Fresh Citrus Direct does just what the name implies - the send fresh citrus fruit to you (on receipt of payment of course.. you don't just get citrus turning up unannounced... that would be weird). Citrus that is grown on their farm in Loxton SA.
Why bother with home delivered fruit when oranges and mandarins and the like are so easy and cheap at the supermarket? Because by buying direct from the grower, you give all that money to the grower. When you buy from the supermarket you give most of the money to the supermarket. the farmer gets a pittance. A lot of farmers simply can't make enough from selling their produce into the supermarkets and are being forced to close down. Citrus trees are being bulldozed because its just not economical to grow them.
Not economical to grow them for the supermarkets that is. A lot of producers (like the Arnold family that run fresh citrus direct) are turning to direct sales. That way they money goes to them. they can feed their families and keep their farms profitable and we get fantastic quality, locally grown, seasonal fruit. Everyone wins. Except the supermarkets.
The quality of the fruit is fantastic. Its picked and shipped to you within 24 hours (free delivery to most of the country as well). It tastes fantastic and keeps for ages because its so fresh. They use an integrated pest management system so pesticide use is kept to a minimum. This is really top quality stuff. For what you get, the prices are really good. A 5kg box of oranges will set you back $30 including shipping. That's $6/kg. Not bad for absolutely top quality fruit. Bigger boxes are better value if you can get through it all in time.
I know you can get oranges for $3/kilo from the supermarket all year round but they are dry, flavourless stuff. And think about it. If the supermarket sells for $3/kilo, how much is the farmer getting? $1.50? $1? $0.50? Farmers can't survive on that. Buy buying direct the Arnolds get the full $6. That way they can afford to feed their family and keep their farm going.
They don't cold store so the fruit is only available in season. Buying seasonally is a great way to reconnect with food. If things are available all year round, we take then for granted. We treat them as a commodity and we buy for cheapness not quality. If we treat produce as a seasonal thing, which it is, then we anticipate the season, we look forward to it, we relish the produce when the season arrives.
So.. support local growers. Live seasonally. Buy for quality. Love your food. read more
