Given the secluded area that is Trinity County, and the affinity for "gardening" many folks retreat up there to practice we were really not wanted by many of the residents. But, if the better part of my county was burning down around me for weeks on end I'd probably be a little short fused also. I digress.. My amigos & I opted for dinner from the Family Dairy Store (aka Hayfork Dairy) one night when the fire camp was offering Shrimp Scampi for dinner. Sorry USFS, some things are meant to be eaten in a sit-down restaurant & not a cafeteria/buffet outdoor camping ambiance. The two employee gals we ran across at the Family Dairy were bad ass!! They were pleasant, welcoming, and more than glad to explain how to order our chow. Their patience was only second to the awesomeness of the sandwiches my peers and I ingested. BBQ brisket on a roll with BBQ sauce/nacho-cheese dipping sauce. Holy mother of gawd, WOW. BBQ sauce & nacho cheese may sound line an affront to decency, but it was life changing. I can't do justice to how well that sammie gut bomb made the whole day right. I was all too happy to return the favor by throwing more money at them for some bottles of the local craft beers to take back to camp. My sole complaint is living 4 1/2 hours away from a repeat of that sandwich (review edited/re-posted after Yelp thought police removed the original after it'd been up for four years).

This is the only market in Trinity County where I appreciate what I get for my dollar. They carry a great, well-rounded selection of product, at prices that are competitive in surrounding cities. (Cheaper than Co-op Humboldt, but doesn't have Reddings mega-chain presence of Trader Joe's). Being a farm-centered community, it is super great to have a spot that I can pick up local organic fare year round. Whoever does the ordering/purchasing has the touch, because in dozens of trips, I've never gotten a spoiled berry, melon, or squash. They opened up a deli counter! Just experienced this! Now to-go food while on the road that incorporates my normal diet... Woooo! Make this a stop folks. You'll be glad you did.

Papa Dogs has a real, lived-in feel, a kind of cute and quaint charm that still feels authentically small-town. I ordered the Albuquerque turkey, it was the perfect combo of flavors and the super cold pineapple hard cider was much appreciated. They were out of chips so I skipped on that (obviously) The folks working there? Solid. No fuss, no fake smiles, just genuinely kind and efficient. But let me tell you, the true salvation, the damn highlight of this whole pit stop, was that patio. We peeled off our helmets, stretched out, and let the Weaverville air wash over us.
