There's no missing Fritto Misto: The vaporetto ride out to the isle of Burano drops you right in front and, aside from Burano's colorful homes, the fried seafood is the first thing you'll see.
With success, I managed to enjoy the attractions of Burano before jumping right into its cuisine, but when I did I headed back to Fritto Misto. The causal al fresco dining, the stray cat trolling for handouts, and the expanse of water all around made it quite alluring. Waiting in a line to order, I sought only Fritto Misto (of which they have many variations) but I erred when requesting a sauce in which to dip my offerings and wound up instead with an entire order of seafood pasta and no dipping sauce.
Damn.
All offerings here are served up in what they call an "edible bowl" and, while I understand the attraction of zero waste, the edible bowl was neither attractive nor tasty.
The Fritto Misto sated my craving for fresh fried seafood and the price is likely less than anywhere else on the island. I liked the seafood pasta a bit less but again, it was well priced and not bad for something mistakenly ordered.
Fritto Misto's offerings will fill you up without draining your wallet but you may, as you survey the island, wish that you'd held out for something better. I wasn't taken with the row of tourist restaurants on the central shopping street but I did, in my wanderings, find a charming place with seats along the canal and wished I'd made time for that. Still, if you're looking for fresh seafood at a good price point in Burano, don't overlook Fritto Misto. It's nothing fancy but it gets the job done quite adequately. read more
