A few years ago when I lived nearby I attended Ormeau Health Centre as my local GP Surgery. As with all Surgeries these days, getting an appointment unfortunately proved tricky, with waits of up to a few days or even weeks on occasion. Thankfully though, they did offer a convenient telephone line whereby you could ring and speak to a Doctor or order prescriptions. You can also book appointments online and order repeat prescriptions 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week via their website. Plus Ormeau Health Centre have a travel clinic if you need to get jabs for your holidays. I always found the Receptionists, Nurses and Doctors friendly, helpful and professional. I would give this clinic a full 5 star rating if it weren't for the long waiting times before obtaining an appointment. Plus only allowing 10 minutes per patient for a Doctors appointment feels very rushed. However I think this is an issue with the Health Service overall (or our politicians and government) rather than this particular clinic, which I always found excellent.

I am an extremely infrequent visitor to the doctors and like most men I tend to let things get excruciating before I finally admit that I need to see a doctor. With this in mind I wasn't actually registered with a doctor it had been so long since my last visit. So just before Christmas I decided to get registered somewhere close to where I lived. I firstly went to a practice at the bottom of the Antrim Road which resembled a prison, luckily for me they weren't registering new patients, so I wandered further up the road and came to Salisbury Medical Practice. The practice itself resembles an old victorian manor house, welcoming, grand and warm. The doctors and staff evoke the same feelings. I went in to the practice on my first visit and to be honest I didn't even expect to be able to register but to my surprise they asked me to come back that afternoon to new patient registration (Thursday's). Once registered which was a simple process I was then able to book an appointment. To my complete and utter shock I was able to get one the next morning at 10am - Let's put this in to perspective. In 24 hours I was registered, booked and seen by a nurse and doctor. I can not recommend this practice enough - highly professional and caring. Easily the best medical experience of my life. For anyone worried about me, it's just a football injury!

Routine appointments are often booked up well in advance but they have a triage system whereby when you phone in the morning you receive a call back from either one of the GPs or the Nurse Practitioner who will discuss your symptoms and decide how soon you need to be seen, appointments are kept specifically for this purpose. I have lost track of how many GPs actually work here but there are 6 consulting rooms around the main waiting area at the back, a small room opposite a treatment room & a larger treatment room beside reception. Most staff are polite, friendly & helpful. Self service check in allows for quick check in and a reduction in queues at reception. You can register for online services too which allows you to securely book/cancel appointments and order repeat prescriptions. You can nominate a local pharmacy to collect your prescriptions too to save a journey, very handy service indeed.

Two ladies stand out And the young man , a tall blonde lady not sure of her ethnicity and an older English lady both have my utmost respect. Some of the patients are a disgrace with their attitudes.

I had come to the surgery for my diabetes blood test results. My doctor said nothing about the results, instead he told me to come back in two weeks time for another blood test. I refused to have that test because I saw no point of having another when I was not told the results of the one whose results I had came for. He then told me to come for the blood test in a years time. A GP is an important person in my life. My health is their hands. So whatever it is about my health, my doctor has to be truthful no matter how bad. That said, it could be difficult for a doctor to be honest and helpful to their patient when the doctor/patient relationship is unpleasant. I've been a few times with minor ailments, nothing particular interesting or worth a story. An ear infection was about as interesting as it got, of which I needed two or three different appointments to solve. The staff working at the front desk are all very helpful and courteous. It wasn't too much trouble getting an appointment even though the problem wasn't serious, I think it was roughly a week from when I first called. They have a team of doctors and nurses, of varying ages and experience however all the medical staff I dealt with were fantastic. Quick, to the point but certainly not skimming the surface. They are also very good as far as booking and picking up prescriptions without appointment. If you're living in the south Belfast area as a student or a 'Maaalone' resident then you can't go wrong with this well structured, professional practice.

Ormeau Park Surgery has been my port of call for about ten years now when feeling sicky bad. Like…read moremost people who register with doctors' surgeries, this was the closest one to my house and I didn't have any particular reason or recommendation for going there. It's the NHS, you're not going to get a vastly different service by going to the surgery further down the road instead. I've been pretty happy with the level of care here, having gone there for everything from basic antibiotic prescriptions to check ups to managing longer-term sicky badnesses. My doctor is generally Dr Cheyne, and I saw Dr Dean for a bit too who has now retired. Both have been very professional and helpful, and I never felt rushed when going there as can happen with some doctors. Dr Cheyne is always going on at me to give up smoking, but no-one's perfect, even doctors. Where I'd really recommend this clinic is for the exams nurse who does smear tests and general checkups for us ladies. As most women and indeed a lot of men will know, this is often the source of squealed embarrassment stories shared among a group of girls on a night out after the seventh or so cocktail. No need for embarassment here - the nurse is truly lovely and even the most reticent should find this a relatively easy experience. Apologies for the tmi, anyone who's eating dinner while reading this, but well, she really is that good so if there's anyone out there a bit squeamish about the whole thing, do register here. My social duty/elderly nagging over for this review, I'll turn to what I don't like about this surgery, which is the waiting time to get through. Often getting to speak to a receptionist means over an hour or even two ringing back every few minutes, which is not good when you have tonsilitis and are feeling like crap. One receptionist in particular really seems to think it's her job to prevent any patients bothering the doctors - she told me once when I had to get injuries documented that I could just tell the doctor about them over the phone rather than coming in to be examined. That would have gone down well with the compensation lot - 'Yes, I've got, em, three, no two, broken legs, and a broken arm, and I keep lapsing into unconsciousn...' The surgery recently did a major survey about this and the results are up in the waiting room, so hopefully things should improve soonish. Dratted NHS. No one likes going to the doctor, so if you have to go it may as well be as best an experience as you can manage, and that is what you get here. Appointments are easy enough to get and all staff, from reception to nurses and all the doctors are so nice. While doctors are constantly under pressure to see as many patients as possible under crippling time restraints, you never feel rushed, you are never just handed a prescription and sent on your way and you are listened to. Any time I have attended I have felt understood and respected and felt better! I hope you don't need a doctor, but if you do these guys have it all in healthy spades.
