My sketch of the Portland Head Lighthouse
Elizabeth S.

The Portland Head Lighthouse is loved by all. Visitors hike, picnic, walk, photograph, paint and just enjoy this iconic beacon. It is free to explore the grounds. There is plenty of free parking (I came on a Tuesday in mid August) and there are remnants of war bunkers and artifacts that can be explored. The gift shop is next to the lighthouse. There are restrooms, outhouses and a few food trucks.

A must while visiting the Portland area. Located within Fort Williams Park about 20 minutes south of Downtown Portland. Lots of amazing views of the lighthouse and the Atlantic Ocean throughout the various path/walkways. Both views from the North and South along the coastline are great. The Museum and gift shop are open from Memorial to Columbus Days, 10am - 4pm. The Museum fees are $2 for adults and $1 for children. Children under 6 are free. There are a few large parking lots throughout the park...pay at the meter via credit card or Passport Parking App. There were lots of spaces available during out weekday visit in late August...but it was around 5pm-ish...so the museum and gift shop were already closed. I suspect the parking lots would be more crowded earlier in the day. There are public restrooms as well as a Bite Into Maine Food Truck there at the park. There are no fees (other than parking) to access the park itself.

What a beautiful landmark! As someone who loves lighthouses, I saw many videos about needing to come here, so we did! There are two food trucks parked onsite for food options (expect a decently long line at peak meal times). Admission: free Parking: pay by time Views: priceless

This light house park is so beautiful, with stunning view of the coast line shore and the wonderful tall standing tower right next to the cute tiny house. The park has two parking spots further from the lighthouse. The lot in front of it barely has 3-4 spots. It's about 4-5 minutes walk from those far ones. The lighthouse area is super clean. There's a museum that has a small entry fee. There's a gift shop as well. There are many historical signage around the place, as well as a shipwreck spot in the shore's stones. Both sides of the lighthouse are great spots for taking photos.

A stunning lighthouse ! There was plenty of parking for a fee. The park has beautiful views of the water, cliffs and lighthouse. The grounds are well maintained and the walkway offers breathtaking views and plenty of photo ops ! There is a museum with a small entrance fee. Highly recommend.

Popular tourist spot at the area. Tons of visitors. You can head up to the tower with entrance fee. We didn't go up. Nice view even just from the cliff. It was windy and cold the day we visited so did not stay too long. There's a souvenir store to browse. Portable potty on site.

This is pretty cool place to visit while in Portland. We had good weather during our visit. Tons of good views and they have a food truck Bite of Maine there, which I highly recommend getting you a darn good lobster roll.

On Mother's Day Sunday, Tony Vanoy Noël Teel Calliope & I visited the Head Lighthouse located in Fort Williams Park in Portland Maine It was free to enjoy the Lighthouse itself is closed to the public. Season doesn't begin until Memorial Day! Because of my handicap plaquard we didn't have to pay fee for parking! We strolled the baby around the park, the cliffs and rock overlooks & the Lighthouse! It was extremely windy & cold! But even still it was a lovely sunny day! Lisa Diane Boyce-Vanoy Dale Lisa Vanoy #newengland25trip

Portland Head Light is one of the most picturesque lighthouses we have ever visited. Stunning from afar and closeup. It is perched on rocky cliff that stretch on as far as you can see with islands and another lighthouse dotting the view over the water. Boats and ships of all kinds sail by constantly in what is a very busy shipping channel. The waves crash against jagged rocks and the rocky beach below (no access to the beaches from the landmark). There is a small gift shop and museum very close to the lighthouse. There are cliff walks in both directions and a park which surrounds the area. This is a place to be enjoyed and not to be missed.

The Portland Head Light is probably, at least in my humble opinion, the most iconic lighthouse in the United States. It is located in the Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth. The Park and Lighthouse are open daily from sun up to sundown. There is also a museum attached to the light tower and even a gift shop. The Park, Head Light, and the Ocean are beautiful and this place should be a place you visit when you come to the area.

Light the Good Fight Lighthouse located at gorgeous Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The Good: *Completed in 1791, it's the oldest lighthouse in the state of Maine and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. *On a clear day you can see FOUR other lighthouses (Spring Point Ledge, Ram Island Ledge, Halfway Rock Light, & Cape Elizabeth Light). *Seasonal (May - Oct) Museum $2/admission *Seasonal (May - Oct) gift shop *Leashed dogs ok *Large paved parking lot *Four food vendors located on the premises, including Cousins Maine Lobster. The Meh: *Park is free to enter but parking is not; $2/hr w/ 2-hr minimum ($10/all-day) The Ugly: *Honestly? Not much other than it can get really busy during certain times of the year. Conclusion: Must-see if you're visiting the Portland, ME area.

On our way up to Maine from Boston we made a stop to visit the Portland head light. I always saw lighthouses growing up on 12-month calendars especially on my mom's desk so it was a little surreal to see something like this in person. This place is as beautiful as it looks at photos. It's very calming peaceful, and the lighthouse itself is beautiful. We got really lucky because we didn't have a hard time parking whatsoever, but I could imagine during peak season that parking could be pretty difficult. I would definitely recommend this place if you're heading to Maine as it's a must see tourist destination here.

Did on go inside the light house no I did not but I got the best pictures here on our Maine coastal adventure. This is why you get up early, lighting was fantastic that day. You can get many different shots of the Portland Head Light House from many different angles. Highly suggest you visit this light house !!!

Ask the Community - Portland Head Light

Can you climb this light house?

You can not climb the lighthouse tower. It is not open to the public.

I know the sign says open from sunrise to sunset. Does that mean we can't get in before the sunrise to watch the sun actually come up?

The gates are locked and closed until sunrise and closed again at sunset. So, no, you can't go into the park and watch the sun rise.

It is 2hr parking minimum at the parking spot closest to the lighthouse, keep that in mind. I went here before June, so the museum and museum shop wasn't open. **November 2025: Saturday Morning Visit**…read more Visiting a lighthouse in Maine was a priority on this trip, so I did a little bit of research and saw that this lighthouse (the Portland Head Lamp) was not only the oldest lighthouse in Maine, but that it was also commissioned by George Washington! It's housed at Fort Williams Park and while we were there for the lighthouse there are other attractions like Fort Williams Museum and Cape Elizabeth History Center there as well. We parked as close as possible to the lighthouse and noticed that that was privately owned. The lowest number of hours you can purchase was 2 hours for $6. Since it was super windy and 30 some degrees we only stayed in the area for 20 mins or so. You can't go inside the lighthouse but you walk right up to it and see the coast. The view from the base of the lighthouse was beautiful and if it wasn't so cold I'd probably stay longer to enjoy the view. Note: They don't have trash cans there. Worth a visit! and maybe next time I'll see some of the other attractions at the park.

A note on that: - A Maine State Parks Pass is $55 for an Individual Season Pass, $105 for a Vehicle Season Pass. It gets you into dozens and dozens and dozens of parks across Maine, and most of those parks only really check passes from maybe the beginning of May to the end of September. - For Scarborough Beach State Park, which is operated in a public/private partnership with Black Point Resource Management LLC, from April 1st to October 1st it costs $7 per person per visit for residents/$9 for non-residents; from October 1st to November 15th it costs $6 per person per visit for residents/$8 for non-residents; it's $105 for an Individual Season Pass, $140 for a Vehicle Season Pass, $155 for a 24-hour Season Pass. So... it's *not* one of the cheaper options for beach access in the state. Is it glorious in the summer? I don't know. But according to the folks who own this beach: "Scarborough Beach offers some of the best swimming in New England with water temperatures in the high 60's throughout July and August." Is it glorious in the off season? Yes, but... The "yes": it's a long, sandy beach with uninterrupted views of the ocean. It makes for exceptional strolling and thinking and taking in blue space! Know that you have to park on the street, and it's a little bit of a walk to the beach itself, but it's so worth it. The "but": this is one of the most dog-walked beaches I've ever been to (and I rarely see them leashed). Every time I visit there is *a lot* of dog waste bags; one time I found 16 bags of dog poop and 2 used diapers. Yikes.

Somehow I got lost off my usual path I take and ended up going on the greater fore river sanctuary trail loop around and across the railroad tracks, but the boardwalks were great! Back to the falls, if you start at the trailhead near Brighton ave, it's less than 0.25 miles of a walk. The falls are made of horsetails of rushing water over large slabs of rock. To me, the Western Prom is the established, composed, unruffled older sister (who's probably quite proper and likes garden parties) to the Eastern Prom. I'd like to think I've got a little West End in me, and it's fun to pretend I belong there when I'm picnicking and watching the planes come in and out of PWM from a distance. I've seen kiddos practicing lacrosse here with their dad, people relaxed under trees reading, friends playing a pick-up game of bocce while drinking something out of red solo cups. There used to be more events held here (... the legendary Halloween parade is not to be missed); so hopefully those concerts and outings begin to happen again!
