There are so many beautiful nature walks throughout Greater Portland, that I'm trying my hardest to get to all of them. Recently I spent some time checking out Fuller Farm in Scarborough - "180 acres of fields, woodlands, and Nonesuch River frontage permanently protected by the Scarborough Land Conservation Trust" (according to the sign that greets you when you arrive). There's a dirt parking lot and a kiosk when you first get there, and behind it?
The most stunning, sweeping field with a single large tree. It's so magnificent it almost looks fake (actually we thought it looked a bit like an old Windows wallpaper!). Take a moment to take it in. Sometimes in Maine we get so caught up with coastal or mountain views we forget that wide open spaces like this are, in their own right, just as breathtaking.
Behind the field is where the 2.5+ mile trail system leads you into the woods. This is where things got a bit disappointing for us. We came here specifically because we saw that there was a waterfall and a scenic brook. I'm not sure if this is an early spring thing (like immediately after the snow melts), but there was no water falling down rocks of any kind... it seemed completely dried up (we haven't had an especially dry summer either, so we assumed there'd be at least something). The brook was also more or less a murky stream. It was still a lovely walk through the woods, the bridges were fun to explore, but it wasn't what we were expecting.
I would say, if you love snowshoeing, cross country skiing, or bird watching... this is probably the trail for you. I can see it being perfect for those things. As a person who loves nature walks with scenic views, points of interest, water sources, etc, I wouldn't necessarily say this was one of my favorites, but I'm happy to have walked through it at least once! read more
