Living in Hillcrest has so many components that make it a terrific place to live, and one of the…read moreforemost among them is having Prime Fitness just around the corner from my house. Conveniently located on First Street and accessible 24 hours, the gym is clean and well-maintained. Occupying the entire ground floor of a building, it has a feeling of spaciousness about it. Doors that open to the small patio area, along with ceiling fans, enable good air circulation throughout the space. Fellow gym-goers are friendly and always willing to engage when you approach them about routines or exercises. No attitude at this place whatsoever. People are genuinely happy to share their successes and reflections on their own self-journeys to fitness, which makes the gym feel like not only a place the place where you can go to work out, but also a place where you can continually learn from other gym enthusiasts about ways to improve your own focus on physical improvement. A sense of a community among people with a common interest in health and fitness, and a willingness to share it, are two of of the most unique and notable characteristics of this gym. The owner, Keith Deidrich, pays meticulous attention to the gym's layout and functionality, resulting in a nice rotation of machines and weights throughout the space. It's exciting to come in to find a new machine, such as the very impressive cable crossover set up, complete with high bars for dead-hangs and pull-ups, or a one-of-a-kind lat pull-over machine that requires the force of your elbows, placed on pads and pushing down, to accomplish the exercise. It's like a squat machine for the upper body. In addition to the machines and freeweights, the gym has add-on weight blocks in gradations of two-and-a-half pounds that are custom-made to be inserted on top of the machine pulley racks to increase the resistance in smaller increments when the built-in 10- or 15-pound increases are too much of a step-up. Being able to use these blocks has enabled me to slowly increase the amount I'm lifting without making a jump up to a higher weight that is just too heavy. And there are plenty of cardio machines as well. In short, this neighborhood-centered gym with its relaxed vibe, excellent equipment, and friendly and respectful members makes working out a highlight of my daily schedule.

It takes a lot to impress me, and Coach Malcolm genuinely did. I walked into Anytime Fitness in University Heights expecting a workout. I walked out feeling like I had found someone who actually understands how to coach people, not just train them. He has an incredible ability to read the person in front of him, adjust in real time, and push without ever making you feel discouraged. The knowledge is obvious, but what stayed with me was how present he was. Every correction had a purpose. Every conversation mattered. I left feeling stronger, more confident, and excited to come back. Coach Malcolm is the kind of coach people hope they'll find and rarely do. I'm incredibly grateful for the experience.

The members will glare at you with daggers for eyes or give you really dirty looks and be somewhat passive aggressive if you're any type of visibly gay , androgynous , or a TS person. It's like people here try to make you uncomfortable as possible when you're just trying to work out... jeeze. You'd think there was a sign up saying " No f%#gs or Tr*^%ys". Both the blonde haired young man and good looking trainer with the beard and shaggy hair who work here obviously never got a lesson in manners from their parents because staring people down is quite aggressive and rude. The custodian also needs to stop letting homeless people in to charge their phones or shower. I came here late one night and had a man follow me out to watch me get into my truck before taking pictures of me when I left. The manager is pleasant though and I see her walk the floor with new people or to improve the lay out so she cares about doing her job. If you're LGBT though I'd try to avoid this location and go to Rosecrans or Tierrasanta. Also the hot water takes 5 minutes to turn on when showering. Ugh.

No, it isn't full of body builders, but it's meant for those serious on getting fit and or losing weight. Some of the equipment is rusty or has seen better days, but it works, and that's all that matters. They have everything you need as far as machines and free weights. I know that they have some personal trainers that work here (I don't think they actually work for the Lab) and they are always working with a client helping them on form and workouts. I personally work with Big Mike (Michael Williams) and the guy is amazing at helping you reach your goals. They were VERY accommodating. And instead of trying to make things difficult, they worked with us so we could do what we were there to do... workout and leave. First time we came around 11am on a Tuesday and it was super packed. They have a whole parking garage next to the gym and we had to park on the roof. The next time we went around almost 8pm and it was a LOT better, way less crowded. ---- There are multiple sections of the gym and with 2 indoor sections and a large outside section. I like the outside for better air flow. I'm short at only 5 feet tall so some of the machines do not accommodate my height for the full range of motion, like the hip abduction machine. ---- Overall: it's a pretty great gym, huge facility, my issues are that it gets reallyyyy crowded, and that not all of the machines allow for a full rom if you're shorter

The gym is huge to start so it is almost guaranteed that the machine you want will be available, even during peak hours. Stark pockets everywhere. Small floor. Turf the size of a welcome mat. Four benches for the entire building. You will wait. You will get asked about your bench or someone might casually try to move in on your space. The plates themselves aren't the problem. GP free weights feel heavy and real. Everything around them feels like it hasn't been cleaned since the ribbon cutting. No paper towels in the locker room. No soap in the showers. Dudes literally using the hand soap dispensers to get soap to take into the showers. Water pressure from the last decade. Toilet stalls full all morning like it's a bus station. People stare with no sport and no shame. After I rinsed, my slippers were decorated with pubic hair that did not clock in with me (see photo). No housekeepers anywhere in sight. Juice bar. Blow dryers. None of that makes a gym. Thanks to the Leads for their professionalism getting me in with ease but the comfort ends with the greeting. I hated being there so I trained hard and then couldn't wait to get out. Trial day one was the whole experiment. Dirty like EoS, smaller, darker, and proud of it. Do not recommend. I will not be back.

This gym offers a wide variety of bootcamp like classes with fantastic energy and some truly talented coaches. While there are a few who are overly egotistical and could use a come back to earth reality check and a touch more humility, the majority of the coaching staff is excellent. Two standouts are Gabrielle Y. and Christian Q., who make working out an absolute pleasure. Gabrielle's welcoming demeanor and contagious positivity create a great atmosphere, and Christian's coaching style is equally motivating and supportive. The classes themselves are high-energy, challenging, and adaptable to different fitness levels. What I love most is that each coach brings their unique style and energy to the table. Once you find the coach who resonate with you, it's easy to stick with them and stay consistent. The variety keeps things interesting, and you'll never get bored while working toward your fitness goals. One of the challenges, however, is parking. Since Lazy Acres put up signs claiming what feels like half the lot, finding a spot can be a headache. I've learned not to arrive too early because spots typically free up only once the previous class ends. While it can be frustrating to circle the lot, a little patience and timing go a long way. It's something to keep in mind when planning your visits. The gym itself could benefit from more regular cleaning and maintenance. A deep cleaning is definitely overdue, as dust, hair, and even cobwebs can be seen in corners. Some benches are rusty and could use replacing. While these issues don't take away from the quality of the workouts, they do detract from the overall experience. Many other gyms in the area have weekly professional cleaning services, which could be a great addition here to help maintain a fresher, more polished environment. Despite these minor drawbacks, Renegade remains a fantastic place to work out. The membership is reasonably priced, although ClassPass is still more affordable and offers lower price penalties for late cancellations. Overall, the quality of the classes and the dedication of standout coaches like Gabrielle and Christian make this gym worth checking out. If you're looking for a challenging yet welcoming environment to achieve your fitness goals, Renegade is a solid choice--just plan ahead for parking and connect with the coaches whose energy aligns with yours!
