She would play samples of a few things by ear during our consultation and somehow had sheet music for a lot of obscure things I thought for sure we'd have to track down. I wouldn't have thought a musician would be a highlight of the day and I certainly hadn't budgeted for live music at the ceremony. If someone hadn't told me how distracting ipod music changes could be, I probably would have gone that route and then been really sad listening to my wedding video. Jan's husband is a marriage commisioner and because of that she knows all the cues in the ceremony he officiated for us and the music transitions were better than one could imagine. The aliveness of the harp vs recorded music was so much more beautiful and it made me much more emotional walking down the aisle than anything I could have pumped out on the speakers. She learned a few pieces for us too which made things extra special. My husband entered to star wars on the harp... yup. She also played some alice in wonderland songs for our themed wedding which was just perfect. I certainly would recommend Jan if you're looking for a harpest or if you are looking for an eleigant way to bring music to a wedding ceremony. As we were…read moreleaving the venue, my mom and i were going down the escalator and the Indian lady who was in charge of controlling who was going into the escalator didn't let me go on DESPITE my multiple times saying that "THAT'S MY MOM" and she pushed my hand off the railing. Yet, she let people go in before me with their mom and they were the same race as her. Staff needs better training and better interpersonal skills and needs to learn to treat guests especially who come for a graduation out of the country better and not physically. Horrible experience because of this and i'm disappointed such a distinguished college chose this place for a graduation.

Bruce Adlington was our marriage commissioner and he did such a wonderful job for us at our…read morewedding. Everything was very smooth from initial phone calls all the way to the day of. He took the time to really get a good feel for us and our relationship and he was a soothing presence when we got very emotional at the altar. He has just the right amounts of soothing presence, humor and command of the room to be a wonderful commissioner. I've been to many weddings and I've seen some commissioners that are to cold, to impersonal, to humorous, to serious, to quiet or too much the center of attention that it distracted but Bruce was just right. He even had a top hat in his closet which matched our theme very well and we were delighted he offered to wear it for us. Even though we had a small wedding, I know he booked another wedding because my aunt raved to her friend about how good he was at ours (and when would that normally happen?) He let us customize the ceremony. He e-mailed us his generic and then let us write in things. He then would put it into his own words to make it flow. I found when I got his generic ceremony it was already without many of the yucky parts I wanted to remove.. like the whole obey things. eww. We didn't make a lot of changes because I already liked it, but we did add some special parts and that all went smoothly. He also gave us a decorative print out of the ceremony which was nice. Some things I would recommend: We had a small wedding that was accoustically alive and I was still greatful for the ceremony being amplified with microphones. Bruce has his own system that can be used for this. Bruce's wife is a harpist and I never would have thought we'd hire a ceremony musician but I'm glad I did after experiencing the frustrations of prerecorded music at the reception. Jan of Avalon Harp and Bruce have done this together so often the music and the ceremony just flowed well through all the transitions and sounds wonderful on the video. Bruce kind of sold us on thinking about it and we are glad we booked them together. Although we had a ceremony at a venue, he has a nice yard he uses for small weddings at his home which is something that might interest some people. I would certainly encourage anyone getting married to give him a call if you're looking for a marriage commissioner.
