This first floor galley is unmanned and free to the public. The exhibits rotate frequently. I've attended city meetings and trainings in this space which is a nice change from regular conference rooms to say the least. The building is quiet with not much foot traffic. It's a perfect getaway if you're in downtown and want a moment to yourself. The restaurant O'live is next door.

I love their gallery which is always filled with interesting and thought-provoking contemporary works by local artists. It is an open and spacious gallery that allows you time to reflect on the works at hand. Their cultural event offerings include artist talks and marketplaces where you can shop for unique items directly from the artists and makers. I have yet to make it to their Day of the Dead exhibition or the Mole Throwdown but they are definitely on my to-do list for those days! There is free and plentiful parking in front and behind the building. Their neighbors are SAPD so make sure to park within the lines. This is a space I definitely need to visit much more often.

The grounds are also administered by the Blue Heron Recovery Group, which manages opportunities for folks in recovery. Los Patios is a pretty location surrounded by live oaks. It's quiet, peaceful, and calm. Whether you're eating or passing through, the location provides great respite from the summer sun or the busy-ness of the city. Worth a visit if you're looking for tranquility and shade.

After reading Curt C's review on history of Villita Assembly Building, it's amazing to see it has not changed much since it was built. It retained the luster from the 60's. It was the first convention center in San Antonio. The dimmed lights in the hall created a cosmos effect. It's like a peaceful starry night. Watch my video. This assembly hall is the place to be during Fiesta, when they have the German oompah bands…read moreplaying, with sausage on a stick and a stein of lager! It's a beautiful old building, built in 1959. It's quite impressive that it has a 132' foot diameter, with a steel-cable roof suspension system holding it up. The concave roof and upper walls are covered with large precast panels. It's cool that the exterior of the place is covered in Mexican brick, making neat little courtyard enclosures around a patio garden. When you're headed in, check out the ceramic medallions on the outside near the entryway. It's a great old building, and it's almost mandatory that you have to do the Chicken Dance while in there at least once. There are easy restrooms to access, and it's air conditioned!

Could have eaten that forever! The dessert was exquisite and overall a perfect evening! Will be going back for the food and the soft Hispanic boho vibes.
