The ambiance is what ever you need it to be. You can sit in a family friendly area or tuck yourselves in a slightly darker area for a quaint dining experience. Very friendly attentive staff. Very good food and priced anywhere from 10 to 40 dollars. I had prime rib special and it did not disappoint. Definitely will be back if ever in the area. read more

Great pricing and service is solid. Didn't sit at the bar but it looks like a nice spot to down a few while watching a game! Came here with my girlfriend and mother; the inside was dirty and smelled like old fish oil. There were maybe two other parties in the building, and the waitress told us we couldn't be seated because they had a party of seven coming in soon and wouldn't be able to accommodate a party of three. Instead of asking us if we'd like to wait, she just stared at us until we awkwardly turned around and left while the other people in the restaurant stared as well. We'd have been happy to wait, but apparently they'd rather lose business??? Very uncomfortable and embarrassing experience. We won't be returning any time soon. read more

This is my first review and not sure how hard I should grade. So here goes. I am giving it 3 stars. I will probably not give out many 5 star reviews unless really blown away. The atmosphere is very much what I anticipated for an old train station. They had model train tracks over head with what I assume are working model trains that just weren't on. So cool decor overall. The wait staff was friendly and let me sit where I wanted for lunch. Came over and wiped down the table I chose that another must have just departed from. My waitress was prompt and checked with the right frequency. Asked for her thoughts on the if the cheeseburger salad was any good. She felt that was a better choice than the BLT salad I was debating over. The menu is American fair and a good variety. This was the part that lowered the score to 3 for me was the wait for my food. It took a little long for it to come out. There were not a lot of people in there that I could see but they may have been seated elsewhere. The salad came as advertised ground beef cheddar real bacon(I asked to make sure they weren't bacon bits) lettuce tomato and onion. Waitress suggested thousand Island dressing so I went with it. I would eat this again it was just what I wanted. Very tasty. If you want a fancy place this is not it but good food while having a beer this is probably a good choice. 7 of us met for lunch and none of our meals were great. The best was the steak quesadilla and the Ogdensburger but the macaroni salad that accompanied it had definitely been around a while. One salad was lettuce topped with a frozen slab of breaded chicken cut into bite-size pieces, bacon pieces from a bag, and a stale, greasy onion ring cut into bite-size pieces. The reuben sandwich was edible but not good. The grilled cheese and tomato veggie soup was good. The Arnold Palmer beverage was all lemonade instead of half lemonade and half tea. There is a lot of interesting memorabilia related to the restaurants history as a train depot. We were charged $1 for a take out container. We will not be going back. read more

The atmosphere at the Freight House is great - an old train station converted into a restaurant is always a welcome sign. The food on the other hand was...not as great. Our 2 year old daughter liked this place for two reasons: a) they have model trains clanking around the restaurant above your heads throughout your meal (pretty cool) and b) there was a massive wedding in their banquet/dining hall that had all attendees of the wedding coming to the bar to order drinks all night, which proved for great people watching. Perhaps that's why the food didn't impress us - they were busy w/ the 100+ guests in the other room. Regardless, I probably won't go back unless it is for a burger or something else cheap. I ordered what was supposedly the house speciality - the Ribeye (pictured), which was extremely fatty and with hardly any flavor. The dinner came with rolls (frozen/instant w/ cold butter in packets) and a salad w/ no spring greens (just iceberg and the dressing - a balsamic vinegarette was JUST balsamic vinegar - NO oil...very gross). The saving grace of the meal was the "rocky mountain potatoes", which were whipped w/ butter and herbs. Very tasty. Could have eaten an entire plate of those. My wife got Chicken Parmigiana, which was okay, but basically deep fried chicken w/ sauce and overcooked spaghetti. I'd say that if you are looking for a place to have a drink w/ great atmosphere, and possibly get some bar food (burgers, fried stuff, etc) this might be one of the best choices in Ogdensburg. The banquet hall also looked pretty cool (an old, long freight storage warehouse), so I could see it being a great place for parties/weddings as well. read more

We arrived and there was 1 employee working for the dinner hour. She was the waitress and the bar tender and the bus boy. She was running as fast as she could. Our dinner arrived and it was Luke warm to cold. She apologized for any snd all delays as we all were drinking wine and had to wait way too long for a refill. Very disappointing. read more

They even have white vinegar for us canucks! 2 meals with beers for less than $25? And I was stuffed, I really can't ask for much more. We have a vacation home near Ogdensburg and have been coming to the area for years but I wasn't aware of this place. The food was good, the staff was great and they even took the time to show us around the place and talked to us about its history. The prices were very reasonable. If you are looking for a nice sit down meal, this is a nice place. They have train sets running and it has a nice, quiet atmosphere. Food was good. Everything from steak to seafood to Italian. Started off at the bar for a cocktail before dinner. Bar area: More professional look for bartender, like a uniform similar to servers. This could be said for the owner also. Personal conversations by employees at the bar-- a no no. Internet search of herbs, spices and recipes should bring the quality and taste of the food up a few notches. The cream of mushroom soup lacked any kind of flavoring except the over abundance of salt. It wasn't creamy as advertised, but tasteless and greasy. Youtube has some awesome recipes for homemade soups. Waitress was very friendly but didn't ask if we wanted ice water and could use a little friendly shadowing for a bit. These suggestions aren't meant to be derogatory, but a few tips to upgrade this from a 2 star diner to a 4 star gem. Hope to see some improvements on my next visit through here next year. read more

It looked like a local charm kind of place. We were seated right away but it took over an hour to get our meals. There was a large group in front of us but the place was only about half full. What arrived was definitely not worth the wait. My son's steak was half gristle. My chicken parm was covered in flavorless red sauce that would not stick to to meat. The pasta was over cooked. I tasted one spoonful of their french onion soup, which had a gritty, mushy biscuit encrusted under the cheese. I sent it back. When we questioned the bill over the still charged soup the server left, bringing the manager over. He got in my face over the accusation that his soup wasn't good and how I had the audacity to request the removal on the bill. This man's attitude was very offensive to me and my guest. He accused me of not having good taste and gloated about his overpriced cheese. Finally he agreed to take half price off the soup. Certainly not going back and would not recommend anyone going.. I have been to this place twice recently (within 6 months) and had to perfectly opposite meals. The first time I went I had the brisket. I don't care too much for BBQ, but I decided to try something different. I am glad I did, the meal was terrific and all four of us had different meals and all loved them. The second time I went with my girlfriend. It was terrible. I had the chicken parm (not hard to screw up). The meal was cold to the touch.
