Finnieston, West End

This isn't technically a bad branch of PC World. It's quite big, spread across two floors and…read morethere's tonnes of parking space if you've driven here. It has a large range of items available and a good selection within those. You'll fine laptops, tablets, printers, TVs, cameras, speakers, and household appliances. Plus cables and accessories. What you'll probably struggle to find is what you're looking for or anyone who can help. After wandering the store for ten minutes trying to find a hard drive, I wandered for another five trying to find a sales assistant. No luck. I even tried standing near some expensive stuff in the hope that someone would appear to try to sell me something but that didn't work either. Eventually I stumbled across the hard drives by accident but they were (in my opinion) overpriced. It all felt like a bit of a waste of time. If you want an iPad or a TV you won't struggle to find it, although I'd shop online first to make sure you don't pay over the odds, but if you want a smaller item or accessory you could be wandering around for a while.

PC World can be quite an infuriating experience. You have a quick browse at the new computers and…read morefind that the machine you bought for £1000 two weeks ago has already been replaced by something ten times as powerful and half the price. That's not really PC World's fault though, and after the anger subsides this really is an excellent store for pretty much anything to do with computers. They also do games consoles and other techy treats such as digital photo frames and Blu-Ray players, so a trip in here for a memory stick can easily turn into an hour long trawl through an orgy of consumer electronics. I was pleasantly surprised by the staff as well. I came in to buy a router and expected the salesman to insist I need the most expensive one whilst demanding I take out a ten year warranty on it, but he actually recommended the cheapest option. I hope he gets employee of the month.

Shawlands, South Side

To be honest, I only went in here because it's a few doors up from my house, but I'm very glad I…read moredid. They sell laptops but they also do laptop repairs at what I think are pretty reasonable prices (I've not got much to compare them to but I never feel I'm getting ripped off). I first went in when my laptop keyboard started losing keys at an alarming rate and they replaced the whole keyboard for £20. Then, more recently, my laptop was overheating quite badly (probably because it was full of sawdust after I got a new kitchen put in this summer) and they sorted that for £30. I also bought my other half a lovely little notebook computer which came installed with WIndows XP, some open source Office software and Microsoft Security Essentials anti-virus software. It was £150 but they gave me £20 off in exchange for an old Advent laptop I'd been meaning to get rid of for ages. The notebook also came with a six month guarantee so I know we can just go back in if anything goes wrong. I've never had any issues with stuff we've bought here or repairs they've carried out. The guys running the shop are really friendly, really helpful, especially the Irish guy who I think must be the owner. I know there are laptop repair shops all over the place nowadays but if you're in Shawlands then I'd definitely recommend this place.

The Memory Men…read more For your computer to work, you need adequate RAM. Random access memory. It sort of keeps track of what's going on inside and does the multitasking at rather an alarming rate of knots. Well, at least that's how I understand it as a non-geek. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAM probably proves me wrong, but I don't really care. My ageing but friendly machine was getting noticeably sluggish and a friend in the know suggested that I check out to what extent more RAM could be added. So off we saunter to the manufacturer's website, where we are posed the following questions. Name Product Range Model Serial number etc. etc. (Well - at least I didn't have to register, login, remember what my mother was once called etc.) Athletic efforts ensue to retrieve this information, lifting the box up high and desperately reading tiny labels in the hope of reaching enlightenment. Finally we almost get there, at least having some of the information, but unfortunately not enough to get full information on the site A quick phone call to PC-World reveals that the particular type of RAM for this general range of PC was no longer stocked. Bugger! My friend says "Check out Crucial.com" One click on the above URL and I am offered the use of their Crucial System Scanner tool and hit the appropriate button. Photo link: http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd76/Textklick/Qype%20pix/439710d0.png In seconds, it scans my computer, tells me the precise model number and spec, its configuration and their suggested upgrade. Effectively, it is telling me how much RAM I have, what the upgrade limits are, which particular upgrade options I have and which I should avoid (marking these in red). Its the equivalent of being instantly diagnosed and told how many replacement kneecaps - of which shape and type - you require, if you want to run in the London Marathon. Transparency rules! I select, add to basket, go to checkout and receive confirmation. In 18 hours, the 2 new cards arrive and get fitted. I switch on and whoosh! We are turbo-charged! If you think your computer is a bit sluggish, then try their scanner (if you are not geekishly inclined it might be worthwhile checking with one who is in the know). They also do modules, CMOS sensors, microdisplays, multichip packages etc. but this scanning thing is brilliant! Note: the image is their logo, to which they of course hold .

I called a couple of local PC engineers one of which told me to go on to the Crucial website to analyse my system. Bloomin eck within seconds it scanned the puter, told me what system I had, how much RAM was installed, how much I could put in, then gave me suggestions to put it right with a price including free delivery!!! Very, very reasonable price compared to Maplins etc. Plus whatever their system suggests is GUARANTEED to work or money back. Under £22 for 2 1gig memory incl shipping. Will use again if need to and tell others too.
