The entrance is down a side alley off of Old County Road so it can be easy to miss. However, once you pull in, there is plenty of parking. There is a big grassy area to run around in and then a playground, separated for little and big kids, but with a connecting gate. Not a huge play structure but good enough for the little ones to burn off some energy. There is also a bathroom located onsite and for a public bathroom, it was pleasantly very well maintained and very clean.

The play area has rubberized floor for safety, tents above the structures for some shade from the harsh cali summer sun, and very light touches of a log-cabin/ wood theme. For younger kids the most dangerous and sometimes fun areas are: -The larger slide, getting to the top is a bit sketchy with a small ladder you have to climb off of to the right instead of straight. The slide itself is almost hilariously tall with lots of bumps and tight curves that seem like they are designed to injure your kid, just look at the pictures. -Wave machine, if your kid is into space and nasa you can get them an early start by jumping on one end of this and launching them into orbit.

However, I have noticed some safety and maintenance issues lately that hold it back from being a perfect 5-star experience. My main concern is safety regarding motorized vehicles. I frequently see local teens and kids--sometimes even elementary-aged children accompanied by their parents--riding gas-powered mini bikes or loud electric dirt bikes directly on the sports fields and paved walking paths. It is unclear whether there are explicit rules prohibiting these vehicles in the park, but no one is around to monitor the situation, and it honestly feels dangerous for pedestrians, field users, and anyone on the paved paths. Additionally, while the park is well-maintained overall, certain small details need closer attention. Specifically, some of the water fountains are poorly adjusted--either barely trickling or spraying water in every direction. It's a fantastic park overall, but better patrolling, clearer safety regulations, and quicker equipment maintenance are definitely needed to keep everyone safe. 4 out of 5 stars.

The softball lord must be in Redwood City (apologies to Nilsson)…read more https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2swOlajJ-zU Hawes Field is where my late uncle played in the Redwood City Señors Softball Club (get it?) before retiring with physical ailments. He wasn't able to play there after it was retrofitted in 2010 with a new electric scoreboard, an expanded scorer's booth behind the backstop, and a pristine artificial-turf outfield to save money on maintaining grass. If my softball compadres from Culver City's two semi-acceptable fields were to step onto Hawes, they'd likely think they, too, had gone to that sparkling diamond in the sky. However, Hawes Field only permits coed and senior rec softball for adults; left field is too shallow for men's leagues despite the tall outfield fence, said the field supervisor before a Sunday coed game. Longballs that clear the barrier count as a third out, and the batter is ejected for that game and the next, she said. Ample parking borders the left side of the field, but the fences along the sidewalk cannot contain high foul balls, and posted signs clearly warn of that risk. She said sunflower seeds are forbidden inside the facility because removing the shells requires vacuuming (dream on), and they clog drains when it rains. A variety of youth sports are played at Hawes, as in other cities' multi-use parks, but its turf withstands that beating, unlike grass outfields that degrade into wasteland until reseeded. You can bet that the field doesn't host annual city festivals (e.g. La Ballona in Culver City) featuring pony rides and carnival attractions. Northern California natives chortled at the news some 40 years ago when Astroturf replaced grass on (irony) Lawndale's Hawthorne Boulevard medians. They mocked L.A. as being "plastic." Today, city coffers are emptier for whatever reasons, water is scarce and, even in Bay Area parks, plastic is beginning to look divine.

According to the fact sheet, this area is 11.2 acres. There's just large amounts of lawn where you can have an isolated picnic, and it's a fairly long stroll for a neighborhood park. It's cool that it runs next to a mini creek, closer to the residential houses. For sports, there are areas for sand volleyball, basketball, tennis (four courts), soccer, and baseball (which looked well maintained, with bleachers). There's a large playground with tanbark and picnic tables. There is an additional covered pavilion (technically you need to contact a city official to reserve this) with picnic tables and small coal barbecue pits, though they looked pretty rusty and dirty. Next to these tables is this amphitheater-like section. Parking is somewhat in a small lot, but there's street parking all over the perimeter that's readily available. The bathroom size is above average, for a neighborhood park. The main park in Foster City is superior, but this park is not bad if you want more seclusion, in some sense. It's right next to a highly trafficked road, but expansive enough to accommodate many parties without bumping into each other.

Purpose of visit: birthday party…read more Under-appreciated gem tucked into the heart of San Carlos, near Burton Park. I hosted a birthday party for children there and the kiddos loved it. We were in the Game Room (vs the Art Room) --highly recommend because they can hop from activity to activity. Some played Nintendo Switch on one of the two large TVs (multiple controllers) while others played ping pong or the basketball arcade game. There's also a pool table & foosball table, with plenty of seating and conveniently located next to the restrooms (and water fountain). Everything was in good working order and well maintained. Half of the time for the party is spent in this room, the other half (for pizza and sundae bar) were hosted in the dance studio room, which was a nice change of scenery and kept the kids entertained. Shout out to the staff who look after the kids and the facility. Love that they offer the pizza and ice cream as add ons because coordinating food while managing the party is always a challenge. I brought some salad to supplement and it was no big deal. They provide the plates, utensils, table cloths, and light decorations. I will be back for more birthday parties until my kids grow out of it.
