Tucked behind a nondescript ivy-covered brick building is a lovely seven months "new" salon called French Twist. Sure, my friend Florence is a stylist there (is this review biased??), I don't primp and preen in salons often, and I'm just a friendly visitor to San Diego. However, I have nothing but praise for this salon! The shop is a welcome haven from the up-and-coming trendy envrions of the East Village. It is immaculate and bright, and the exposed brick is a nice touch to the very-chic decor. The backround music rocks because the stylists get to play their ipods over the sound system. So you'll hear Northern Soul playlists mixed with the Smiths or lounge exotica a-go-go- I enjoy musical diversity whilst sitting patiently as someone sculpts my hair. In October, I went to Florence for my wedding hair trial since I love her (hair) style, and she super-duper friendly. Not many stylists carry Japanese hair style books, and knowing Florence, she could probably replicate those cute Harajuku street-style hair with no problem. While a-mist in hair spray, I got to chit chat with the owner Carol while she worked on the nails of a client, and she too was totally darling! Before I left the salon, I promised to get my nails done before my wedding, and silly me, I lost her business card. However, while talking with Florence, it looks like Carol had remembered me and had already planned to do my nails sometime before my wedding! I was happy she didn't pressure me to get that french tip nail nonsense, and even happier when she painted my nails black. My sister, a manicure virgin, was totally impressed - she was a changed woman! - and happy with Carol's work. French Twist offers: Aqua-chi foot soak, tanning, makeup, facial waxing, up-dos, highlights, Eurolock extensions, and a bunch of other hair and nails stuffs I'm not familiar with- all for a fairly decent price. So first off let me start by saying I rarely get my hair done. I usually get just a trim or layers and have only gotten an ombré once before this time. I was in San Diego for a wedding and needed a blow out. I found this salon on Yelp and am I glad! I explained that my fine, long hair NEVER holds any style longer than ten minutes, so I didn't expect much. She was really efficient with her time, I was out in plenty of time but never felt rushed. We had great conversation the whole time, usually I just stare at a phone or TV, such a nice change. And most importantly, the beachy waves I asked for were PERFECT and they held all night! In fact, the blowout was saturday afternoon, and it's now Tuesday afternoon and it's STILL somewhat wavy. I'm never washing it again (or at least till these waves leave). I had an emergency color correction during my vacation in San Diego. I had orange hair that need to be fixed asap. The most expensive and worst pedicure I have ever got. It's the only nail salon I have been to that doesn't have a pedicure chair. Instead a regular chair with a small plastic basin. My legs got itchy from the towel that was placed underneath my legs. After I came back to my hotel, I found there was a bubble on my toe nail. I went there because it's close to Marriott and I read a good review for Hannah. When I walked in and asked for Hannah, I was told she doesn't work there any more. I've recently migrated down to San Diego from Orange County and have yet to find a go-to person for my stubborn "asian hair". That is, until now! My gf had her hair done here by Florence (Flo) a few weeks ago. Seeing as how great it turned out, I decided to give Flo a try myself. I came in not knowing what I wanted, so I asked Flo to give me something "fun." To my surprise, I received not only a "fun" haircut, but arguably one of the best haircuts ever! Everything from my side burns to the back of my head had impeccable detail. This was a definite head turner! To really top things off, Flo gave me ideas on future hair styles and advice on how to achieve them (e.g., types of hair products, treatments, and etc...). Most stylists I go to usually don't provide me with any significant insight on how I could improve my hair and look, but the ones that do earn a special place in my heart and a review from me on Yelp. Overall, Flo had a really great aura to her which made the whole experience really enjoyable. In addition, she came off as being enthusiastic and sincerely concerned about making me look good. I love this salon! Flo cuts my hair and let me tell you, there is no one quite like her. It is perfect every time, and I am super anal about my hair. Its bright red and peach so if it's not cut right, I bet I would look pretty crazy. She never disappoints me and is just the sweetest person. After meeting Florence I told her to just do "whatever looks good". 20 minutes later I had a fantastic hair cut, I was actually amazed due to the difficulty of finding a good stylist. So I got one of those promotional coupons they had... WHAT A STEAL! My boyfriend bought it for me and I thought it was just going to be so so. I mean would you expect great service when you know they are only getting tipped by you? The coupon was $40 and it paid for itself in my very first visit. I went in for a spray tan and eye brow wax. Right when I walked in Carol offered me a drink and then had me all situated to get waxed. Once that was done she did my tan and it turned out awesome. I was heading out to Rancho Mirage for the weekend and was nice and tan by the pool and new it looked totally natural. I felt horrible at the end when I hadn't brought more cash to tip better. ($5 bucks each just didn't seem right after what a great time I had and how friendly the ladies were to me.) My second visit was just last week and it's why I decided to yelp. I had an appt on Wed. to get my hair cut but woke up with the most severe allergy attack. The coupon states if you cancel less than 24 hrs in advance you forfeit the service scheduled. So I was so bummed when I called in to ask to reschedule. The girl on the phone wasn't quite sure what to do since I was sick so she had Carol call me back and figure it out. I explained I was breathing through a cloth and sneezing up a storm and she was so sweet she said, "Well when will you be better so we can get you in for your hair cut?" I was so happy! I went in the next day and got an awesome cut by Rose! My hair is usually so difficult because it's so thick, but I came out with a shaggy stylish cut and it looks great! The really great points about this salon are they are super friendly, it's not very crowded (it's very calm and serene) not like some of those salons that seem more like slaughter houses - packing in as many people as possible and sending them on there way before their pedi is even dry... It's cute inside and out. They cater to you and really try to make you feel good about the money you spend. Also, not once have I felt pressured to buy a product I know I don't need. I mean come on, I already have shampoo's and conditioner's that I like using! Please don't give me attitude because I don't want yet ANOTHER hair cream! Some salons are snooty and bitchy, but this one is classy and comfortable! My mom and I had absolutely the best time at French Twist, we highly recommend it! We were staying at the Meriot Convention Center across the street and had a snazzy event to go to. We thought we'd try to sneak in without reservations, and luck would have it, the owner Carol and her wonderful staff bent over backwards to help us out and fit us in. We were offered wine, smiles, and expertise. I got a mani, pedi, and an up-do at an extremely reasonable price. I was recently in San Diego for the weekend and needed to get my nails done. Although the girls who did my nails were super sweet and friendly I have to say this is the worst Shellac I have ever gotten and probably the most expensive. My finger nail tips were not painted and looked really sloppy. I paid 80$ for a mani-pedi and 2 days later, one finger is already chipped. NEVER EVER EVER COME HERE! EVER! We were apart of a wedding in SD and needed to get our nails done before the wedding. Our hotel recommended this spot. We had every intention to like this place however... They cut our nails way too short They trimmed my cuticles too much to where my flesh was partially exposed They were very rough on our feet and not in a good way The paint job was mediocre, chipped within 2 days. To top it off they charged us $100 for mani pedi when it was suppose to be $65 (the chalkboard sign on the door). When we confronted them they said the sign is not up to date. Really? This is a classy looking little salon, nearby the convention center! They use good quality products like Kerastase and Moroccanoil. However, when I got my blowout, I was pretty disappointed. I have very thick hair with a lot of volume so I asked to have a blowout that was slimming/sleek and framed my face. Instead, I got hair that was so flat at the crown of my head and more voluminous at the bottom that it did not flatter my face shape at all. It was almost like they didn't really examine my face shape to see what was the best course of action. When I asked for layers framing my face, I didn't mean for my hair to be so styled and stuck to my face that literally I couldn't get the hair out of my face. It was like she was trying to hide my face by blowdrying all my hair on my face. I seriously had to keep pushing my hair back for it to not be annoying. I eventually told her to put more volume at the crown but get my hair out of my face. It was a little better at that point but I was disappointed at paying 35+ tip for it.
