What a gem! Funk House was exactly the kind of place that makes you want to chill outside while eating and relaxing after 600 steps up and down the cathedral. Everything we tried was absolutely delicious--the cheeses were rich in the Croque Monsieur and flavorful, they were silky and comforting, and every bite tasted like someone in the kitchen genuinely cared. The service was just as wonderful; our server was warm, attentive, cute AF and made us feel right at home. The outdoor seating was perfect for people-watching, which, let's be honest, These German guys are super handsome. Köln did not disappoint... I don't know what they're putting in the water here, but Germans really do make strolling down the street look like a model show. Anyways, whatever you do, save room for the chocolate soufflé. What a pleasant surprise! Given the restaurant's location in a bustling tourist area (next to the Cathedral) we weren't expecting much, but our meals completely exceeded expectations. The standout dish was the duck breast. My wife had the chicken with curry sauce, garbanzo beans and pumpkin. The servings are hefty and enough for two people. Also, the food was absolutely delicious! My friend and I were meandering around Cologne to find a place to grab dinner when we happened upon Funkhaus. A very nice storefront, to be sure! They still had their breakfast menus on display out front, but they had dinner menus inside. I ordered the Kalbsragout which is described as "braised veal cubes in cream / fried mushrooms / green asparagus / tagliatelle". Yep! It was exactly that, and it was DELICIOUS! Washed it down with an amazing Whiskey Sour and a red wine. Dessert, I think, was a Cappuccino. [A Word on Cappuccinos: Apparently, cappuccino is a breakfast drink. This is the first I ever heard of that. But the waiter succumbed to my request and got me one anyway.] All-in-all an excellent find, and I'm definitely coming back here again to get more of that sweet sweet Kalbsragout! read more

My daughter and I visited cologne from the US (we are Asian) and she researched to have lunch at this restaurant. We walked in asking for table for 2 and the 1st lady server just replied "seat anywhere" and left. So we found a seat towards the end of the restaurant. This place is very popular and busy. When the 2nd lady server started speaking to us in German, we asked if she speaks English. She replied rudely "NO!" and gestured us to look at menu and walked away! So we had to point at the items on the menu to communicate with her. We ordered the lentil soup and the truffle pasta which turned out great. Upon paying my bill, the same lady who claimed she couldn't speak English suddenly asked if I want to tip her 5% or 10%.. in English (no option for no tip. I'm not sure if it's because we were paying by credit card because I didn't see her asking anyone for tip. This was our 4th day in Amsterdam and Germany and no restaurant has asked us for tip! Do you ever wander into a place based on the fact you just want to get out of the cold and all of sudden you realize you are in heaven? Well the minute we set foot inside the door of Funk-house we knew we were in for a great treat. It was breakfast time and this place was hopping. During our recent trip to Germany we stopped over in Cologne. We stepped out of the central railway station (Koln Hauptbahnhof), and bam! The Cathedral was right there, in all its glory. And just a block or two away, we found Funkhaus Café. This recently renovated stylish café offers a variety of salads, sandwiches, and classic dishes along with cakes and pastries. Dora here. Back to Ernie...Since I had a large lunch, for dinner I ordered Lentil Soup with smoked duck breast. Outstanding, with the lentil being cooked just enough to have a little bite but not mushy, and the thinly sliced duck breast was tender, tasty, and the perfect accompaniment to the soup. They cook the meats and veggies just right, and everything is very delicate but not very expensive, at least compared to the rest of Europe. The unfiltered apple juice was amazing. This place is terrible on all levels. Tourist trap. Drinks are watered down and over priced. Order Amaretto or any drink and they will give you a tiny shot and charge qty 2 or 3 or 4. Most of the reviews are for food, but I can only comment from a drinks perspective. This is a suave, modern and cool place for a few drinks. I would go as far as to say this is my favourite bar that I found. I guess if I was to describe it, it's more wine bar the pub. That for me was a refreshing change from the huge German beer halls. The staff were exceptionally friendly, always right on hand to drop another kolsh in front of you. Bright and fresh with plenty of room and a big selection of drinks. Great place for a few beers out of the cold. Will defo be back when I return to Cologne for a fourth visit. read more

We stopped here for breakfast after reading the reviews on Yelp. We had scrambled eggs and shared a bread and butter plate. The eggs were so delicious and fluffy, and the scallions mixed in them gave them a great flavor. The coffee here was just amazing. We also ate lunch here a couple days later and I had a Irish beef sandwich. The beef was incredibly tender and melted in your mouth and I must say it was one of the most delicious sandwiches I have ever had. I also had an apple strudel for dessert after lunch and it blew my mind. I am not making that statement lightly. Nice place, very close to the station. Love the decor, it feels like you've stepped into a 1970s dance hall! Only instead of dancers you have people eating tasty food. Well worth a visit, I had the currywurst which was delicious and filling - and very cheap. I wasn't too hungry so went for the smaller option. This was washed down with a few Kolschs, of course. My girlfriend had the chicken salad, which was massive and delicious. The grilled chicken was some of the best we have ever tasted, it tasted extremely fresh and tender. For dessert we had the apple strudel, which again was fantastic - it came bathing in a vanilla custard, which also tasted great. We combined a Funkhaus frühstück with scrambled eggs and bacon and yoghurt with fruit, the perfect combo for 2. Everything was fresh and the scrambled eggs had some green in it, nice! The jam came in small edible (though not very yummy) cups, nice eco gesture. Finally the hot chocolate was perfect. It's located in a very convenient spot that's close to the train station. And it has better hours than most of the other restaurants we passed. The service was awesome and the food was great.
