This place used to be amazing before it was sold. Now it's very commercialized, just a business. My dogs are family, I want them treated with love. The workers here have an attitude and act like you are bothering them when you ask simple questions and want to know how your dogs are doing there. Both my dogs started having behaviors that made me feel something bad was happening to them. One started pooping in the car on the way there and crying, something she has never done. The other one also was very anxious, and twice refused to go in the building. Previously they had loved going to daycare. The dogs are taken in the back in an area you can't view- so you don't know what's happening or how your dogs are being treated. My gut told me something was wrong. I put them in a different daycare, which is open (you can view them playing) and treats them like family, world of difference, best thing I ever did. I heard one of the girls at the front desk go beyond "front desk" duties to help 3 customers with issues they had. You never really hear what goes on when you just drop your dog off for grooming or daycare but after listening to what was going on this morning- even in the middle of high volume drop offs- I fully entrust my dog here. Besides all that...... All I have to say to Zoe is...... Hey Zoe, do you want to go to Daycare? Her face and yelping all the way to the resort says it all for me. We use Gagnon's to board our two dogs when we go out of town. We have used them for the past 3 years and have never had a bad experience. We also take advantage of their grooming services on the last day of our dogs stay and they come home clean and smelling great! Gagnons offers "peace of mind" for a dollar a day in case your dog does get kennel cough, they will cover the vet visit for a certain time period after the stay. I appreciate having a safe place for my dogs and the report card they provide after each stay. Highly recommend! read more

At that time she said someone would call me back later, once they'd looked at the schedule. And Another week has gone by. All I want to do is Mark my Calendar with a date!! I don't care if it's next week or next month! Why is it So hard to get someone to follow through with a call back to set up an appointment?? Two weeks ago, I was told that they'd just gotten their calendars for 2025. Perfect. Put my cats names in there somewhere, and call me back with the date! It's been two weeks waiting for a call already. If you don't have time for them, then give me the courtesy of a call back to tell me that, so I can make arrangements Elsewhere! We're all busy, but this is your business. Follow through. How much longer will I have to wait for a call back? Just to wait How Much Longer.. to Actually get them in to be groomed? It's like they Wait for pets to be matted, so they can charge an extra fee, for snarls! I called bc they needed to be groomed, not to wait a month, and Then get them groomed. I have been bringing my dogs to John Gagnon's Pet Resort for doggie daycare and have also left them in their kennels a few times over the last 4 months. I am very happy with the services they provide for my pets! We cannot say "daycare" in our home without the dogs crying to go and following us around the house until we leave. This is BY FAR the best daycare/boarding facility in the state. I use to live 20 min away and would bring my dog Billy almost every day. Since moving to Barkhamsted, which is about an hour away, I have tried about 5 other places through the and they never came close to Gagnon's in terms of staff, the facility, and just over all how how I felt about leaving my dog there. He is the most excited when he comes here so I know he loves it too!! I still bring him here when I go out of town for business or vacation even though I drive by at least 5 other places that he has been to before on my way here. I would choose this one over any other facility any day of the week. He absolutely loves it here and the staff is amazing and definitely loves him too and it shows. I highly highly suggest them and will continue to drive an hour here because I know he is well taken care of! I love that they post pictures regularly and provide report cards from boarding as well! We are searching for a safe and reliable dog boarding facility in our area. After visiting this business, we will keep looking. I opted to not place my dog there because I found the kennels to be small, worn, and not very well ventilated. The place was a little messy and not in the orderly fashion I would expect from their own website description. The staff was friendly, but that's not why I would bring my dog there. At the time of our visit, over 35 dogs were running around outside while the boarder dogs sat in their pens. The deal breaker? No staff onsite during the evenings. read more

I have been a customer of John Gagnons Pet Resort since 2003. I have always had great experiences there for a multitude of my Labradors. Recently after one of our storms, here in CT, my Invisible Fence started "acting up". Luckily John Gagnon does all brands of hidden fencing now. I called him to get my Invisible fence checked out. I got a really quick appointment and I was lucky enough to get "Liza" to come out. She absolutely fixed the fenced in record time!!! This is the 3rd time Liza has been here. Prior to John Gagnon selling the business to a corporation we were very pleased with their service. That has all changed with the new ownership. We recently dropped our dog off for boarding and left medications and instructions at the reception desk when we dropped him off. The staff took careful notes about the medication and checked our dog in. The next day I received a call during a funeral from the kennel manager stating that we can no longer board our dog there because he had a medical issue. John Gagnon's made no mention of this policy when we made the reservation or at reception when they took our dog and his medication in for boarding. When I received a follow up call from the kennel manager to apologize I asked why were weren't informed of the policy when we dropped off our dog or made the reservation. She had no cogent explanation. When asked why the kennel manager felt the urgency to call me after they accepted our dog for boarding she stated that she wanted me to know the policy. I asked why it could not wait until we returned as there was nothing we could do during the funeral she nonsensically stated she did not know when we were coming back even though the reservation information is at the front desk and in the computer. As kennel manager I am sure she would have had access to that information. John Gagnon really cared about animals and his business. It is sad to see the level of care and compassion decline, at least in my experience, under new ownership. read more

We've been extremely grateful for John Gagnon's and their staff for several years. One of our dogs is life reactive and we went to a few trainers who wrote her off. The staff at Gagnon's immediately took to her and saw through her acting out for what it was - anxiety, not aggression. They've made it possible for us to have a life outside of our home as their facility is the only place, aside from her house, that Pippa is comfortable. In fact she seems to know the days she's going to daycare as she wakes up with extra pep in her step. It's extraordinary to see a dog who screams and alligator rolls when she sees dogs typically, happily prance back to spend the day with dozens of other dogs. There's also nothing better than walking back to our car after drop off and hearing how excitedly the staff is greeting our dogs by name (not knowing we are even listening). Aside from them quite literally being Pip's lifesaver, our recent experience with them took their service to a new level. While we were away they reached out to let us know both of our dogs were sick. They went above and beyond, even taking them to the vet, getting them medication, and making sure they had the best care. The staff stayed in close contact with us and we were able to breathe easy knowing our dogs were being looked after by people who loved them. I completely trust the team with my beloved dogs - I know they are well cared for and come home happy (and exhausted). My dogs are my children and I only want the best for them. I recently moved to Colchester and wanted to find a local day care for my dogs so I could drop them off for play time several times a week. So I decided that I'd stop in to check out their day care. When I got there there were two employees at the front desk and when they found out we wanted a tour the front desk got onto a handheld radio to call in back to let everyone know that a tour was happening. After her radio transmission they left us waiting 5 mins and the only thing I could think of was, "What are they trying to hide back there". It wasn't like they were busy at the front desk and there were two of them there and all they wanted to do was buy time while everyone in back prepared for a potential customer walking through. So when the tour finally happened they brought us to the empty kennel and empty play yard which was super muddy due to the pouring rain. When we went back inside we were told that we could not see the daycare because they didn't want to interrupt the dogs. That made me extremely concerned, especially since they knew that's why we were there. So we never got to see it and I can't imagine what they were hiding. Also they advertise nail trimming for $10.00 on the board behind the front desk. When I had my dogs nails trimmed they asked if I wanted their nails filed with a Dremel or if I wanted them sharp after the clipping. I politely said dremmeled. Then they brought the dogs in back and I ended up paying $15.00 each. Guess it's extra for the Dremel even though I've always seen this done elsewhere at no additional cost, always assumed it was part of the service. To top it off when the groomer brings the puppies out they tell me they always use the Dremel because it's easier and faster. So I just paid 50% more than advertised. After all of this I look down at their nails and I realize that all they did was file down the tips of their nails and barely took off any of their nails. Based on my experiences I cannot recommend them. The fact that they won't let you in back without a heads up to their staff concerns me. They may say it's a safety precaution calling in back but that doesn't explain not allowing us to see the day care. And the way they bamboozled me with the price of the nail trim has left me with very negative feelings towards the way they conduct their business and I will never return or recommend this business. read more

I have been bringin my pittie Apollo here for months. Great attentive staff, always able to get my updates on my pup. Never had any issues. The only reason why I didnt give it 5 stars is for pricing - I have more than one dog and it would cost a fortune to consistently bring all my dogs. I would suggest a better discount program - perhaps getting a bigger discount by buying in bulk ($300 for 12 daycare sessions) something similar to that. My pup is there right now! :) read more

Our dogs graduated last night from training class. What a great experience and Darcy is such a great trainer! I'm continuing to take my two small chihuahua's to day camp at least once every two weeks since May and they love going. They bring all the dogs inside when the temperature gets too warm or it's raining. We'll continue to be customers and may look at other courses (agility maybe!) for my chi's. read more

My 8 year old lab does not get on with other dogs, not aggressive, just indifferent, no interest in playing with them. In an effort to get improve her social skills with not only other dogs, but also with other people, I began bringing her to John Gagnon's for doggie day care 2 days per week while I'm at work. There has been marked improvement with other people, which I'm thrilled to see. Still not a fan of other dogs, but is much braver, hoping she gets comfortable enough to do engage in dog play a little ways down the road. What I really love is that they all know her by name, cater to her. She gets nervous around other dogs and won't eliminate, so I asked that they bring her our front occasionally, and they were happy to do so. The staff also recognizes when she needs a break from the yard and lets her "relax" behind the desk with the staff, whom she seems to have really taken a liking to. I'd bring her three days per week but it's too expensive, hence the 4-star rating. This place has been a life saver for me and my dog, MacPhee. I was having severe issues with his biting me while playing as he wanted to "attack" me all the time. I was desperate. First, I had Amanda visit for in-house training. She gave me great advice about preventing him from jumping and I saw an immediate improvement. After that, I decided to dive into Doggie Day Care and wow...what a change that made. The staff is terrific and the exercise and socializing for MacPhee made such a difference. He is a Border Collie and after a full day of playing with other dogs he is typically exhausted or, at least less energetic (for a Border Collie!). When we do play it is with no biting and the jumping is mostly gone. I highly recommend this place. It is always clean and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Even if your dog is not a problem, the socializing alone is worth it. read more

Please be warned... if you love your pet, do NOT send them here. My 3 dogs are my babies. I went away on a two week trip and was very stressed about where to leave them as I usually have family take care of them when I am away. Since this was a family trip I did not have anyone to watch my dogs so I decided to board them with John Gagnon's based on some positive word of mouth feedback I had received. My chihuahua has Cushing's Disease, which causes uncontrollable hunger. As such, we left specific, clear instructions that she be fed separately from the other dogs in her cage, as she will fight (and win) for the other's food. Upon picking up my pups, my chihuahua was the size of a rugby ball with a purple swollen belly, while my other 2 terriers had lost significant weight with abrasions on their noses from in-fighting over food. Over the course of these 2 weeks, it was clear that my sweet chihuahua was eating the equivalent of 3 dogs worth of food daily. After almost a day after discharge, she is still having trouble breathing and walking due to the significant weight gain. Being extremely upset, I contacted Gagnon's immediately to express my dismay and concern. The initial reaction was less than satisfying, as if I was bothering them with a concern about my pets health under their care. I was told the manager would call me the next morning. 3pm the next day, the "manager" finally returned my phone call. When explaining my concern again, the manager decided to derail the situation by discussing the 2 types of Cushing's disease. I calmly explained to her that I was fully aware of the full background and conditions of Cushing's, but that doesn't explain why my Chihuahua almost ate herself to death in their care. My statement was met with a response of how the manager can't speak for the staff, and that "nobody is perfect". Which frighten's me; when you leave your family with a "reputable" establishment, you'd expect professionalism and health standards to be followed. Would you drop your child off at a day care, and have the day care tell you they can't expect to know how their staff is treating your child? Regardless of a not so clear promise of a discount next time we leave our pups with Gagnon's, which We WILL NOT, we will be nursing our sweet pups back to healthy weights and diets. Please protect your your beloved pets, do NOT trust these people. They do NOT care about the animals in their care. read more

We have never had a problem boarding our 2 dogs here, we typically opt for them to be groomed while they stay and they come out looking great. Our dogs never get anxious when we bring them there and in fact out little one was almost upset that he had to leave, as he's very social and enjoys the playtime. The staff could be a little better organized but there was nothing concerning. We also had toured the facility when they first opened and were impressed by the quality of the cages and dividers between the cages. I prefer this kennel over the nearest alternative, Candlewick, as it is a newer facility, easily accessible from rt. 2 and my dogs seem to prefer it. read more

Wnen I arrived, they said they never received them. :( They wouldn't take my dog without proof of rabies. When I got home, I called my vet, and asked them to please re-fax, (they insisted they did and it was successful the day before) My vet said they had issues in the past with this place not getting their faxes( or losing them???). furthermore she said they usually confirm over the phone, which they did not do for me.
