During a child's birthday party today, a mother who uses a wheelchair was told by staff that mobility devices are not permitted inside the play area, comparing her wheelchair to a stroller. After moving through the facility without incident earlier in the day, she was suddenly stopped and told she could not enter. She asked to speak with management. Dana came out and told the mother that this was true and that corporate policy states that wheelchairs are not allowed in the play area. When the mother pushed back on this policy as a violation of human rights (which it is), the manager (Dana) told the mother that she was allowed in but that her wheelchair wasn't allowed. After more discussion the manager let her know she could only re-enter to collect her child after wiping down her wheels. When she asked for assistance due to her disability, the manager responded, "We aren't your maids," and escalated the situation by claiming she (the manager) was being discriminated against as an Asian Canadian. Multiple witnesses confirmed the exchange, and the manager later reiterated the claim, describing it as a corporate policy to bar wheelchairs from the facility--even for parents supervising children. This is a clear violation of basic principles of accessibility and human rights law in Alberta and Canada more broadly. I encouraged the mother to report this to the Human Rights Commission of Alberta (and provided her resources). I hope that an investigation follows
