Been in here often enough now that I feel I can properly review the store and staff. Upgrading from my "tip" earlier. The staff here is likely knowledgeable when it comes to games, which I don't play many of the types of games they offer her. Just not my cup of tea. On the comics side, which I feel is enough to review them on, since it is advertised on the sign, there is a large selection, but it's not that great. Mostly new books, yes there are rows of back issues, but it's all common stuff, nothing a big collector needs. The staff that is here most of the time doesn't know a lot about the comics side of the store, the few times I've asked I've been told the comics guy is only there on Wednesdays. Such is life. Luckily for me I know the comics industry well enough to not need a lot of help with my choices. It's a good shop for comics, just not great. read more

Game Room - Comic Books Near Me - Toledo, Ohio

Places smells and I feel gross coming out of there. It feels unorganized and the customer service or should I say lack there of is in need of assistance. You ask a question even if they are just standing there reading they are very short and rude with you. While they do have a large comic book selection and 40k selection. It does not out weigh the way I was treated, the cleanliness, and the organization. I'll take the drive to other cleaner and friendly game shops. read more

This is one of my favorite places to go to get my comics. Their selection isn't nearly as big as JC's Comic Stop but the atmosphere is more family like. They have a big selection of trade paper backs and they keep their monthlys up to date. I have made it a habit of going weekly to pick up my next issue. They are an active gaming store as well. They sell card games, role playing games, miniatures. You can play in store with you friends if you want to. I regularly see people of all ages hanging out and chatting painting their figurines, playing a small campaign. I think that they have regular tournaments. They sell snacks and drinks if you want to hang out. The staff is a bunch of geeks and they are all nice and helpful. read more

A little Sketchy from the outside but its the best comic/game shop I've ever been to on the inside. Prices are fair and selection is HUGE! The dice and mini selection is amazing. Comics are in a huge room and cover the walls in an impressive display. There are also dollar comic bins year round :) This shop is defiantly worth a look. read more

This is a game store. It says so in the name. Yes, it sells comics because most gamers also like comics, but it is primarily a game store. And it's an excellent one. The place is a nice size. I'm new to the Midwest from the East Coast and everything seems large to me, but the Game Room has at last ten large tables at which people can play games. When I stopped in on a Wednesday afternoon, there was a dude teaching some complicated card game to two people at one of the tables. They do demos regularly here (like every Saturday) and it's a great way to learn a new game before plunking down the money. I offhandedly mentioned a game I love that they stopped making in the 80s. A staff person knew about it and introduced me to 2 similar games. He talked a lot about play time, learning curve, and other ways of distinguishing. He knew what he was talking about. The selection of games was interesting. A million and a half miniatures were up in the biggest room and a very good selection of nerdy board games.in a smaller room. These are the types of games for players that think Settlers is a good entry level. However, the D&D selection was a little sparse. They had all the way back to Second Edition for sale, but it was a hodge podge comprising one largish bookcase as compared to the space devoted to the other games. If you're looking for a comic shop, I'd give it about three and a half stars. It had a nice selection of back issues-- which is kind of unnecessary in the Ebay age, but nice all the same. The selection of new issues was good for this week, but last week's comics were long gone. If you've got a pull list and go every Wednesday, you'll be fine, but it's not really for a once a month shopper. The environment is a little dingy. It has the feeling of your mom's basement, which is probably where you played most of your games, and is therefore a little charming. It didn't seem dirty or smelly, but it looked a little worn. What they lack in aesthetic charm, they really make up in those tables upon tables to play games with games out for display. I can't wait to make this place a weekly visit. read more

When in Toledo, I usually always stop in at The Game Room. It one of Toledo's best gaming stores. They have all your gaming needs plus lots of space to play. My friends have special ordered stuff and the staff have always come through for them. Old stuff and new stuff, they have it all! read more

The problem with a lot of gaming stores is they tend to have a huge comic book section, and a tiny game section kinda squeezed into the corner. This place seems to have flipped that expectation, though it's slightly more balanced. This store is mainly about the games, but they've got a lot of comics as well, with comics covering one entire wall from floor to ceiling. They've got a great selection of gaming books - everything from D&D (you can find a huge selection from every edition) to World of Darkness to Shadowrun to a few more indie games are there. A room off to the side that I hesitated to go into the first time I went there (it was dimly lit and looked like a store room at first glance) has a good selection of board games, as well. They've also got the biggest mini collection I've seen outside of online retailers. Probably the best place in Toledo to get Warhammer stuff. My only problems is that there's not a lot of ventilation, and when you come in on a hot summer day during one of the tournaments they host it can get a bit.. whiffy. Also, parking is a pain and if you show up during a tournament day you can just forget finding a spot in the tiny lot behind the building. read more

A small update to the little comic shop of horrors, as things clearly have not improved since my review. I'll skip to the downright sexist attitudes of every male staff worker that I've encountered. I'd like to say that the instances of my fiancee being marginalized for being "just a girl" comic reader were only her experience, but I've talked a multitude of women who have shared a similar issue. Questioning a customer on whether or not they want to buy something based upon their gender is never cool, and the ancient register dorks at Game Room need to learn that maybe they shouldn't alienate a section of their consumer base that is growing every year. I would also be remiss if I did not mention the fact that Game Room was the only local store requiring a purchase on Free Comic Book Day (hence the word "free") that required a purchase in order to obtain said FREE books. When asked about it, an employee of the store mocked the idea of giving them away for free, saying that is not how one runs a business. Right. Go elsewhere for your nerd stuff. Checkmate. Monarch. Seann's. Any place but here. They don't deserve your money. read more

I've been shopping at the Game Room for about 10 years or more. I love the place. Paul, the main comic guy, who is there Tues thru Thurs, loves comics, the culture, and he's great with customers. Over the years I've seen him recommend great books to people of all persuasions, and he enthusiastically pushes all ages books which I appreciate, as a father of a comics lover glad I can go there to get books. He'll special order titles he doesn't stock, and has a deep knowledge of what he has in his back issue bins. I'd like to address a few of the complaints here. I'll grant that some of the staff and regular customers are doofuses, the kinds of guys parodied in movies and jokes about nerd culture. But my wife and female friends have never been made to feel out of place by Paul, and in fact I know and see several regular female customers there. Maybe, if you go again, try visiting in Weds when he's there. And on the issue of Free Comic Book Day, you know the shops pay for those books? And aren't you already buying titles regularly anyway? Why would you complain about free w purchase if you're already buying comics weekly? It's one of the best stocked and well organized shops in town. Sean's is great, and so is JC's, and so is Monarch. I've shopped, and like, all of them. But I've had the best experience at the Game Room. read more
