But the whole experience was unprofessional and ultimately unhelpful when it came to doing our actual taxes. First, I didn't hear anything from them for a couple of weeks after our initial meeting. It required me following up to get an update. And then I had specifically asked for a heads up on whether we were likely to owe any taxes, since we were self-employed the past year and unclear whether we were paying sufficient estimated taxes. In the end, I got a response a couple of days before taxes were due to be filed with a report that we $12K in taxes. There was a potential to open an IRA to lowering our tax liability but with no guidance on how to do that and only 2 days to spare we just paid the bill. I would not recommend working with these folks. They seem like nice enough people but were either overwhelmed this tax season or understaffed. Either way, that exactly what you count on a tax account to be prepared for and they clearly failed.

Note: In prior years I used Turbo Tax, but as my taxes have gotten more complicated over the years, I had less confidence that I was doing them correctly via TT, so I felt a lot better working with a real person at B&A. If you're willing to pay a few hundred bucks to have your taxes done right, B&A is the way to go in the Arlington/Alexandria area.

They are detail-oriented, fast and friendly. I have complete confidence that we're getting the best advice on tax savings. I've never been disappointed in the refunds that we've received under Wendroff's care (in fact I know that they've saved us a lot of money, because we've had not so good CPAs in the past!), but I also have found the firm to be reassuringly conservative in its interpretation of the tax code. More than anything else, Jay and I have come to consider Brian a part of the family. He's been enormously generous with his time, and has given us boundless advice on organizing our accounting, setting up payroll, maximizing tax savings, and the like. He's also bent over backwards time and again when we've been under the gun. We're buying a house on short notice and had to ask him to write a letter to our mortgage broker at 9pm last night - on a Sunday evening - and he was on the phone with us at 9am this Monday morning getting it done. Our broker had the letter in hand by noon. That sort of support is really incredible and so hard to find. I really cannot recommend this firm more highly! However this past year he dodged my emails/phone calls, my husband's emails/phone calls, and my elderly mother's emails/phone calls (we all file separately). He once picked up the phone and then pretended to be someone else when he realized I was calling for an update on my taxes. He lied to us about filing for an extension and took forms from my mother that he never returned. Ultimately he stopped replying entirely and we had to look for a new accountant, several months after the filing deadline. I just got a notice that I owe several thousand dollars in late filing fees because it turns out he also lied about getting an extension. I don't know what is going on and while I wish Steven no ill will, please do not work with this firm or him. I don't want this to happen to anyone else.

I ended up having to hire another accountant to fix the problem and never was compensated by Gary or small business advisors. Please be wary of using them.
