As for the rest, they have everything a good deli should have; a glass counter stuffed with meats and cheeses and fresh pasta, shelves laden with everything you could ever need to make an Italian style feast and friendly, if slightly stern staff. I am not particularly foody and as evidenced by my explanation of why I was in the deli in the first place, I really have no business around fine foods. This might be why the man who works (probably owns) Gallo Nero doesnt seem to like me though he froths all over my Nigella Lawson of a sister though and I often wait outside like a petualnt child as they discuss the best kind of pesto to go with noodles, or pasta or whatever. It is a beautiful shop and strolling off the high street in to Gallo's cosy, tavern like interior is about as close I'm going to come to an Italian weekend break any time soon.

But make the effort to go to this rather than any of the other local joints for the super fresh veg. There isn't a huge selection but they do have, and this is why I love this place so much, big trays of great salads (none of your iceberg crud) and huge bunches of super fresh herbs. And a ton of limes for a quid to boot. Great if you're planning a cocktail fest. Having said all this, last time I went, raining again and dragging my partner from the far side of Stoke Newington to get there all the salads and herbs were limp. I guess we all have our off days.

If you want to make pasta there is a wide variety of fresh and frozen. If you need olives, they've got you covered. The shop even sells ice cream, coffee, wine and other canned goods. What I like about this shop is that the staff is warm and knows a thing or two on Italian cuisine. If you purchase fresh pasta they will tell you how to cook it to perfection and will even suggest a number of sauces or meats to go with it.
