My siblings and I had to place my mom in a facility unexpectedly this past summer after our father…read moresuddenly died. We did not realize the level of care that she would need due to memory issues, but we were given several indications from Asher Point that she would be given the help she needed, particularly with support from their "resident ambassador" that would spend time helping my mom acclimate and from the Angel Care service that could help with daily needs and routines. We were also assured that there would be a "concierge" placed at the front door that could help things that may be needed at night. We placed my mom in the facility with these assurances and paid the first month fees as well as the $2500 activities fee. It only took a week for us to realize that it was not the right living situation for our mom. My sister and I could not leave without concerns for my mom's well being. The "resident ambassador" did nothing to try to welcome or acclimate our mom. She was not anywhere to be found. Even when our mom was sick for two days and did not show up for any meals, NO ONE checked in on her. I know this to be true because I stayed with her in her room that whole time to make sure she was alright. Observations of Angel Care service showed inattention in several cases, with workers just hanging out on their phones for hours at a time, making it not an option that we wanted to pursue. Additionally, there was no concierge at the front, and the doors would be locked at night, allowing people to go out but not to come in. If my mom ever left at night, she would be locked out, and no one would know she was gone! We decided we needed to move our mom back out and when we notified the staff, saying that we would pay for the month, but asking for the activities fee back, we were told they would take it to corporate. Three months later, we did not get any money back, but were instead charged for four more days because we did not give 30 days notice! When efforts were made to communicate further about billing, multiple calls and voicemails went unanswered and unreturned. I would not recommend Asher Point for any level of actual care beyond just a place to live. They are corporately run and seem to only care about their bottom line.

(But take what the sales agent Hunter says with a grain of salt...he exaggerates a lot...The reality is that each person will truly be on their own....no one....no one...no one keeps track of the residents. He actually said if someone leaves the building....they don't do any kind of "bed checks" to see if everyone is back safely), IF they need any assistance at all....even minimal...DO NOT rely on Asher Point to help, and especially not the on sight assistant team, Angels of Mercy. I paid for the highest care package from AOM...and I can honestly say within three months of moving in there my mother was almost dead. I place the blame squarely on the AOM's shoulders. They were supposed to check on her every 2-3 hours every day, and throughout the night. they did not. She would lay in her bed for hours and hours with no one checking on her. The final straw was she spent the night vomiting, while laying on her back....NO ONE knew. The next morning (10 hours since her last angel visit) she told the hack what happened all night and was met with a smart aleck reply that there was nothing wrong with her. Well, she ended up in the hospital with a distended bladder, uti and bowel obstruction. All of which could have killed her. None of the aids were concerned with her high fever and vomiting. No one even took her temperature or even so much as touched her forehead to see if she was hot. She was admitted with 106 temp. She's 86. Additionally, we were promised an additional call button for the building for emergency needs. We had one from the Angels..which by the way, takes hours for them to come...and when they do they chastise them for using it...When I asked for the building call button Hunter told me he had no idea what I was talking about...yet he was the one who originally told me about it. To date we have never gotten it. It's ok though...we moved my mom out because we feared for her life there. We simply could not trust the Angels anymore. Also...my research has determined that the Independent living concept with on sight, but separate care teams like the Angels of Mercy have zero state or federal oversight...which means...NO ONE is looking into complaints or issues. NO random spot checks to ensure care givers are doing the right thing. Basically this means you will have to blindly trust they do what they sell you....but in reality...they are only taking your money...($1500.00 per month extra) Lastly, like the other reviewer stated...we too paid an additional 2500.00 to move her in. We were told it was an "acclimation fee"...what ever the hell that means. Once they got her money the staff never did anything to "acclimate" my mom. They never even came to her room to see if everything was ok. That's total B.S. The only person that came to her room was the maintenance man who came to holler at us for propping open the door to get some cold air into the room....her room AC was not functioning properly.... There's one guy there named Cameron. Of all the staff, he's the only one that ever took the time to talk to my Mom and would stop by her room if he was on her floor just to say Hi. other than that...the rest you can put in a bucket and toss in the dump....especially the Angels of Mercy. again...I reiterate...DO NOT TRUST them with your loved one's care...AT ALL... not even their laundry...which is a whole other story... I will gladly speak to anyone who wants me to tell you the rest of the story...but in a nutshell Hunter and Michelle (owner of AoM) will sell you the moon and stars...but in reality you won't get anything for your money except an overpriced apartment....(which by the way only has one elevator...so your loved ones that can't take the stairs will not be able to get out in a fire...(my mom was stuck on the third floor for 2 days...because she's wheel chair bound). But that's another story for another day.... To sum it up...I wish there was a rating her to select that is even worse than "not good"

Constant staff turnover. Kitchen is short staffed regularly too. Resident care was lacking to the point we hired in daily sitters. Then they without cause called FD to have our mother taken out of the facility without the 30-day required notice per her lease and wouldn't allow her to come back citing her level of care exceeded their capabilities. We had sitters doing what they should have been doing. If they would get rid of the GM it might return to being a good place to send loved one. Otherwise, I don't recommend it. The fire alarms go off constantly and there are regular issues with the plumbing to where is turned off for hours at a time. Her 1st couple of months there I would have rated a 5 but with this GM in charge I give it a 1 star. Save your money and look elsewhere.

Donna was helpful in arranging the care plan meeting and serving as a contact person for questions, and there was also a Donna at the front desk who was very helpful. Brittany kindly called with a reminder about the meeting. Angel, Dallas, Monica, Jessica, Katherine Hunter, and Reagan Young were also kind and helpful in different ways. Rachel was especially thoughtful. She kept her word and called with an update on Tim's swallowing and speech therapy, and we appreciated that very much. She also gave my brother a stuffed snake and another stuffed animal, which meant a great deal. We also appreciated a tall gentleman in the building who kindly helped us know where to go. The bathrooms and restrooms were very clean and organized, the meals were tasty, and everyone we have dealt with at Aspire has been very nice and very helpful. Mark Elders for Tim Elders

They are not friendly. They do not check on the patients. Was told they come by every hour or 2 at minimum. They do not! The CNA comes anytime we need something, but the nurses are awful and lazy! Beautiful building, but don't judge the book by its cover. This one is neglectful on the inside. I think administration wants it to be better, but not sure much progress is being made. The rehab therapists seem to be top notch. The menu provides a variety of foods. Since all nursing facilities in Alabama are fall at will facilities due to CMS, I asked who I sue if she falls and gets a brain bleed or is injured in some way while at this facility... now I see something similar did happen to Traci R.'s dad a few years. Calls to speak to the physician has the administration/managers calling me back... but they can't answer medical questions. They may be able to read from a chart, (but is that ethical or does it violate HIPPA?), but they cannot answer actual questions. I am not happy. I did not want her to be placed here. The only saving grace is the PT team. They say she is doing great and should be out next week! God, I pray she is!

If you hate your parents this is the place to send them, unfortunately I love my dad and this place…read moreleft me with PTSD and I am currently undergoing therapy as a result of the way the staff treated me and my father. The emotional abuse and negligence the staff inflicted upon us was unconscionable and this was the most unprofessional medical environment I've ever encountered. This is a paraphrased version of the complaint I have sent to the relevant state department in charge of overseeing nursing homes. My dad spent three short days at South Haven in hospice care and the negligence and unprofessional conduct by the staff worsened the already traumatic experience of losing a father. I will try to document as much as possible. The bed they gave him was broken and he couldn't sit up. He kept on asking me to help him set up. I asked five times for a working bed because all he wanted to do was sit up. This went on for two days. He finally a working bed two hours before he died and by then he was so far gone that he couldn't appreciate it. He was transferred without any medication and spent the first day in pain and suffering without any relief the first day.  My Dad held a phD in Pharmacy and has worked at both major pharmaceutical companies and top research universities in the US. He kept on requesting the staff for specific meds to deal with his ailments, and I explained to them his medical background and what he was trying to communicate (he had difficulty communicating due to his stroke) and they ignored him and didn't document anything or report it back to the physician.  I could tell this upset him deeply as they weren't respecting his medical wishes or even giving him the time of day. My father stripped off his hospital robes because they were nasty and uncomfortable.  The nurses advised me that I get him more comfortable clothing, so I did.  They then ignored my requests to change him and left him in bed for three hours in a diaper convulsing in pain and misery unmedicated, and with no air conditioning to provide any relief. He was left like this for over three hours as I begged staff to dress him so he could have some dignity in his final moments.  They just kept telling me someone will be there in ten minutes for three hours. Other staff said that his wing was not their responsibility, as they were too busy gossiping and slacking off to help. The staff said they'd clip his toenails and then didn't. I should have documented those, they were disgusting.  They kept saying they would for days, but he died with filthy, overgrown toenails. At one point my Dad was obviously distressed and suffering and began shouting and calling for help.  I asked a nurse in the hallway to check on him and the nurse replied, and I quote verbatim, "I will f***ing check on him when it's f***ing time to check on him" and walked past me.  At this point I'm distraught and in tears and they could have cared less. The lack of empathy among the staff continued throughout the entire stay. My Dad's roommate was watching Fox News and True Crime documentaries that were causing him distress.  I played George Gershwin music to calm him down and his roommate called to complain and the staff had the gall to tell me to stop playing music.  So, my Dad is crying and hallucinating, I'm doing my best to soothe him in his last moments and in the background the television is saying sick depraved stuff like "and then they found her bloody underwear in the trunk" It was cold and inhumane of the staff to make that demand of me and I'm pretty sure it goes against the policies of the home to allow one roommate to watch TV while the other roommate dies in silence. Screw them, I put the music back on. It's just one of many examples of how they treated us. Another point my Dad started choking and when I asked the staff for assistance he said I was, once again quoting: "wasting his f**** time" while he was removing fluids from my dad's throat.  It then took over two hours for him to give my dad his hourly medication, which I feel was done in retaliation for "inconveniencing" him because I didn't want my dad to choke. They called us at 4am to come get my Dad's belongings when he died. They wouldn't let us wait until the morning otherwise they were going to throw out my $2000 laptop along with the rest of his belongings. What a miserable place. Only send your loved ones here if you hate them. if I wasn't there, my dad would have spent the last days of his life rotting in a diaper. Even if you go there, the staff will retaliate against your dying, suffering father for simply asking them to do their job. This nursing home made me fail as a son, because I flew across the world to make sure that I could say goodbye to my dad and make sure he could die in comfort. This place denied me of that and I will never forgive them for it.
