcoming and supportive of the musicians and due to the length of the bar, if music wasnt your thing, you could easily have sat at the back of the place, unbothered by the tinkling up front. But if you like trad and don't mind a little grungy goth, you'll find some magic here.

'Shoots' as its affectionately known locally, would be my first choice for a drink out with friends. By virtue of the 'cosy' atmosphere of this wee pub, this place fills up quickly at weekends. For a catch up with friends the coveted seat down the back with the roaring turf fire is the place to be. The bar staff are great, always up for a chat, and don't throw us out on our ear when we've overstayed our welcome on Saturday night. Its that sort of place, you'd happily spend the evening here - meeting old and new faces. Despite coming here over the past five years when I'm home in Sligo, I've never actually been here for a trad session, shockingly as it seems to be renowned for it. The seating is a bit battered, so ladies - don't wear your best hosiery for fear of getting it caught on a nail or whatever, and the toilets are a bit grotty, but that's not what makes this place five star. The soundtrack is the excited hum of conversation. No TV playing football on a loop, a feature that detracts from some of my other favourite pubs in this town. The famous window at the front changes design every few months - painted by a local artist, one of the many things that make this place unique. Don't overlook this spot on a trip to Sligo!

We sat in the dining area and there was hardly anyone there because the bar was packed with people watching Rugby. Let me just say that it was great just getting to observe the cheering and such - I don't understand rugby but I sure wanted to learn about after seeing that bar so expressive. The food was really good - I had a steak and it was just what the doctor orders - cooked perfectly. Here is my favorite part - our waitress. I asked her about the Browns English mustard - because I finally tried it (I didn't know it would be a mustard with horseradish and hadn't tried it until this restaurant. When I jokingly asked how she would feel if all the packets on our table disappeared to my purse she laughed and said she might be able to help add a few more. Once we paid and we're finishing our drinks she brought me a large bag filled with said mustard packets. Also she gave us great insight into some of the other items we had recently tried with a mix of history and personal stories. We had so much fun that night we extended our stay a bit the next day to explore more of the area.

We wanted hearty irish fare! When we entered, I was a bit put-off that no one greeted us or showed us into the restaurant area (you walk into the bar section of the building). When we found our way over, we weren't sure if we should wait to be seated or seat ourselves. Finally the one waitress in the whole place waved us to sit wherever. We reviewed the lunch menu, and I was starting to regret choosing this place since there wasn't a lot of options. However, we needed food and went ahead and ordered. I got a goats cheese and chicken wrap with vegetable soup, and my mom got seafood chowder. When the food came (at different times, unfortunately), it was piping hot! My mom's chowder was actually boiling. My wrap was cheesy and creamy and delicious. I only wish it had been hotter. However, the soup was divine!!! It was the perfect temperature, very creamy and hearty. I hadn't had this style of vegetable soup (pureed rather than chunky), but it was a great introduction! My mom's chowder, once cooled enough to eat, was very hearty and thick. It was tasty and had a ton of kinds of seafood in it.
