I grew up eating Sri Lankan food occasionally as my parents lived there for 3 years back in the day, and my mom had the good fortune (for me) to learn how to cook the food from a fabulous man named Arthur. So believe me when I say this place is fabulous (don't judge it by the decor).
Must haves:
Sri Lankan chicken
Green bean (with white sauce rather than red),
Chana masala (slightly different than the normal Indian version)
Kottu Rotti (almost like a biriyani but with thinly sliced paratha not rice)
Aubergine (smokey and spicy)
Venthaya (onion)
Mixed vegetable
Get a side of coconut sambol if it doesn't come with your meal, it is fabulous.
For bread, the paratha is excellent, and on a good day is the single best Indian/Sri Lankan bread experience that I've had.
The lamb and fish curries I had were only decent, so I would try others instead. If you are a hodi fan, skip it here, one of the few let downs on the menu.
The food is quite spicy, so a normal or mild is enough for all except the most inveterate chili lovers.
The prices? So reasonable it seems like it must be a non-profit. (Most full dishes are between 4 and 5.50, and you can get a lunch deal for one with 4 curries, a drink and bread for under 8.)
I used to travel 45 minutes on the train regularly to eat here and take away a massive order for the week--worth every minutes of that trip. read more
