We came across Fromart several years ago when the Blackwood Street Farmers Markets first started in Mitchelton. I was immediately drawn to their swiss cheese stall as having lived in Switzerland for several years, was missing my favourite staple cheeses from this time.
Fromart actually supplied the real deal and for those first few months after discovery we would jaunt down to the markets to pick up a range of cheeses from mild Tilsit through to my absolute favourite, Appenzeller. Alas one sad Sunday morning we rocked up to find the stall missing. Fortunately a google search soon after directed us to their website and we've been happy mail delivery customers ever since.
Both the imported and domestically made cheeses of Christian are exceptional. If you are used to the bland supermarket varieties of cheese you will find a world open up to you like no other food experience. There is a depth of flavour and kaleidoscope of taste sensations to these fine cheeses that leaves one wanting to come back time and time again.
Christian's cheeses range in price from $45 - $50 a kilo but can be bought in 500g lots. The cheese is then generally cut into 200-250g blocks which you can choose to have either wrapped in cheese paper or vacuum packed. It is delivered well cooled once a week, for those of us in Brisbane, on a Wednesday morning.
I would recommend starting with some of the sample packs if this kind of cheese is a new experience. They offer taster packs for less than $20 to $47 which are a great introduction. (Personally I love my Jura Mountain, Swiss Appenzell and Gruyere Classic. Christian's own Devils Foot Cheese is also superb.)
Although postage of $15- $25 is a bit extra on top of the cost of the cheese, we find buying every 2 months or so keeps it in check and still very affordable. Yes it is more expensive than buying cheese at Woolies or Coles, but I can assure you that once you try this incredible cheese, you will find it worth every cent of price difference. read more
