At times it suggests that a concept is overdone or unoriginal, and at other times that familiarity strikes us at a more profound level -- as if we've been there before in a past life, or as if there's something there that feels like home. I was lucky to find this feeling at a stunning café nestled into the greenery of Djurgården in southern Stockholm, a beacon of warmth and light amidst the afternoon chill. My traveling companion and I had spent the morning perusing the vast collections at Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde, finding ourselves enchanted by the glorious staterooms and the expertly curated painting exhibitions. It's a known fact that museums always tend to make me hungry, and so after exploring the grounds I was just about ready for something to nibble on. By this point in my Swedish adventure, fika had become the most cherished hour (or several) of the day. From cardamom buns to princess cake, I had become fully absorbed in this tradition and was fully committed to incorporating it into my life back in the States. While the simplest translation is "a coffee break," for my traveling companion and I had had become so much more -- an invitation to unwind, to take refuge from the Swedish cold, and perhaps most importantly, to indulge a little. This stunning spot came at a recommendation of a friend of mine who had studied in Copenhagen for a semester and ended up here on a class trip. Luckily, this friend has impeccable taste. Rooted in (pun intended) community, Rosendals Trädgård is a veritable jack-of-all trades. From producing many of their own ingredients on site to serving treats and hearty fare alike, there is so much that this place gets right. To get to the café you walk past a series of plots alive in the soil, wondering what grows there and who planted it. When you reach the café you find that it's a real greenhouse, steeped in sunlight and awash in a rich sea of blues. It's beautiful on the outside, and even more gorgeous on the inside. Something about the self-serve style setup made me feel like I was at a friend's house for tea, contributing to the delightfully homey feel that had seeped into every corner of the abode. I sampled a couple of cookies from the buffet, and my dining companion did the same. When we took our seats, we found that each bite left us feeling warm and comforted despite the nip of Swedish spring beyond the walls of the greenhouse. It was a simple meal, an afternoon pick-me-up, yet it seemed to fill us up in spirit the same way a four-course meal would have filled our bellies. For a plate full of something that feels like home even if you're thousands of miles away from your own, Rosendals Trädgård is an immaculate refuge. Just like the plants that grow on its grounds, you'll find yourself feeling cherished and tended to. What more can we ask of a meal? Read more reviews at letsgetdinner8.wordpress.com.

The walk is absolutely gorgeous and it makes you feel as if you're stepping into an oasis away from Stockholm. They had some Christmas decorations up and a tree, so it felt very festive, even if most of the trees were bare for winter. I loved the meal setup -- there were some quick bites available to grab, as well as pastries, and there were dishes you could order. I got an Asian slaw sandwich and a saffransbulle (LOVE these). I also opted for one of their flavored hot teas, because it was cold in Stockholm in November! The food was great in the cafe, but even better was the plant shop next door! They had Christmas ornaments for sale, as well as lots of handcrafted items and lots of plants. Definitely worth a visit!

It was straight out of the oven perfection. This little shop is in a great location of Gamla Stan and has friendly staff that welcome you warmly. This is mostly a vegan spot, however some items did have cheese, so make sure you know what you're ordering. They also featured piroshkis and turnovers as well. Small and well-situated along one of many narrow streets in Old Town, an outside patio empty on arrival with only two young women inside chatting while a clerk who appeared Indian went about his business after a smiling "Hej," it was after browsing the small selection and asking a few questions answered in excellent English that four items were picked, a fifth added for free in the form of a white star. Taking items elsewhere to enjoy, the Bakery a bit warm given its small size and ovens, it was after pictures were snapped that the complimentary Kokos Blomma was tasted, the flavor of Coconut quickly flooding the mouth though the texture was chalky and unpleasant enough to discourage additional bites. Improving slightly henceforth, the Cinnamon Roll nicely flavored but expectedly dry considering its limitations in terms of ingredients, it was with intrigue that exceedingly moist Carrot Cake was tasted, the bitter Greens presumably Tops or perhaps Kale and the sweetness likely from Figs while a slice of Pie featuring Pears and Pecans was a highlight despite its soggy Crust. Lacking most of the traditional Pastries sampled elsewhere in town, a "Rawfoodbol" saved for last standing in for Sweden's ubiquitous Coconut-covered Chocolate Balls, it was not the Nuts so much as a the grainy Cocoa center that left all but one bite uneaten alongside at least 50% of everything else save for the Pie.

We couldn't get reservation so we went to the restaurant oxen broar- same restaurant but the slip is in an enclosed room. If the food is like that of the broar then I would say it would be amazing. We had ox neck, char fish, ribs with cauliflower side dish, wax beans and potatoes. The side dishes were small but the main dishes were good portion and we ordered 2 portion of the ox neck- it tasted like prosciutto- very tender and mild tasting$10 or both potions. The char fish $25 had excellent flavor and the ribs $20 as well. It was very much a comfort food type of place. All side dishes were around $5/6. The place has a bar and very limited seating but off the pier so you can enjoy a nice view while dining. We took the bus to get there. From the stop, it was a short walk to the restaurant. We actually left the place under $100 including a glass of wine and a mix drink. Which is a steal for eating out.

And the service is great too. The problem is, that the food is only so-so. And the prices are pretty high too. Here are my ratings: Food: 3/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Value: 3/5 We were greeted by a very friendly staff, and opted for a seat on the patio because it was a beautiful day and we wanted to be by the water. But the patio was over-crowded and the table was placed in the middle of a walkway. Not a great start. But we were moved to a different table promptly. The food turned out to be rather disappointing. And there weren't too many options either, especially for fish. Here are the details. Bread basket - 5/5. Excellent bread with some nice home-churned butter. Mackerel Appetizer (SEK 175) - 2/5. This dish was a total flop. It was tiny morsels of fish, sitting at the bottom of a bowl covered by what appeared to be veggie foliage. I had to dig past the foliage to get to the tiny morsels of fish. And it was expensive for what you get. The only redeeming quality was the nice citrus dressing. Charcuterie (SEK 95) - 2/5. Yet another flop. The dish consisted only of salami (which was very mediocre) and some other cured meat (which was pretty tasty). But there was nothing else, no cheese not even a pickle. At least the price was reasonable. Fish Special (SEK 345) - 3/5. The fish wasn't a great fish. It was very bony. And it was served with a cream sauce that was way too salty. And if that wasn't salty enough, there were slices of chewy pancetta which was even saltier. We skipped on desert. Having said that, I think that this restaurant is still worth a visit if only for the great ambiance.
