I was a patient of Dr. Singh for five years, but my experience with his office ended on an extremely disappointing note. After questioning an extra charge for an eye exam during a full exam, I was abruptly dropped as a patient. Apparently, Dr. Singh does not believe in prioritizing patient care over billing disputes. When this happened, I repeatedly requested my medical records, but his office refused to provide them. Recently, I began experiencing severe pain behind my eyes and needed either to see Dr. Singh or obtain my records so I could go elsewhere. After multiple calls, it took them 10 days to respond--only to tell me that Dr. Singh still refused to see me. However, they finally decided to release my medical records after all this unnecessary back-and-forth. It is appalling that a doctor would allow his ego to interfere with patient care to this extent. A simple misunderstanding about billing should not have resulted in being dismissed as a patient, especially when I made an effort to move past it. If you want a doctor who can drop you on a whim, ignore your medical needs, and delay providing essential records, then Dr. Singh might be the right choice. Otherwise, I strongly suggest finding a physician who actually prioritizes patient health over personal grievances. read more

The office overbooks patients. I arrived 8 minutes early for an 11:30AM appointment. The waiting room had three patients who were sequentially called in to the treatment area. An older couple arrvied at 11:50AM and were called in at noon. 30+ minutes waiting, still not called in - that was it! I informed the front desk that I was leaving. They certainly wasted my time. Unquestionably, Dr. Singh seems like a really nice guy. He is an outgoing individual and, more important, he enjoys a fine reputation for his surgical skills. (My highly trusted optometrist -- Dr. Richard Rebuck of Ranson, WV -- recommended that I rely on Dr. Singh.) I needed to have cataracts removed and replaced with standard interocular lenses (IOLs). I did not need an astigmatic lens or lenses that, ideally, correction of both near-sightedness and far-sightedness. His nurse or office manager -- I don't know her exact role -- gave me a tablet computer that showed a video that slickly encouraged me to opt for use of a laser rather than a scalpel. Given the enhanced safety supposedly offered by the laser, I opted for its use. I was informed that laser use would cost $1,800 per eye, over and above whatever Medicare paid. I called the Dr. Singh's office the following day, and asked why the $3,600 (vs. the no-additional-charge-via-Medicare) option was needed. She told me that that Dr. Singh recommended the laser in my case to help prevent the rare-but-real possibility of a retinal tear caused by use of the scalpel given my many years of myopia. I spoke that evening with a friend and mentioned my upcoming surgery. My friend expressed some surprise about the additional $1,800-per-eye charge and suggested I check it out. I did exactly that and was both disappointed and angered when I found this: Femto and Cataract Patients' Best Interests Protecting patients from unethical practices and acting in their best interests is the primary tenet of the Academy Code of Ethics. Both the Principles and the Rules of the Code address the ophthalmologist's responsibility to act in this way. When an ophthalmic surgeon has a professionally related commercial interest--such as sole or joint ownership of a femtosecond laser device--the potential exists for a conflict of interest in patient care. It is essential that con­flicting commercial interests not interfere with appropriate care. Femto with a conventional IOL: A surgeon may use a femtosecond laser during cataract surgery when a conventional IOL is implanted (rather than a presbyopia- or astigmatic-correcting IOL), but neither the surgeon nor the facility may obtain additional reimbursement from either Medicare or the Medicare beneficiary over and above the Medicare-allowable amount. Leading patients to believe that you can charge them for this use of the femtosecond laser--for example, via advertisements or in-office financial-aid forms--mis­represents both the services to be performed and the charges made for those services. This misrepresentation limits the patient's autonomy in making ap­propriate informed decisions for his or her eye care. In the event of an unex­pected surgical outcome, the fact of this misrepresentation will weigh heavily against the ophthalmologist if the patient initiates a medicolegal liability action. Charging the patient for this particular use of the femtosecond laser may violate several rules of the Academy's Code of Ethics. The rules con­cerned with conflict of interest and potential misrepresentation in the above scenario include the following rules: 2. Informed Consent; 9. Medical and Surgical Procedures; 11. Commercial Relationships; 13. Communications to the Public; and 15. Conflict of Interest. Not surprisingly, I chose a different ophthalmologist. I don't know how many people have paid Dr. Singh $1,800 per eye for insertion of a standard IOL. It seems to me that each one of them should have their money refunded and that Dr. Singh should cease what seems to be an unethical practice. read more

I met with Dr. Singh today and he was funny, vivacious, outgoing, and knowledgeable. His first comment to me was "I like your shoes!" which really lightened up the atmosphere. He looked at my eye several times and asked several medical questions of me to determine the issue in my right eye. He prescribed a steroid drop abut also explained why the drops I took prescribed by my G.P. did not work. The staff was very pleasant and took their time taking measurements, test, and diagnoses. My blood shot eye was looking much better by late afternoon, thanks to the steroid drops. read more

Dr. Singh diagnosed and performed the surgery to treat my left eye for lens cataracts. I can see great now from that affected eye and had no complications post-surgery! He not only is a knowledgeable ophthalmologist, but he also has a great "chair-side manner"; always very pleasant and genuinely interested in hearing my input as a patient and giving me straight-forward information back. I recommend him highly if you live in the Germantown, Maryland area. read more

He has been patient and explains everything in detail to my father, taking time to answer all questions. In November 2015 I experienced a horrible ulcer on my left eye. I was in extreme pain and lost partial vision. I went to Dr. Singh and he advised me to get to Willis Eye Hospital immediately. Every once in a while, you find an Ophthalmologist who is professionally and personally above the rest. Dr. Singh is very compassionate, taking the time to explain eye disease and care options. I recently had cataract surgery which was pain free with great results! His bedside manner is very reassuring. At 64 I had developed catteracts and was recommended to Dr. Singh by another eye doctor. My experience and results couldn't of been better. I do not recommend Gagan Singh. My visit was for a stye that was getting bigger over the last 2 months. Read his previous reviews, and I made an appointment for 5:45pm, and arrived at 5:30pm. I waited in the waiting room for 30 minutes. Not to mention they take payments upfront!!! $149 for new patients. His assistant called me in and made me read the letters on the wall, then told me to go back out and wait. (He had wayyyy too many patients, so it is pointless even making appointments. Not professional at all) I waited for about 20 minutes, and finally was told to come back in. Singh stated the stye was not noticeable, and if I thought it was noticeable, I should put make up on it. (I told him that it's infected, and so I should not put makeup on it!) He also advised I put hot compression on (which I have been doing for the last 2 months). Then he just did some reading of my eye with his light, and told me to come back in 3-4 months if the stye does not go away. Prescribed me with eye drops, which he confirmed that it will not help get rid of the stye (so what's the point of paying $20 for drops then?) I was very frustrated and made a statement saying "So I spent $149 to wait about 2 hours, and to hear to put make up on and come back in 3-4 months if it's still there?" Singh got upset and made a statement saying "Did I not check your eyes with my tools? These degrees around you did not just come itself" And walked out the door PISSED OFF. I would give him a little more respect by calling him by Dr. but this is not how you treat a patient. And how could he recommend I cover my stye with makeup!! No more glasses, not ever! I had cataracts and problems with close-up and distant sight. After having my cataracts removed and new inserts my vision is perfect. My only problem is remembering to wear my sunglasses when out in the sun as I had transition lenses. I am amazed that I can read the newspaper without assistance. Very disappointed, made an appointment three months ago, almost did not because the receptionist was so unaccommodating. Arrived today for my 4:15 appointment to find a room full of patients, including the person who came in behind me who was scheduled for the same time I was. When asked if this was protocol to schedule two clients at the same time and was told it was so they are actively treating the patients with disregard. One doctor, multiple patients for a time slot, running hours behind...another arrogant doctor who thinks their time is more valuable than the patients. Was told I could reschedule for September like they were doing me a favor..... I was ushered to the back asking what the problem was, unfriendly grab of my arm, actually told the person not to touch me again. Obviously busy but treating patients with disregard...eventually catches up. Never have this problem scheduling doctors appointments outside of Jefferson County, my first appointment with him was in his Maryland office, did not have this problem, guess it is just the riff raff of Jefferson County who do not need to be treated with respect.......You should be embarrassed Dr. Singh. read more
