O'neal's Country Buffet - Fish fry at the buffet on a Saturday night.

O'neal's Country Buffet

I was driving through Madison around lunchtime. I saw several restaurants. This was the only one…read morecompletely surrounded by vehicles. They were even parking across the street. So I had to check it out. There are three separate seating areas. Plenty of tables and booths. It's like a lot of other buffets: you seat yourself and serve yourself everything except your drink. You pay at the register when you leave ($15). You can get food to go as well and they will weigh your container. The buffet itself is pretty small but has everything you'd want: grilled chicken, fried chicken, fish, chicken dumplings, mashed potatoes, beans, corn bread, etc. There is a separate salad buffet and dessert buffet. Service was friendly and efficient. Paying was quick and easy. Bathrooms were clean. And did I mention the fried chicken was perfect and the cobbler outstanding?

I don't know exactly how long O'Neal's has been around but I'd say a mighty long time. The building…read moreis plenty worn around the edges, booths have certainly seen better days, but country humor and hospitality abound. They sell seasonal produce from behind the front counter as well. Everyone is super-nice though you won't normally need much interaction with the waitstaff: you just say what you want to drink, they bring it to you, and you go get your buffet. I don't know if there is also a kitchen menu to order or not, but everyone goes for the buffet--that's clear. The menu changes daily and is written very neatly up on a small chalk board in the front however it's going to be country cookin' at it finest regardless. Saturday night is apparently the fish fry: they had a variety of fried seafood plus a shrimp scampi and fried chicken--also ribs I believe. They apparently always have fried chicken and it's very good fried chicken, too--not the very best I've ever had, but quite good. Of what they had on Saturday night that was good--beyond the fried chicken--I'm a fan of the mac'n'cheese (very good), butter beans, fried mullet (local I would bet, tasted very fresh), coleslaw, and hush puppies. The fried shrimp and shrimp scampi on the other hand seemed to be from frozen and not very good, overcooked. Crayfish were ok. Sweet potato casserole was bland--I've had much better. They fixed four or five cobblers and those I tried were pretty good--apple, peach, and a bread pudding-like one with blueberries. It's not quite five-star but it's an experience at a good price and overall good food. I'd be curious to try the lunch buffet--I kind of felt they were just trying too hard at the Saturday dinner and had a bit too much out to have quality the highest across the board. Still for $17 including your drink you cannot beat an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring very good fried chicken and the other fixin's plus fried mullet--I mean, forget all the other main dishes, that's plenty and a deal at that price. Certainly worth checking out if in Madison.

We made our way to the front counter and got on the list. Figured we would be in for a long wait, but our total time from putting our name on the list to being seated was under 10 minutes. It was a buffet style restaurant so the waitress got our drink order and invited us to help ourself to the buffet. The food was overall very good for everything I tried. They had 5 buffet bars set up 1 salad bar, one meats/mains, 1 veggie, 1 split veggie & warm desserts and a cold desert bar. The standout foods I tried were the fried chicken, fried catfish, and fried shrimp. I tried the catfish without many expectations since it was a buffet and not a huge catfish fan, it was one of the cleanest tasting catfish I have ever put in my mouth. The fried chicken was delicious as well. We weee totally impressed with the building, speed of service and the great food. My wife who hates most buffets even looked at me and said she would come back to this buffet anytime.

When we pulled into the parking lot only 1 hr after opening it was packed!! went in put my name on the list less the 15 mins we were seated and greeted! They have specials which change daily , today they had pork chops added to the buffet.Salad bar was amazing .And the chicken they have both baked and fried. Shrimp wasnt over breaded, matter of fact all the fried foods were perfectly seasoned and lightly breaded. The waitresses were all very friendly and came by and checked on us regularly, and refilled our sweet tea. Even the dessert bar was amazing , peanut butter cookies were so soft and my favorite. I only wish i took more pictures of food, next time!! It is only about an hour from Gainesville, nice relaxing drive and worth it!!

They had a large section dedicated to fried chicken and it was awesome. The price was also one of the better deals I have ever seen in 2026. A very southern and homey interior provides for a very interesting eating experience. But the food to price ratio is out of this world. Good job Kacey

I had the temerity to ask for silverware and she snapped at me that she had already put the silverware on the table. When I went back to the table, my dinner mate had a single fork. I went back to the front to ask again. She snapped again that she had already put the silverware on the table. I explained that we only had one fork for two people and she stormed off. When I got back to the table, she was audibly slamming down the water and finally provided a second fork. I kind of wish she hadn't as the food deserved to go straight in the trash. When we got back in the car, we searched until we found some mints, so we could put all memory of this place behind us.

We were warned that there were only 2 wait staff on at the time, and to be patient. To that, our waitress had the sweetest southern accent, her name started with an M, she was amazing. She handled her section, yes we waited but had no real complaints. The prices were a bit out of line with the food offerings. I paid $25.99 for some tender, juicy shrimp and $29.99 for a plate of "fried scallop" all were the size of a nickle and tasted like punched ray wing. I iver heard another customer state that they would like more chicken in their Chicken Alfredo, as the serving they got, 4 peices was ridiculous for the price they charge.

A very entertaining, true Florida, off the beaten path experience. While the restaurant is not the best in the world, it's pretty good and the only option on a Tuesday night that we could find. The place was crowded and we were taken care of with the right level of attention. We stayed in the newly remodeled first floor of one of the buildings. There's still lots of cleanup and re-building to do. It's a little sad to see Steinhatchee suffer so much. But glad to see folks trying to make a go of life again.
