I've driven past this place almost daily and today we decided to stop by and have dinner here. The staff is welcoming and attentive. We were surprised to see both Japanese and Chinese cuisine menus. When our server asked us which menus we wanted to order from, we picked both - just because we wanted to see what kind of food they have. We ordered: 3 Ko Ramen Pork Tonkatsu Five Cracker Roll Agedashi Tofu Garlic Edamame Fresh Salmon Nigiri We are very surprised by how big the portions are. We ordered a lot of food thinking about the other Japanese restaurants we have been to - they have pretty small portions. Not here! The portions are huge! I brought both my boys in their early 20s with me. These two can eat more than I have ever seen anyone eat, and we still couldn't finish everything. We had a lot of leftovers. All the food was wonderful. The Ko ramen is amazing!!! All our food was so fresh and tasted really good. The outside of the building is deceptively small-looking. The place has a lot of seating inside and has a party room as well. Despite the number of diners around us, it didn't sound loud at all, in fact we were able to speak in a very normal indoor volume and we could hear each other perfectly. We found ample parking in the back of the building. No parking fees/meters. Next time we will try the Chinese food too. For now, the Japanese food i would definitely recommend. Will update review after we try the Chinese food. Their prices are really good! They also have a discounted menu of 4 different offerings for students M-F I believe 12pm to 2pm. Pros: The combo tempura was piping hot and just *perfect*, with a fun assortment of veggies (crunchy green bean? almost creamy Japanese eggplant? Super cool.) I honestly haven't stopped thinking about it. The chow mein was also piping hot and extremely fragrant of garlic as the plate was set in front of me. I haven't stopped thinking of that succulent steam facial, either. I also had a root beer. Life should always be perfect tempura and your favorite soda. The service was great as well. They replied with a genuine "enjoy" to each of my "thank-you's", and also spoke very kindly and gave great service to the considerably under-spoken guy at the booth next to mine. Con: The place is old as dirt and needs to be gutted. I don't think it was 'sticky' tablecloth dirty, but I was pleasantly surprised that the bathroom was very clean and tidied. The smell when I entered the restaurant quickly let me know that something was wrong with the sewer lines, or something. Like, I almost left before anyone saw me stroll into the empty place, ok? There was a gal who was walking in to scope the place out for she and her friends as I was leaving. She didn't stay. I was waiting for an Uber as she hightailed it back to her car declaring "Well, I guess I haven't been there in a while..." into her phone. Overall, I'm glad I stayed to give an old place a new try for the first time in... 15 years? Not surprised that all of the orders were being picked up by DoorDash, etc, but also not surprised at how many orders were being pickup up, one after another. I need tempura and rooty beer this week. Not sure if I'd ever be brave enough to give their sushi menu a try, though. read more

Not having read the reviews, we were surprised by the "Japanese or Chinese menu" question, and really thought we were being given menus written in Japanese, fair enough since we were there for Japanese. We went because we felt bad we let the neighborhood Chinese restaurant go out of business by not eating there enough but here it still is, hidden. Had Japanese anyway. They have happy hour until 5:30 so we tried the garlic edamame, so good. The kabocha kimchi ramen was really tasty, not too thick from the coconut and just salty enough. The sushi was really fresh, and the pieces were a good size. Even the miso soup was well-balanced. And the prices were reasonable and the server very sweet. What more could you want? Don't let this neighborhood spot lack for business! read more

Anyone remember that old 70s TV show when Gomer Pile goes, "Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!" No one?!! Well neither did I until I went to Fuji Sushi! So I went because, to be honest, another place was closed. Haha. And then I remembered seeing high ratings for Fuji Sushi, and we were in the area, so we decided to give it a try. What was the big surprise was that we were there for...sushi, obviously. But when we walked in, the host (an older Asian man) asks, "Chinese or Japanese?" I seriously thought he was asking what ethnicity I was! I was so perplexed! Haha When ordering, we asked for recommendations. He named a few Chinese dishes. When we asked "what fresh fish do you have today?" He hesitated and didn't answer. No kidding... we asked 3x. Once he said, "Um, salmon and....." and then walked away. We only asked because the sushi bar had very skimpy pieces of fish in the glass fridge, so we were wondering if they had anything else in the kitchen? Apparently not. We decided to get a couple of the dishes he recommended and threw caution to the wind and ordered a cooked sushi roll (we didn't dare try raw fish since he avoided answering our question about fresh fish!) **What we ordered** Sautéed Stringbeans: 5 stars. Delicious. Authentic Chinese. Fresh, crispy, tasty! Great over rice (ordered separately). It came out first, and this hit the spot! Salt and Pepper Fish: 5 stars. Fried fish was crispy and peppers were spicy. The portion was huge! Love that it was over a bed of shaved cabbage for flavor and texture balance. Lion King Roll: 0 stars. *insert expletive here* I didn't recognize this as a roll or baked roll or any kind of sushi I've ever seen in my life. It looked like it was nuked and then thrown in the oven with some kind of cheesy cream sauce slipping off the top and died on the side, resembling cooked cerebral matter. It was incredibly unappetizing to see coagulated things on a sushi roll! The "salmon" was so overcooked that it was solid grey. HOWEVER, the Chinese food ROCKED! The moral of the review is to listen to the server/host and get what they recommend! If they don't mention the sushi, don't get the sushi! Also note: this is definitely classified as a Cheap Eats place. See photos. Furniture feels reminiscent to an 80s tiki hut that went under. Decor is mostly made up of paper goods visibly adhered with Scotch tape. The place wasn't warm or cozy either; it had a cold, eat-quickly-and-go vibe, probably because so many rooms were closed off with the lights out. Wow delicious and the service was great too! We decided to give Fushi Sushi a try even though we already have a few favorite Sushi spots, and we are so glad we did! The food was absolutely delicious and the portions were very generous, from the garlic edamame, to the miso soup, to the very fresh Sushi rolls. The Uni Sushi roll was an experience to eat and the Sashimi would melt in your mouth! Not to mention the service was super awesome. First timer! I've seen this place a million times driving down Soquel Drive, but I never stopped. I took my daughter for Mother's Day dinner. I had the teriyaki chicken with tempora vegetables. My daughter had sushi. We had saki. Everything was really good. The owner makes his own soy sauce which is much better than bottled. Our server was excellent though the food was slightly slow to come out, but we didn't mind. The ambiance was not much to speak of, and that was not a problem. As it happens, the restaurant also serves Chinese food. Upon arrival, the host will ask which you prefer. I did notice a lot of people were doing take out. The place is clean, including the bathroom. We had a very nice time and I'm a fan boy now. This will be my go to Japanese restaurant. Everything was as it should be. read more

Yuckola. Excited to try out a new restaurant around the corner... sushi in Soquel! But the food was terrible. The agadashi tofu was dry and flavorless fried tofu with no sauce (when we asked for some they just gave us soy sauce). The bowl of edamame was huge but it was undercooked and we couldn't eat it. The sweet potato fries were greasy and floppy. I ordered ramen which was a mistake, it was lukewarm and tasteless. My husband got a sushi roll which he said was okay but not particularly good. We ordered a lot of food and ended up leaving most of it there, it wasn't worth taking home for leftovers. Turns out this is the old mediocre Golden Fu Wah restaurant with the same staff and chefs now masquerading as a sushi bar to capitalize on sushi's popularity. It still smells like sewage in there and everything is dirty. I definitely don't advise eating raw fish in a place like this. read more

We LOVE Fuji Sushi (which is also Golden Fu Wah Restaurant) for so many reasons. First of all, the food is always superb. Part of our family likes Japanese food and part likes Chinese food. Everyone found menu options they could enjoy. The food was cooked perfectly and very flavorful. We love peking duck, and when we called ahead of time and requested it, they were able to prepare it for us and it was FANTASTIC. One thing that is really special about Fuji Sushi is that we feel so welcome and cared for when we are there. We enjoy going there for both regular meals out, and have used their back room for birthday celebrations as well. We'd give 10 starts in this review if we could. read more

This place was fairly new so we didn't know what to expect. At first glance it wasn't the most well kept place but the sushi definitely proved us wrong. We ordered the Santa Cruz roll, Happy Roll, and the omakase. The omakase was not like the picture but still had about 4 types of fish. This is surprisingly the only location in Santa Cruz that had this so we were very excited to try. The fish was very fresh and they even had fresh wasabi and homemade soy sauce to pair with it. The Happy roll came wrapped with cucumber which was hard to eat but still pretty good and refreshing. If you like soft shell crab I would recommend the Santa Cruz roll. Fish was fresh- excellent- beautiful presentation. Soy sauce is home made. We had the Deluxe Sashimi, Dragon Roll and Rainbow roll. it was a cold day, the waitress brought out a pot of green tea for us, noting that we might want to be warmed up. Man where do I even begin. This is the best place in all the land for Chinese food. I drive all the way from San Jose just for this place. For my money you just can't beat 'em. When it was golden fu wah i had given the Chinese food 4 stars. Not sure what changed, or maybe just a bad day, but got #2 dinner ( which i have had 3 times previously, and enjoyed). Rice was dry, and taste of frozen veggies in it. The hot and sour soup was tasty like before, but only half of cup filled. The chicken was really dry. It just feels like the dishes got less sauces. I haven't tried the sushi or Japanese food. read more
