Everything was clean and sterile and I would refer people here, but for one reason I can't (thus the 3 stars). The client chairs are incredibly uncomfortable. If I am going to sit for 5 hours getting tattooed, I would hope the chair I'm sitting in doesn't feel like a lawn chair. I could feel the bars running through the chair from the lack of padding. Came in Sat, was told to make a consultation for Monday. 30 mins late on that.... Walked out...Girl at the front not friendly and a bit rude. Told me I wouldn't be getting a tattoo until I made appt. I thought that is why I was there for.... Communication is key...let me know that on the consultation doesn't necessarily mean a tattoo on that same day. I had expectations of getting some work done... she responded that isn't how it works, you must've gotten lucky that day when you got seen and tattooed the same day. oh well I guess it wasn't meant to be. Plenty of artist that will take my money. Communication is key. Oh, if they are going to be late for over 30 mins...give us a call... my time is valuable as well. My brother has gotten 2 tattoos here and I was present for both. The second time, he, our sister and I got a sibling tattoo. I showed up and things seemed to be going very well. I felt pleased with the communication and understanding up to this point. We discussed the work and he quoted me a price ($500) to complete a tattoo (key word: complete)- however, I left with almost completed yet amazing work, no doubt the artist knows how to tattoo. The reason I will not be returning is because the tattoo is not complete. we started at noon and we stopped the tattoo at 6:18 pm (they close at 8 pm and he said, "you can go to the front desk and throw them a couple more hundreds of dollars if you want to go to 8 pm". This was not something that was discussed before we started. I understand tattoos take time, effort and may take a lot longer than some may think (I have a full back piece, so I am well aware of what it takes to be patient during the tattooing process). I am frustrated because although, Doug is a great tattoo artist and a decent person. He talks a lot during the tattoo process and every time he speaks, he takes the needle off of the skin (meaning when he wants to have a conversation he stops tattooing completely). I probably stated "oh yeah, that's cool" maybe 200 times yesterday while making minimal eye contact so he would get the hint to get back to tattooing my arm. I am happy with the work that is currently on my arm but the frustration sets in when the reason why we did not complete the tattoo is because he constantly rambled- it's unfair that I paid for a completed tattoo and had to leave with only 75% of the work done because the tattoo artist can't stop rambling and laughing about pointless S***. I get even more frustrated about it is because he rambled about crap I did not care to hear about like him F****** chicks on their periods, or how much he enjoys a chick with huge tits (after spending all day with Doug I definitely know he loves a chick with a nice rack.) He probably mentioned big tits at least 50 times yesterday. I played it off and laughed with him in order to just go along to get along. In the 6.5 hours I was there, I used the restroom 3 times (probably 3-4 minutes were taken away from the session each time. that doesn't equal 6.5 hours of tattooing to leave with an incomplete tattoo), I also ate half a sandwich - taking away another 3 minutes from the tattoo session. As I'm getting tattooed, the secretary brings over a drawing that a customer wants to eventually get tattooed on him. She states that the customer has a budget of $500 to get a tattoo on his forearm (the tattoo she showed doug was three times bigger than the size of mine). Doug stated" Oh his budget is only $500?" and then he agreed to do it as I'm sitting right there with a tattoo smaller than what that guy is asking for (still incomplete). So, note to self : next time go into the shop and say that I have a budget so it'll be cheaper? That doesn't sit right with me. So because I'm not a cheap skate with what goes onto my body I should automatically pay more than the cheapskate that can't afford it? As we're wrapping it up, Doug stops tattooing and says yep this is a good stopping point. I get up, look in the mirror and I'm confused on why we stopped, and the tattoo is not done. He looks at me and says, " well you can give the desk more money and we can keep going". To me, I shouldn't have to because he quoted me $500 for a completed tattoo and it still wasn't finished because he can't stop rambling. and here is the icing to the cake- because I appreciate the work of tattooing and even though I was clearly upset to leave with unfinished work. I still tipped Doug. Yes, it was only $40. After typing this out and reading through my own experience- I wish I didn't tip him at all and I wish I could've told him to his face how much of a terrible experience it was for me to be listening to him ramble for almost 7 hours, watching the clock go by as the tattoo barely got worked on. I've been getting tattoos since I was 16 years old, I am now 28- this is the first negative review I have ever left for an artist. read more

My experience was awesome! This place is so clean you could eat off the floors. Beautiful displays of all of their stock artwork and five huge binders of more artwork. I chose to have mine custom designed because I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted. Cameron was my artist and he designed the most beautiful tattoo for me! It was exactly what I was looking for. It was like he was inside my mind! I had it put on my back of my shoulder. About 4x4. It was a little painful in some areas but Cameron was so good I felt hardly any pain and it took 3 1/2 hours. I took my son to get his first nose piercing here for his 17th birthday. It was a BLOOD BATH!!! It was such a scary sight. It took so long for the piercing to be complete. The piercer stated this is the first time this had happened. He couldn't get the jewelry into my sons nose 20 mins later. We'll long story short. 2 days later after it was in it fell out. My son refused to go back so i took him to "piercing by Tracy" and wow such a huge difference. No blood at all! And it was done in 2 mins! Same price and better options of jewelry! This is the second time I have been to this location, and my second tattoo with Cameron, who is not only an incredibly skilled artist, but he is also very honest and fair when it comes to his prices. His coverup work, even when it comes to some of the most difficult to cover pieces, is unparalleled in my experience. The staff at Frontline Tattoo are all also all incredibly nice, courteous, and professional. I love this place! If you need to work on a tight budget, they are great about doing as much work as they possibly can for the amount that you have within your budget to spend, and then having you come back and get more work done as your budget allows for it. They are hands-down my favorite tattoo shop in Oceanside, and in all of North County! Cameron will not rush through any of his work, either. He will collaborate with you on whatever design you bring to him, and will also help you choose something that is within the scope of the idea you may have for the tattoo that you want, if you're undecided. His use of color, contrast, shading, and lines is profound, and he takes great pride in the product that he delivers...because as he says, "You're going to be wearing this on your body for the rest of your life." Cameron has done a full leg piece tattoo...a beautiful peacock that I have had numerous compliments on, and we are currently working together on a half-sleeve size (not wraparound though) tattoo on my left arm, to cover an old tattoo I regretted getting 20 years ago. We've only got the first half done - outline job and shading of the galaxy that will be the backdrop of the TARDIS from Doctor Who...and you already can barely even see the original tattoo that existed. I'll be sure to post more pics as we go along, but we may only need one more sitting for full completion. Cameron is easy to work with, is talkative if you like talking and not talkative if that's not your thing. I'm autistic, so it took me a while to get to know him, but now that I do, and I trust him completely with putting permanent imagery on my body, we talk about all sorts of things. From lifelike peacocks with beautiful scrolling shade backdrop covering an entire leg, to a full upper arm piece that will represent one of my greatest fandoms in the universe (the Whoverse, for my fellow Whovians out there!), Cameron is definitely your go-to guy. He is a remarkable talent, and I can't wait to finish our latest collaborative piece of work! The other artists at Frontline are just as skilled, and if they're not the best for the job you're looking for, they have no problem referring you to the artist who is...which I find refreshing - it's hard to find decent tattoo shops staffed by people of such impeccable integrity. I had had an idea for a tattoo I wanted to get for a while, and finally decided to get a consultation at Frontline from the recommendation of a friend. I originally went to the Oceanside location and met with an artist who listened to what I had in mind and gave his recommendations. However, we could not agree on the final product - he felt it couldn't be done the way I wanted it, and I, as a woman, just had to have it my way :) I was then referred to Julie over at the Vista location. The feminist side of me said, "Hell yeah, lady artist!" She also took all of my ideas into account and confirmed she could produce the small, delicate piece I was looking for. I came back later that evening to see her, and we chatted a bit more and she worked with me, patiently adjusting her stencil (3 times) before getting to work. Julie was friendly and we kept up a comfortable conversation the entire time. Seriously, she's just a rad, down-to-earth chick. I appreciated that she took the time to make sure everything looked just how I wanted it to. Cameron made me a very happy man last monday (14 Jul 2014). I gave him art that was tough to fit in the area I wanted it. He worked with the art to fit it in the space I allotted him and I'm super stoked about the outcome of the tattoo. He took some artist's liberty to resize and shape things to fit, but it came out looking better than I could have hoped for. Cameron worked on me for about 3 hours, took time every once in a while to check if I was still dealing with the pain well. I was trying to be a good canvas while he worked, and I guess I did alright because the detail is pretty impressive to me.
