Male bike from American Bicycle Rental Company
Isaac S.

Exploring a city you've never been to by bicycle is awesome. On our recent (first) trip to New Orleans, we were lucky enough to pick The American Bicycle Rental Company as the place to rent our bikes from (randomly, based on the pictures on their website). We arrived late in the day (near closing time), and when we arrived, a sign was taped to the door indicating that they had to step out to help a customer who had a flat. I gave Ryan a call, and he answered right away. He was really pleasant to talk to, apologized, and let us know when he thought he'd be back. When it ended up that he was going to be a little bit longer than he'd originally thought, he called me back with the update. I appreciated that. When he got back, he was all one could hope for in terms of service. Having never been to New Orleans before, and understanding that every city has its share of spots to avoid, Ryan grabbed a map and sat with us to place red X's over areas that were maybe a bit too "gangster" for us. He highlighted routes all over the city that he would recommend as a local cyclist. He circled certain spots that were worth visiting. It was incredibly useful -- we kept that map handy the entire time we were there. And not only was he insightful, but he was also funny and very kind. He gave us his personal cell number, and encouraged us to call him or text him if we had any questions. The bikes themselves were awesome. Hulking American steel frame cruisers accompanied by easy-to-use (and carry) locks, bike lights and helmets if you want them (no additional charge). If you're in chill mode and just want to see the city (like we did), then these are great bikes. I especially love the guys' bikes. Bottom line: next time you're looking to cruise through the neighborhoods of New Orleans and need a local's guidance, give Ryan a call at American Bicycle Rental Company.

Riding my bike to dinner reservation at Palace Cafe I just told the rest of my party: "I'll meet you there!"

I wanted to rent a bike during my visit to New Orleans, because I have a bad hip joint which greatly limits my ability to walk distances. I came to this shop with lots of questions about night safety, the possibility of theft, and if I'd have air pressure issues as an overweight person. They answered each question with honesty and detail and eased my mind. Their contract was also very informational about how to avoid theft and traffic tickets. I rented a bike for three days for $103. I didn't have a single issue. I stayed at the Marriott by the convention center and was able to check my bike at the front desk each night for free. I received countless compliments about how beautiful the bike was, it was easy to lock, and the lights were easy to attach/detach. Taxi drivers were a bit impatient and honked a few times, but, overall, I felt safe riding the bike in traffic. I wholeheartedly recommend this shop! They have pride in their service and product, and it's easy to see why. I had an awesome experience!

I would leave 6 stars if I could. Ryan (I believe was his name) was extremely friendly, professional and helpful. You can tell by seeing his shop and talking to him that he takes a lot of pride in his business and products. His bikes are THE MOST comfortable bikes to rent in New Orleans, I have actually rented bikes from multiple other companies in the city and his were by far superior to his competitors. When riding, I normally get pain in my crotch area but his seats were big, cushioned and comfortable and made a super long bike ride very comfy and easy. I could have rode the bike all day without issues. His service was also excellent. He was helpful with suggestions and directions before we took off from his shop, he even had a customized map with bike routes and suggestions of places to check out. When riding, we had a small hiccup (user error) with one of his bikes on the other side of town and he drove out to us with a new bike so we didn't have to worry about anything. The other thing that sets Ryan's company apart from the others is the 24h bike drop off. At other companies you have to worry about rushing back to the shop before it closes to avoid a huge fee but since you have the flexibility to return whenever you need to it makes the ride a lot less stressful and more enjoyable. I will definitely be coming back to the shop as I'm in N.O. Twice a year and always love exploring the city via bike. Make sure you rent a bike while on your trip to New Orleans, biking in the city is by far the best way to see it so make sure you stop by Ryan's shop when you're there!

This might be my forth time renting bikes from the American Bicycle Company in NOLA! We did not go on one of the amazing, fun and incredibly informative tours this time, but you should. With map in hand, we explored from the The By Water to the Garden District and everything in between. Definitely get their map with highlighted stops! This is the best way to see the city. Last advice: leave the bike home at night and stop in for breakfast the the By Water Bakery. My favorite tour guide is Teddy but I hear they are all fab!

These guys are legit! Ollie and Bill are super friendly and will set you up with some quality, well maintained, bicycles to cruise the city. Their store is clean and professional. We picked up our bikes later in the afternoon, but they have it setup so that you can return the bikes after hours, so you can enjoy an afternoon and don't have to worry about where to lock them up at night. As an avid cyclist and someone that works in the bicycle industry, I get a little picky about bike rentals, but they provided a 5 star service. Don't get fooled by the other rental shops in the French Quarter. Some show pictures of bikes they don't have in stock and/or you're limited to their working hours. The American Bicycle Rental Company is the only place you should go to rent bikes in the French Quarter!

Best bike rental in NOLA!

Back then? Danny was our guide...this time? Danny was our guide! Not only did we learn a lot of fascinating facts, the cruise time was just FUN. Not particularly difficult (the route is pretty flat), bike tours are always a great way to "meet" a city. Why? You're getting an eye level view of the place you're visiting, but people like Danny? They are true ambassadors for a city. It's so clear that he not only knows his stuff, he clearly loves the city - and its history - so much. We did the Creole history tour, but I have ZERO doubt that when we return, we'll see these guys again - and probably do the Culinary Tour next time! And by the way? As he sent us on our way, Danny also did us the solid of suggesting some local joints for music and such. To be honest? The city ought to bottle Danny and his energy - he's an absolute credit to the magic that NOLA really is.

Book it! We took a tour in late May with our family of 8. This was both our first time doing a bike tour and their first time doing a "family with six young kids" tour. Jeff hit it out of the park! They were so accommodating, even letting us borrow his sweet daughter's tag-along bike for the ride. We loved the ride through the historic neighborhood of New Orleans. At each stop Jeff fed us a bit more history in an exciting way that was interesting to all of us, ages 4 to 45 (the 2 year old was just there for the ride). My kids learned about shotgun houses, hurricane Katrina and its impact on New Orleans, the Mississippi River, Cajun vs. Creole, why everything is so colorful in NOLA, art/music in NOLA culture, and many many other things. Our tour ended with a stop at Lorettas, where we ate the best beignets of our trip (and we tried multiple!). The tour was so fun and engaging I could not believe three hours had already gone by. On our two week summer roadtrip, we took a lot of tours. This one was the most expensive tour (which is definitely a factor for us), but I'm so glad we did it. We got to see a side to New Orleans we never would have otherwise. Beyond the tour, we loved the bike ride itself so much I'm now home and scouring the internet for used adult and tag-along bikes so we can all ride around our own city. If you're looking for a kid-friendly activity in New Orleans that's fun for you too, you've found it. Two thumbs up to Confederacy of Cruisers bike tours!

First of all, Bob knows everyone and everyone seems to love Bob. I was quite surprised at how once we got off the main ways, NOLA really began to feel like a small town. He showed us gorgeous parks, took us to some of the worst hit parts of the city, and led us down all kinds of different neighborhoods so we really got a sense of the city. Bob is super informed, very friendly, and hands down one of the best tour guides in any city, anywhere. He really loves the NOLA culture and when he talks you know he's not just rehearsed from a script. I'm so glad that we didn't take one of the tours that focused on the main parts (French Quarter, Bourbon St. Etc.). I feel like we got enough of that walking around on our own. Bob gave us the history of the city and how the way of life here has come to be. We saw quite a few bike tours towards the end of our trip and the people's eyes were glazed over. It was a tour guide standing and lecturing. Bob is so the opposite! You feel like you just spent the day with a great friend.....who just happens to know anything and everything about this amazing city.

After reading several positive reviews on a variety of bike tour companies I chose Big Easy Tours…read more We were not disappointed! My sister and I chose to do the tour the first day we were there so we could get familiar with the town and any recommendations from Bob. This was an excellent decision and I would highly doing your tour the first day and early to avoid the heat. We lucked out as the morning was overcast and cool. We also lucked out as we were the only two on the tour. We took the 3 hour tour but if we would have realized how comfortable the day and how informative the tour was we would have elected to take 20 mile tour vs the 10 mile. We chose the Esplanade tour and started out at the Mississippi River and toured through the French Qtr, a historic cemetery, City park , and other various NOLA neighborhoods. Bob was very knowledgeable about the history and culture of the city and did a great job of sharing it with us. Don't be feel intimidated by a bike tour the city is flat, the pace is just right with many stops along the way. The cruiser bikes are excellent for this type of tour. Bob gave us great tips on bars, restaurants, and things to do on our quick trip. Highly recommend his tour to anyone visiting the area!!

Setting up the trip by email was easy and they answered all my questions - from vegetarian lunch options to was this suitable for a relatively inexperienced bicyclist. We were touring on St. Joseph's day so he threw in a visit to 2 altars, asking us ahead of time if we were ok with that. You start off on a cruiser bicycle with a basket, a bottle of water and helmet. We stopped to get lunch to go from Cajun Jo's, a plain neighborhood place run by a Vietnamese family. Simple food at cheap prices. We then rode a few block to eat lunch in Mr. Lewis's backyard. Visiting Mr. Lewis was a special experience, and hearing from him about his Dance and Feathers museum. He lost all the exhibits except a few to Katrina and as rebuilt it again. He's the community glue who lives for what he does. And for his grandchildren :) The tour is about 4.5 hours long but don't let this scare you. The bike seats are very comfortable, the pace is relaxed with a lot of breaks, drivers are patient letting bicyclists through, and the city is very flat. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and funny, although he may have been a tad bit too heavy on the Catholic Church jokes. The tour ended at the LaLaurie house, and our guide shared a story about a little girl on who was recently on his tour who started crying and asked why there were dead people on the balcony. Spooky! I was so intrigued by what he said that I started looking up stories about Delphine LaLaurie and the haunting of the house. When I got home, I even started watching season 3 of American Horror Story, which has the character Delphine LaLaurie (accurate? No. Fun? Yes!). This was a fun way to spend the evening. There was an obnoxiously drunk guy on our tour, and our guide handled him well.
