Classic small town IGA. I remember when these were everywhere…read more So what do you get for a few pennies more than a super Walmart that you spend 10.00 in gas to get to and back from here? You get real people that live in the community and are friendly and glad to see you. You get a real butcher that actually knows meat, someone that can get or cut what you need if they don't have it out. You will get a person at the register that will offer to help you out even if you only have a few things. You however won't get to fight crowds, you won't have to park a thousand feet away, you won't have to deal with 50,000 sq.ft. of store with only 4 registers open. You will never ever have to "check yourself" out. You won't be supporting some Virginia community instead of your own. Oh yea....if you decide to swing by a restaurant on the way to or from shopping; you won't have to pay 11% in fast food tax and further support another states community versus your own. So give a local place a chance next time; it may surprise you. (I am not affiliated in any way with IGA or food world).

Welcome to Harlan Kentucky, I've been here for about a week now, here in the mountains everything…read moreis spread out It takes a little bit to get anywhere, but the one thing that this area of Kentucky is not short on is unique coffee shops, in Harland Kentucky in the old Buttermore building, you really feel like you have stepped backwards in time. There's an area in the back that feels like your living room, you're surrounded by old books on all four sides, there was a live fire chimney that we sat by for quite a while. This place is filled with thousands of books, a lot of them containing Appalachian literature showing the history of this place. Today we had the creme brulee frappe, a hot coal miner latte, and a hot mocha latte. I was able to order the lattes in "for here" mugs which made for great pictures. We also got the bacon mac and cheese panini, I'm not a big fan of putting mac and cheese in sandwiches, but this tasted amazing. With this being a small downtown area on an early Thursday morning, they only had one employee Skylar, but she was amazing and able to still get everything out quickly and she was very friendly while we had a lot of questions. Final note, I was impressed with the name of this business Moonbow Tipple. Moonbow which means lunar rainbow and tipple which can mean someone who drinks a lot or what your favorite drink would be. Which sounds like a great name for a bookstore. So have to speaking to the barista, moonbow is common occurrence here in this part of Kentucky and Tipple has to do with a coal tipple.

Use the facilities and they were very clean as well. The food was good. Was not a fan of the coleslaw but everyone has their own recipe, and not everybody's going to like every unique recipe for coleslaw. The burger was cooked perfectly. It was quite messy but I think that was part of the recipe and that was intentional with the amount of things that were put on the burger. Is it a great value? No, I don't really think so. There are other locally owned establishments that have larger portions and our price slightly less. Would I come back again? Yes! There are so many other things that I would like to try and I truly believe in supporting the local community by going to locally own businesses.
