But there is a fun playground set up by the calves which meant we got first dibs on the hay slide! The calves knew visitors meant feeding time and were licking us, just waiting for that wonderful milk bottle to be given to them. Our guide was amazing, taking time to answer every one of our questions thoroughly. She showed us the stalls where the dairy cows feed, relax and stay cool, the water washout that cleans the stalls, the milking stations, and even let us practice our milking skills on a model cow. She explained that the cows are milked every 12 hours so our tour not only fell outside of their normal schedule, but they wouldn't be comfortable having strangers milk them. Which is why we practiced on a model, still very cool. Totally understandable, we want the cows to continue producing their delicious milk for all to enjoy! We learned that raw milk, not pasteurized, is actually better since the vitamins and nature's goodness haven't been heated out. After tasting the raw milk, it tastes SO delicious. They aren't selling commercially anymore and can only sell straight from their farm, so if you happen to want fresh milk, ice cream or other locally made farm foods, visit their store on site! Circle N is a small family owned and operated raw milk dairy. Because Texas prohibits the sale of…read moreraw milk in stores, Circle N exclusively sells their milk and milk products at their on-site shop. There you can purchase raw milk by the pint or gallon (they have chocolate and strawberry too!), as well as dairy like cheese, cream, yogurt, sour cream and ice cream. The store also sells items from other local vendors: things like honey, sausage, and nuts. The milk is fresh, delicious, and very reasonably priced ($5.00 a gallon for white). Coming from California, where stores do sell raw milk but it's like $14 a gallon, I was shocked at the price Circle N was able to offer theirs. I wish we lived closer so I could make it part of my regular weekly shopping! The main attraction for us was the dairy tour, which is offered for $7 a person (under 2 is free). There is no set schedule for tours so you need to contact the dairy in advance to schedule one. The tour was incredibly informative and so much fun! We got to see where they milk the cows and how they flush out the barns. We learned about the silo, how they feed and care for the cows, and even got to give the calves a bottle! The tour ended with a half pint sample of the raw milk (a much more generous portion than I expected!). The only thing I wish we could have seen is a cow actually being milked. I had been on another dairy tour previously where we had the chance to see the mechanical milking and it was really neat, but this was at a much larger dairy, where the milking happened almost constantly throughout the day. At Circle N, the milking only happens twice a day (2:30a and 2:30p), so it makes sense that we weren't able to see it happening. Michelle, the owner and tour guide, was wonderful. She made us feel very welcome and was patient to answer all our questions. We packed a lunch and ate it at the covered picnic tables they leave open to the public. This is an outstanding destination for a homeschool coop, or even just a fun activity for the family. Cash or check only. Bring a cooler - you'll want to take home some of this milk!

I made lots of yogurt and made cultured butter and buttermilk. Yum! It's next to impossible to churn butter from store bought homogenized milk. They also have flavored milk, free range eggs, cream, spices, jams etc. Pay by honor system. Prices are written on the products and on the cooler. Choose your products, write in the log and leave cash or pay through PayPal/venmo. No credit cards. Exit 191 on I-35. You should be able to see a cow atop a tractor and the country store is right next to it in a house.

The anniversary red felt bold and special, while the Chocolate Finale was smooth and sweet, almost like dessert in a glass. We went on a Wednesday, which was perfect since bottles are half off. That deal alone makes midweek feel like a celebration. Our server, Erik, was great -- patient, friendly, and full of good suggestions. He made the whole experience easy and fun. The vibe of the place is relaxed but lively, the kind of spot where you can laugh with friends, sip something memorable, and not feel rushed.

The drive up to the vineyard was great. From the outside, the facilities were appealing and inviting. We selected this establishment due to it having food on the menu on the website that we looked at prior to leaving for the vineyard. Upon being seated, a menu was handed to us with no explanation. When the waitress came back over we asked for the mixed wine flight and 2 flatbreads. She explained to us that the kitchen was closed (the was at 1:30 pm and the waitress never communicated it out when handing us the menus that the kitchen was closed nor did the website mention it) and that the only thing we could get was chips and hummus. Since we were hungry, we asked for the chips and hummus. She came back with our first pours and she added that each pour was 1 oz. which I highly doubt due to it just barely filling up the glass. I asked her how she knew how much she was pouring and she said "I just guess". We did the next pour, then on the third pour she was pouring the last wine on the menu. We explained to her that she skipped the 3rd wine and proceeded to argue with us. She finally brought us the 3rd wine after debate then the fourth. Wine was very good. The table next to us received a charcutier board and then realized she never brought us any chips or hummus. It was at this point we realized, we were not going to get the service that we desired. Given the ingredients included on this super tiny small "pizza" and the exorbitant cost, the profit markup on this menu item has to be HUGE! Since the winery was busy, we heard other disappointed guests try to order charcuterie boards to also be upset that none were to be had on that day. Our sommelier was knowledgeable about all of the wines....and I am assuming was the owner/manager of the vineyard. We opted to buy 6 bottles of wine at a mere savings and had wanted to open one of them to enjoy while we were there. Then, the "catch" came....we had to buy an ADDITIONAL bottle to open while being seated as the "cost savings" offer was only available as a "carry out". Our tasting service was slow and the cost for tastings far exceeds what we are used to given the MANY Texas wineries we have visited. While the ambiance is idyllic and the facility is clean, a business only gets ONE chance to make a good first impression.
