Man, I am so glad I find my man Fuzzy Nate. I swear, I had been to a half dozen barbershops before I found this shop. First off, Nate is a cool dude and he has a wealth of information and can chat with the best of them. He actually helped me find a restaurant in Utah that serves fresh fish!! Second, Nate made it clear that we were not going down the old path, with guards and scraping up my head and neck by switching from one guard to the next to the next. He was going free hand and I thought, okay bro; I'm game. I've been to Fuzzy Nate about 6 times since I first found this spot and I have found my new barber. Well, for the next month or so, until I move to the East Coast to try to find myself. I explained to him that his prices were too low and that he could make a killing if he raised the rates. Humbly, he explained that his business plan is about providing a service to the regular guys, who work hard for a living and may not have an endless amount of cash. He said he's making a good living doing things his way and being someone else is not in the cards. That conversation really hit me and was a profound statement, considering where we are as a country in 2020. It's a shop that gives okay cuts. It's also a shop heavy in racism and lacking of taste. Owner "Fuzzy Nate" was telling a story in which he was repeating what a friend said that included the N-word with a hard "r". Nate felt he was justified in using the N-word in this context because he was just repeating what another friend said. I disagreed. Another barber felt comfortable saying I have digestive issues because I'm native. He felt justified because one of his best friends is native. I disagreed with this also. I'm having mixed feelings as I'm writing this. My child used to go to Jason for many months. Jason and Nate were both very welcoming, Jason gave great haircuts and my child genuinely liked talking to him during his haircuts. Now comes the uncomfortable part - after going there for several months, last time I went, the tip amount automatically changed to 25% as the minimum amount! It's hard for me to believe this is the setting for everyone. It sure wasn't the previous 5+ time I've gone. I've always tipped Jason 20%. Sure, I could've said something but it was the principle. I've only had 2 barbers in my life, my Pre-School teacher when I was growing up and a nice lady at the Sports Clips while I was in college. No offense at all to my Pre-School teacher, but Nate provides both the best experience and haircut I could have ever asked for.
