The store is surprisingly large for a city centre location, it's over two floors, but with escalators going up only if you're heading down you'll need to use the stairs or find the elevator. The store stocks a wide range of electronics from computers to printers, TV's to smart speakers, as well as accessories including ink, and laptop carrying cases. There is a small Apple section, although I much prefer John Lewis at the Victoria Quarter or the Apple Store inside Trinity for Apple products, as the selection is limited. Although they had the advertising in-store for the iPhone 15, the only model out to demo was the iPhone 14, they also seemed to only have the older MacBook Pro's compared to the latest generation - what's the deal with that? The location is great for those who are in the city centre but the problem with this is that the store doesn't have parking, and for a store that specialises in large electronic items from printers to laptops and TVs, that isn't practical, there is Q-Park St Johns Centre which is located a five-minute walk away, but again depending on what you're buying, this could be hard to carry around a busy city centre on foot. 4* - It's a huge store, which is rare for a city centre, being located closer to parking and ensuring they stock a range of the latest tech would be big improvements, otherwise they risk becoming more of an outlet.

I love going there and browsing all of the new games on sale and getting the odd opinion from their staff - the guys in there generally have pretty good knowledge about the stock. They sell all kinds of computer games including PC Games, DS, PSP, Playstation 3, Xbox and more. They generally stock all the newest releases and a wide selection of older games so you shouldn't have a problem getting what you want - unless it is the release day when sensibly you should call and try to reserve the game! They also do pre-owned games for a reduced rate, which is cool. Although you don't often get than much of a discount - between £5-£10 ish - it's worth it since they won't sell a second hand game that won't play. They even have a selection of older games, such as PS2 games, which is great for geeks like me who want to collect all the Silent Hill games and so on! You won't always find an awesome old game, but always worth a check! Sometimes the staff can be a little too 'salesman' for my liking, but generally they are friendly and fun. All good!

There are the accessories that go with these fine items, balance boards, extra joypads, portable packs, hand kits, even rather cool t shirts if that's at all your thing, I know it's mine. Games prices really don't undercut the market, and it appears that Game has some of the higher price tags than the internet and Gamestation. There is also a preowend games section, whereby most of the games look like they've been played once and completed and discarded with the utmost care in order to get on to the latest graphic offering. The last console I did purchase I did get it from Game, and that was only because I went up to Gamestation got the prices after snooping around Game, and then went back to Game, told them I was gonna buy the whole lot from Gamestation and they cut me a deal. So there is wiggle room if you're willing. Aim for a manager type who looks like he or she is low on commission. :)

One Star: I rang Apple Trinity on 9 May and after dealing with a robot, who seemed rather dim, eventually got through to someone in the Philippines. This person was quite helpful and tried to phone the store. Eventually, he made an appointment for me on 14 May and said that he would confirm it by email. How he was going to do this as he did not ask for me email address remains a mystery. Having had no confirmation, I rang again later that day and was told that someone would ring to discuss my request for a new battery. In the morning of 10 May, I was called by a young lady who was extremely unhelpful and when she heard that my phone was a 6S (old, but fine for what I want) she was almost sarcastic and rather rude. She told me that they would probably not have the battery in stock, might not be able to get one on any reasonable timescale, and that there was a high chance of the phone being damaged when they tried to replace the battery. Her customer service skills were zero and clearly was only interested in selling me a new device. I tried to explain that I was elderly and it was not easy for me to get to the store so I wanted some assurance that my trip would be worthwhile. In total, the calls took around 42 minutes - too long to set up an appointment. I was really fed up and spent more time seeing if some no-Apple provider could do the work. The only plus about contacting Apple is that while you wait to speak with someone in the Philippines you have a choice of what music to listen to - popular, classical or jazz - a great feature! Five Star: I turned up for my appointment at 1700 on 14 May with great trepidation expecting to encounter a service style similar to what I had already been exposed to. Things could not have been more different! I was dealt with by Rick who could not have been more helpful and the battery (they were in fact in stock, counter to what I had been told) could have been fitted then and there had I not had another appointment (and forgotten my Apple password). I came back the following day and again was treated well and the battery was fitted without difficulty. So my 'in store' experience was good, though I would suggest that there is some sort of 'check-in' desk set up as at present you walk around looking lost until someone in a green T-shirt takes pity on you!! All rather haphazard.

Everything is the same with the products, with the way that the products are sold and with the general feel of the place. TWO ... The only real difference from one to the next are the staff serving you, and the overall architectural feel of the building. With regards 1, it's as brilliant as you've expected an Apple Store to be, it's light and airy and full of tech goodness; now yes, I'm somewhat of an Apple fanboy, but having got an iPad and an iPhone and a powerbook, I go into the Apple Store for the third party kit - and in this it hardly ever fails to deliver something to coo at. With regards 2, it's in Trinity and it's lovely and new and chances are will stay looking that way for some time - though you can't help think that there are probably better places in Leeds to have put the new Apple Store, places that fit more in line with the 'differentness' of the Stores on 5th avenue, regent street, the place in Berlin from last weeks keynote... it's like these places got grand stages to display some lovely tech kit, we got a glorified prefab. In terms of people, I've had the pleasure of dealing with a number of them now, and I can honestly say that they're the most unhelpful, most unsmiling, most pedestrian looking group of Apple employees who I've ever met and spoken to. And it's a bit of a shame. But maybe the Hollister store next door snapped up all the lovely people before Apple could get their hiring done. Average store, great tech, poor staff... shame really.

I ventured in to browse the digital cameras but I got a little distracted by all the shiny TVs on the way. Some of them really were an impressive size! Sony's other offerings include the aforementioned digital cameras, as well as digital SLR cameras, a couple of Ebooks, laptops, camcorders, mp3 players and DVD players. These products don't seem to have as wide a range as the TVs but all are found in clear sections for easy browsing and come at a wide range of prices to suit different pockets. The staff were very helpful, advising on price and function and very informative (which was helpful as I admit I'm pretty clueless!). I can't vouch for Sony above other brands but this shop did provide a pleasant and informative browsing experience.

But what makes Sony Centre stand out from the crowd? For me, it's two things. Number one - the staff, and number two - the product. I couldn't claim to be any kind of expert with electricals but there are a number of things that I've gleaned from friends and family. Number one seems to be that Japanese companies seem to make better televisions, and the other is that Sony is one of the most reliable. I've not had any experience to prove otherwise, and I have had other brands fail so that is one case for going with Sony Centre. The other is that the staff, both in store and the chaps who install your television/electricals/sound system etc, have always been totally helpful and totally lovely. So there you go, a few pointers towards a decent place to purchase those expensive boxes of wire and stuff that makes picture movies on the glass bits with coordinated noise sounds. Or TVs. Etc.
