The vent damper on our boiler failed and there was no heat to the house. The company who normally…read moreservices our boiler did not return any of my calls or emails. The only person I could get to come out and take a look at it same day was Jerry. Initially when I first called he said it would be next week, but we had a renter coming next week and needed it to be fixed before they arrived since there was no heat in the house and we were worried the pipes might freeze. So after sending him pictures of our boiler, he called me back and said he could come out same day and told me his rate was $350/hr. I accepted it because we were in a jam. But what he failed to tell me was that since this was considered an "emergency", the clock started as soon as I made the call to him to come out. So I ended up having to pay for 2 hours of service, even though he was at the house for less than 1.5 hours and our heat still wasn't fixed. He doesn't take credit card or any online billing or bill pay, so I had to Venmo him the payment right there before he left and he refused to lower the bill. Most companies have an arrival fee which covers the first hour of work after they arrive, and the remainder of the work is billed at their normal rate. To be fair, he did fix a leak in the upstairs master bath. He also offered to rent us some radiators for a few days so the pipes wouldn't freeze. He definitely was taking advantage of a bad situation. I found out later that he could have just flipped the vent damper to open so the house could have heat while we waited for the part, but he refused to flip it open. He said it was a safety hazard for the house. He wanted to make some more money renting us his portable radiators. The next say he texts me that the replacement part was going to be almost $1k and would be shipped out on Monday and proceeds to send me a Venmo request. I told him that price was ridiculously high since I found the entire assembly (with the control motor) online for less than $300 (with free shipping and it would arrive by Monday). He was shocked that I was able to find the part online for much cheaper than what he could get it for and said he also ordered the control for the vent damper. So I asked him what the part number was for the control. He got upset and said that he didn't want to deal with this and that this was too low of a rate for him to do the work and that I should find someone else to replace the vent damper. So that's exactly what I did and what I was planning to do anyway since he had already ripped me off and was trying to do it again.

All of the plumbing under the kitchen sink had been "McGuyvered", which resulted in a large leak all over the new wood floors.
