Specialties
At the foot of the legendary Stelvio Ski Run in Bormio, Italian Alps,
Funivia Bormio Active Hotel is a four-star alpine retreat run by the
same family for four generations since 1956.
Designed for travelers who come to the mountains to be active, the
hotel offers 37 rooms and suites, a wellness area with indoor pool
and spa, a fully equipped bike room, in-house restaurant, ski
storage, and direct access to slopes in winter.
Cyclists know us as a base camp for the great alpine passes — Stelvio,
Gavia, and Mortirolo — all within riding distance. Skiers stay just
steps from the gondola lifts and the World Cup Stelvio Ski Run,
which hosts alpine skiing events at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic
Games.
Renovated in 2025, the hotel combines the warmth of an alpine family
business with the comfort and amenities of a contemporary four-star
property.
Adults Only.
History
Established in 1956.
The hotel was founded in 1956 by Pierino and Rita Bonacorsi, who
opened a 7-room guesthouse in Bormio at the time the Vallecetta
cable car began operating, betting on the area's tourism future.
In the late 1970s their son Guido took over and expanded the
property with a swimming pool, tennis court, and new dining areas,
hosting the Swiss national team during the 1985 World Alpine Ski
Championships.
In 2001, Elisa Bonacorsi (former competitive skier) and her husband
Daniele Schena brought the third generation into the business and
pioneered the hotel's identity as a destination for high-altitude
cycling, building strong international ties — particularly with
Australia.
A major renovation in 2025 added new suites and a contemporary
wellness area. Today the fourth generation of the family is
gradually joining the management, ahead of the hotel's 70th
anniversary and the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Games.
Meet the Business Owner: Elisa B.
Elisa grew up in this hotel — her grandparents Pierino and Rita
Bonacorsi opened it in 1956, betting on Bormio's tourism future.
A former competitive alpine skier, Elisa raced internationally
before returning to Bormio in 2001 to take over the family
business with her husband Daniele Schena, known to the cycling
community as "Stelvioman" for his rides up the Stelvio Pass.
Together they pioneered the hotel's identity as a destination for
cycling tourists, building relationships with riders from across
Europe and Australia. Elisa has also served as president of Bormio Marketing, contributing to the development of tourism in the Valtellina region.
Today, with the fourth generation joining the team, Elisa is
preparing the hotel for its 70th anniversary alongside the
Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Games hosted on the Stelvio Ski Run.
