I ordered the chicken and beef empanadas--they were cooked perfectly with a nice, hot center. Their passion fruit mocktail was excellent. While the flavor was good, the vegetables were a bit overcooked for my taste, and the amount of cheese served was a little much for me. There comes a point when a restaurant starts to lose its shine, and unfortunately, I think Frida's may be at that stage. We've been coming here since it first opened and have noticed a significant change over the last couple of years. Tonight, when we walked in, the only acknowledgment we got was from a waitress who was already helping another customer--no one was at the front to greet guests. I understand it's the holiday season, but it was surprising to see empty tables and a lack of energy in the restaurant. We ordered our usual drinks and the guacamole, which oddly came in a red plastic bowl this time. The guacamole itself was delicious, though. My wife ordered the shrimp tacos, and I got the steak fajitas. The tacos came with a side of white rice, but we were pretty sure they used to come with beans as well, so we asked for a side. The steak fajitas were fantastic. Still, I couldn't help but notice the cheese--it didn't look or taste like the usual white cheese they typically serve, though I could be mistaken. Frida is a Mexican restaurant that is Frida Kahlo themed. I've been following them on social media for a while and was excited to check them out. I love their decor and the service was excellent. There is a parking lot also. I started off with a hibiscus tea which was refreshing. They offer complimentary salsa and chips, also delicious. We ordered guacamole as well, super good but definitely on the pricier side. My meal was a recommendation from the server, I was not disappointed. I was torn because I wanted everything on the menu. I had the 4 Tacos Campechanos which had steak, chorizo, nopales, and green onions, on corn tortillas. It came with a salsa Verde and it was so good. This place is so cute! Love the decor and vibe. It's a small, cozy space filled with color and Friday Kahlo. The host and server were very friendly and food arrived quickly after ordering. They were patient as everyone figured out what they wanted to order. I ordered the mole enchiladas and the other members of the group ordered alambres, one with steak and one with carnitas. My enchiladas plate was HUGE. It came with 3 enchiladas stuffed with chicken and a large side of rice and beans. The alambres were delicious, I especially liked the carnitas, but the steak was great and had a really nice flavor. My party was a little jelly of my plate though because they didn't realize theirs did not come with rice and beans. We ended up ordering a side of rice and beans. It was smaller than the amount I had on my plate and when we got the check we realized it was $7 which felt a bit steep. Overall I really enjoyed my meal and experience! I've been coming to Frida off and on for quite a while now. I don't know how I haven't written a review yet, so here goes! Lol. Atmosphere/Appearance: Set right off of New Britain Avenue in the old Tapas building is this lively, beautifully decorated, chic, modern restaurant! I love the energy in here, but it does seem a big tight in there. I get that they want to get as many people in the building as possible, but it just feels cozy at times. There's exposed brick on the exterior walls, deep, grey-ish wood that creates the base for the floor and some half-walls. The ceilings and walls are very brightly decorated thus making you feel like you are in Mexico having a grand time! Service: Most of the time we came here we sat at the bar and we had no complaints. It's also awesome to see the owners in there working, helping out and being a part of the action, not just an absentee owner! Food: I've had everything from wings, tacos, guacamole and much more. The food is delicious and there's nothing to complain about! Value: It's definitely a step above your usual cheap Mexican food and rightfully so! You can certainly run the bill up here with drinks, but it won't totally break your pockets. In conclusion, I love coming here to kick back, try unique drinks, unique desserts and just have GOOD FOOD. Period. Check this place out if you're in the area and if you can get in! We stopped in for lunch around 1:30 on what should have been a quiet afternoon. The restaurant was nearly empty, so we expected a quick meal. Unfortunately, it turned into one of the most disappointing lunch experiences we've had. The first odd moment came when we were seated at a table for four. After we sat down, the hostess immediately separated the tables "in case another party needed them." It was strange considering there were plenty of empty tables and we could have simply been seated at a table for two. After waiting about 10 minutes, we finally received menus and placed our order. I requested two simple changes: no tomatoes and cheese instead of guacamole. About 20 minutes later the food arrived, but my order still had both tomatoes and guacamole. Our server never came back to check on us, so with only an hour for lunch I ate around it instead of sending it back. The food was okay, but dry and not worth the price. When we were ready to leave, we couldn't find our server and had to ask someone else for our check. I paid with cash and specifically asked for change. The server took the money, said "thank you," and never returned. I started to follow her, but we had already lost so much time that we had to get back to work. She kept the change, turning it into a tip of well over 30%. Everyone can have an off day, but this was a series of service failures from start to finish. Unfortunately, we won't be back, and based on this experience, I wouldn't even consider ordering takeout. read more

After a long day of traveling and completing an 8-hour course for my guard card, which included a test, I decided it was time to celebrate. I came to this restaurant and ordered the flautas with chicken. Mari chose two beef tacos and two pork tacos, and we decided to share everything. The flautas were perfectly crunchy, just the way I like them, but unfortunately, the chicken was lacking in flavor and came off as a bit bland. The chicken flautas for me were a little bland and I would have preferred them a title more crunchy but everyone has different taste. Love the garnishes that came with the flautas to make them taste fresh. Someone sitting near me had the quesadilla and it looked banging so I'm getting that next time. Drove out to this cute strip mall-esque Mexican spot to take part in their highly regarded happy hour. Kind of upset that they only allow happy hour at the bar, but don't accommodate children at the bar, so we were stuck at a half booth. We started with the fundito. It was greasier than I'm used to but still quite good. We finished the app. You shouldn't otw it comes with two small tortillas and they up charge if you need more. I ordered the Birria for my main course. It does not come with any side dishes. It looked oily and after that fundito experience I chose to just box it to go. Definitely not a spot to bring kids. Their 'kids meal was two lukewarm tenders (menu said 3) and a tiny scoop of rice and the tiniest cup of apple juice I've seen. They also served me and my husband first and had to go back for my sons. We stopped by for a quick dinner before heading to see a show. This was the perfect place. First the chips. Actually the salsa. It wasn't too spicy and as a result I had to fight my dining partner for it. It was really good. We then started with the Colombian style empanadas which seemed to have the corn flour with chicken. They were hearty and unlike some others we've had. Delish. I then had the Birria tacos and really enjoyed them. They weren't greasy and the dipping made the dish. Very filling as well. "Good things come in small packages" this is absolutely true at Frida. It's a small space but probably the best Mexican food ever. I've been here a couple of time and yet to eat something I disliked, Outstanding quality and service, their cocktails are some of the best.. made with fresh ingredients and served in the most adorable glassware. Very Instagramable!! On my recent visit, I had the avacado margarita...fresh avocado purée with a hint of spice with the Jalapeño tequila and cilantro. I've never had a marg so good! For food, I decided to go with the Frida platter.. although it was too much food for one person it was great for sampling, queso nachos (doesn't make for good leftovers so eat it there), beans, cheese quesadilla, mini chicken flautas (the best). I can't wait to go back for happy hour (M-F 3 to 6) the menu and prices are great. And maybe this time I'll even save room for dessert. read more

It's every Monday to Friday from 3:00 to 6:00. It's not limited to the bar (like some inferior Happy Hours), you can get Happy at any one of their booths, like the three of us did. And unlike some other Faux Happy Hours, this one is the real deal with plenty of discounted food and beverage choices. Want some examples? Sure you do. Actually your Happy Hour Experience starts with complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were very good, nice and fresh and without a drop of grease or oil in sight. And the salsa was very good- definitely on the mild side but packing a ton of flavor. There are thirteen HH food choices ranging from $4 Lava Cake to $9 Ceviche Mixto. Most of the choices congregate in the $5-$7 range for guacamole, bean dip, nachs, tacos, empanadas, flautas, street corn and wings. HH drinks include 17 choices of $4 beers, $5 wines, and $7-$9 cocktails. So combined with the HH food choices, there really is a tremendous amount of variety here. I ordered a $7 Mandarin Mule, a $5 guacamole, and the $5.50 steak tacos. My cocktail included Mandarin Vodka, lime and ginger beer and it was a decent sized drink. The HH guacamole was a 4-ounce portion which lasted quite a long time with Frida's excellent chips. My tacos were a pair of tender steak cubes with onions and cilantro on corn tortillas. They were served with a green salsa that had quite a high zip factor. Service was friendly and efficient. Bottom line? What more can you ask for in a Happy Hour than plenty of food choices, high quality food, good pricing, and the same holds true for the HH beverages. I've been to Fridas numerous times and every time I walk in and leave I'm Always very content and satisfied. This weekend I went to a get together with friends to celebrate a birthday. I find it to be the perfect place for any celebration. The food presentation is beautiful, the drinks came out specially saying Happy Birthday! Just cute for any occasion! Food is excellent always and the staff is as well. Flan is my favorite! But so are many other items on the menu! Patio is open which is really awesome if you like yo dine and get the fresh air. There is a brunch on Sundays and Industrial Nights on Monday which is similar to a happy hour menu except is all Night . Then happy hour is Monday-Friday 3-6 pm Great Menu they have! This is my second time visiting Frida. It was busy, but luckily, a table came available pretty quickly. It's so bright inside with murals and music just as colorful. Each person working is a part of a big team, working well together. I noticed the owner overseeing everyone. We happened to be in the area and found Frida through Yelp. The restaurant had great decor including a day of the dead display in the entry. The bar looked like a great spot to hang out and with all the beautiful crafted drinks why not!! We found the staff to be very attentive with water and chips which was greatly appreciated. I had a house margarita which was quite good and the virgin drink, Frida mocktail with strawberry purée was awesome. For dinner we ate the guacamole and chips. I will say the guacamole potion was a little smaller than expected, but the way the meal all worked out it was perfect. For the entrees we enjoyed the FRIDA HUARACHE which features a handmade corn tortilla, refried beans, lettuce, sour cream, queso fresco, with Vegetables. For my entree I enjoyed the FRIDA'S FAJITAS with Mexican rice, refried beans, pico de gallo, cream, guacamole, shredded cheese, bell peppers, onions, 4 corn tortillas and shrimp. After seeing the frida tower all over my feed decided to finally try it for myself. We sat at the bar for drinks and apps for a sister's Friday night cap. My sister ordered a passion fruit mezcalita and she said it was the perfect amount of smokiness and sweetness. I had a passion fruit margarita and it was perfect. For our shareable apps we ordered the frida tower and chicken empanadas colombiana. The seafood tower was everything I was expecting and more. It was limey and refreshing. It was a great appetizer it was filling and it can definitely be eaten as a meal. The service at the bar was bleh with the exception of Juan which came and checked on us a few times and asked how we were enjoying the food. Friends and I had a nice time gathering at this place! The artwork on the walls and history told through it is simply beautiful! We had drinks and shared a bunch of appetizers, some standouts I must mention! Starting with the tostada, topped with grilled chicken, shredded lettuce, refried beans and Mexican cheese, yummo! The empanadas, especially the shredded chicken and potato one was another must try! If you don't mind a little heat, ask for their house made hot sauce! It is the BOMB!! I think I put it on pretty much everything I had apart from dessert of course and it took it to another level! Lastly, the red sangria was as delicious as the one I make, which made me sooo happy! This place is a nested in west Hartford and what a great place it is for some great authentic Mexican food. The place of course pays tribute to Frida and her artistic views. With the bar and restaurant decorated with lots of color it is a great place for groups or a date. We had an awesome hosts that took us all in even with a live Mariachi band to make you feel like your in Mexico. The drinks hit hard so don't think they skimp out on that. I would recommend the tacos and the shrimp cocktail salad. The guacamole was made fresh in house and went great with the chips. Although my favorite drink is the avocado margarita which is not on the happy hour specials. However the delicious fish ceviche is! And you can tell them how spicy you like it. Hey y'all I'm back with another food review. The food was average it lack authenticity, when I go into different cultural restaurants I'm looking to get an experience. The homemade hot sauce brought that authenticity as well as the drinks and the dessert. In my opinion i needed more flavor from the food. The Frida decorations are beautiful, not overdone. I'd come back again. This is the closest to authentic Mexican food I have tried in CT coming from a Mexican who used to live in Chicago.
