We have been here a few times for just wine tasting, but today we came for candle making and a taste of Freedom Run. It was very well organized and the employees were very friendly and helpful. We were greeted with a lot of information on what to expect and we placed our order of drinks and charcuterie while we make our candles. They had a few options, a glass of wine or flight. We chose a glass of wine and the charcuterie was a cheese and meat snack pack. It was perfect for the few hours we were there. I really enjoyed this winery! Despite the fact it was full of 21 year olds having a grand party. It's funny because at 21 I'd never ever thought about having a glass of wine. I was strictly MD 20/20 in any flavor! So the place is crowded but the hostess holds her own with the crowd. We are ushered into a secluded wine room to enjoy our flight of wine. The wine was great but the history of this place is amazing. Hence the name freedom run, it's another historic place that housed slaves as they escaped. There is also a original house on the property (however updated) that actually took in slaves on the run to Canada We also enjoyed some turkey deli sandwiches and brownies that were delicious It's not far from another winery. When we arrived at the Winery a party bus was right behind us - my husband and I wanted to beat the bus so we could get a tasting done in peace. Walking in the guy goes "you with the bus?" "God no." "Good answer." Bus was full of already drunk 20 something guys (from what I saw). The owner politely and sternly turned them away - they had capacity, they had space, they still turned them away (though legally they were so drunk already I don't think they had a choice if they wanted to). Regardless, the fact that, even during COVID, the supervisor wasn't willing to make it work was an A+ in my book. Not that I have anything against party buses but the majority of the guests were older, quiet, and just minding their own business. To have a bus full of rowdy 20 somethings would have completely killed the mood and I respect the hell out of Freedom Run for that. 4 wines for $5, stay as long as you'd like. We had the cheese and cracker plate - cheddar and Swiss cubes with a soft blue cheese wedge and cranberry goat cheese wedge. Very impressed! As red wine drinkers, we were surprised that our favorite wine was the 2018 Chardonnay - although we both enjoyed the Conspiracy Red as Well! This was to be our second to last stop for the day, but when we went in they were offering wine tasting)candle making for $20. So we decided to do it. This takes about an hour but it was fun. The food choices here were much better here than at other places. Chili, wedding soup, and charcuterie board. We really had fun making our candles and trying their wine. We were in town visiting family for Christmas and ended up coming into the Freedom Run Winery for my girlfriends birthday a few days after Christmas. On top of it being a birthday, everyone had a little cabin fever so we went in there about 8 deep. There wasn't a big enough table in the front room but Mark, who sold us the wine, said we could sit in the back at one of the larger tables. Mark allowed us to try some different wines and we ended up loving the Apple Jack. We even bought some to bring home with us. Overall the hospitality and experience was fantastic and we will definitely be back to visit Mark again. read more

Our first time on the Niagara Wine Trail and we live it. Freedom Run Winery was great. We had brunch and a wine tasting. Ham, cheese and spinach quiche with a spring mix salad. We tried 4 different wines and Catawba was our absolute favorite. The weather was perfect for patio seating. We enjoyed the breeze and the view. The Vineyard was absolutely beautiful. Everyone was kind, adhered to the social distancing guidelines and we had the space to feel comfortable. I would certainly go back to enjoy a bottle of Catawba wine with a small group. The Winery makes for a great outing. The Niagara Wine Trail offers a lot of options and they're all conveniently located near each other. read more

Niagra Wine Trail passes were secured well before we departed FL for our winter wonderland excursion. We saved our winery excursions for the final day of our trip being the majority of our time was dedicated to Canada. We only visited two wineries in total, but our time at Freedom Run Winery was priceless! Seriously, the quality of wine, warmth exuded by staff and experience are priceless. Not to mention, I'm an advocate of freedom and an avid runner so the winery's name speaks to my soul. Bri and Jen educated us on the various wines and the Pinot Noir Quest is my favorite hands down! Trailing only footsteps behind is the Cabernet Sauvignon Franc. My expectations for a NY winery were beyond superseded. I couldn't provide enough positive feedback if I tried! The owners, Sandra and her husband are hands on and treated us like family. The wine itself could easily dance with Napa competitors and the ambience of the property is truly spectacular. I struggle with love, but would totally tie the knot here if the opportunity presents itself. The property is beautifully equipped with a barn, large home for rent, and a vineyard. Fairytale wedding goals.... Yaaaas! Worse case scenario, another girls' trip for the books! ;) We stumbled upon this majestic location thanks to our wine passes, but I honestly think it was fate. The property, the wine and all this winery offers makes my heart smile. We began with our obligatory wine tasting and ended with pizza, wine and sharing life experience. It couldn't have been a better ending to a magnificent trip. I look forward to returning here in the fall or summer. In the interim, I shall order the Pinot Noir Quest when I get home because it's AMAZING! read more

This is a seriously wonderful place and it's right across the street from my family's house what a treat! They've got some super tasty wines here with my favorite their Catawba. They've got a beautiful tasting room up front with two large bars and an even larger event space out back. There are beautiful vineyard views from everywhere and you can enjoy the view of the hillside looking out over them. There's plenty of parking and the staff are always very friendly and helpful here. They do many different events, dinners, brunches, and other things throughout the year so check the schedule. I recently came to one of their Friday night summer movie nights. They set up a large screen in the back of the winery and showed a movie with drinks and snacks available. It was a fun time for sure! We got some dinner at their restaurant beforehand as well. read more

Enjoyed all the white wines sampled at this winery with an artistic flair. Truly the artistic touches, beautiful woodwork and the bricks on the interior walls just stood out. Captured my attention and admiration. Wines priced at reasonable price range, micro beers and pizza served. The restaurant that's run at the winery was not yet open for the season. This is a larger scale winery, so be ready for large groups coming in on busses (bachelorette parties), and some commotion. Still, a great experience. read more

I called the winery a few days before my trip to ensure they were open. Mark answered the phone and was extremely helpful. He provided information about things to do in the area and shared the Friday night fish fry menu with me. All of the food menu items sounded delicious. His kindness and recommendations brought me and my boyfriend to the winery on Friday where we met Carissa and she took it away. The detailed explanation of the wine options and her extended knowledge gave us a well rounded and wonderful experience. She was so kind and attentive. The outdoor seating area allowed for social distancing and wonderful enjoyment of the venue, which is stunning. We had the Cajun Broiled haddock and the Mac and cheese. The food was incredibly flavorful. The fish well seasoned, cooked to perfection and the Mac was TO DIE FOR. (Shout out to the chef) Carissa shared her personal buff. experience and her shining personality added a wonderful touch to the staffs overall "happy to be here energy" everyone was SO nice. We listened to music took photos and enjoyed the night. If you are in the area on a Friday night this winery is a one stop shop. A little disappointed by the visit to Freedom Run Winery. When we arrived like half of their wines to taste were sold out so we really only had the options of trying the sweet wines. The dry whites had two flavors to try and one was in bourbon barrels which is an acquired taste of wine for sure. What gave them more points was their beautiful building and the cool idea of doing tastings in the room with all of the wine barrels. There was also beautiful artwork that a member of my family actually bought right from the artist who was working there that day. Some of the staff was welcoming but others were not. If I knew they were out of so many wines I wish they said it at the door so we knew to maybe come back a different time. read more

This place was one of my favorites from the trip. First off, they had an artist in residence that made the beautiful blown glass decorations for the bar. Secondly, their wines were absolutely delicious and their staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The guy that was serving us spent a lot of time with each wine, asking us for our opinions on it, what we could taste, smell, etc, then would actually explain what was in it. We were a group of 3 but the bar and standing area is decently sized, so a group could be accommodated. Another winery in the trail that I wouldn't mind going to again. :) read more

By far my most favorite winery! All of their wines are excellent and there is something for everyone! On our visit the also had beer selections and pineapple shots for non wine lovers! There is a great looking menu with a Friday fish fry which i will go back for! The owner is friendly and awesome! The best part of our time at this winery was definitely Tammy, our tasting hostess. She was super fun, high energy and was generous with the samples! I really liked the Black Current wine, almost like a port, will be super yummy with prosecco. The worst part about the winery was checking out. The cashier attended to the drunk and rude group that butted in line ahead of us. When we told her she shouldn't have done that, she insincerely said that she did see us. Uh-huh. They clearly need someone else working the cash who can crowd control. The property is really beautiful and we'll definitely go back at some point and try a few of their other wines. read more

This one did feel a bit bigger and more corporate, but the nice thing about bigger was also they had a much wider selection of styles to try. So it didn't feel super personal, but unlike one other nearby winery, we still got as much attention as we needed in order to try what we wanted to. And again, I loved how many different wacky experiments were on display, not just your traditional wines (though they had some of that, too, and it was pretty good). Their ice wines were ok (not the worst, but not the best, either), and the blackcurrant wine was fun, but the standout was definitely the least wine-like: their "apple jack" was omg amazing (if you like apple juice and you like whiskey, it really did taste like they made whiskey out of apple juice. Outstanding.) I recommend bringing a friend, since they have some many wines, all of them were available to taste, but you only get 5 tastes per person (plus the ice wines, which are separate, and a couple dollars extra). read more

Quite possibly the rudest manager I've ever met. She was not going to honor what the other bar tender said...for $200 of wine. We almost left it...as she advised. To the owner, she should be demoted. The other person who checked us out said "that would've been your decision"...customer service had not met these folks. Yeesh. That being said, good wine, poor service. read more

The tasting room is very big and spacious, with beautiful art and blown glass decorations. The staff was friendly and accommodating even though I'm bad at names. They have a variety of wines at different prices. They aren't the most inexpensive winery I've been to, but I don't think they are terribly expensive either. I bought a bottle of Freedom Blue, a semi-sweet Riesling, for about $15. While Rosebud White from Niagara Landing is still my favorite white wine, Freedom Blue is still very tasty. I also tried the dry 2010 estate Riesling. I've read that wet stone notes are often favored in dry Rieslings when researching wine the other day so I was curious to experience it. If you've ever sipped wine and thought, "This is is good, but it would taste so much better if I was licking it from wet stone," this is the wine for you. Don't get me wrong. It was definitely a quality wine, just not for me. Sweet Freedom is a rosé with cherry and plum notes. I always like the idea of cherry and plum notes but they only seem to work for me in reds. Still, this is a relatively mellow rosé that isn't overly sweet. The dessert wine Nektar isn't mellow at all. It's made from locally grown black currants, and very tart. I think it would pair well with cheesecake. Freedom Run opens a bistro with patio seating seasonally and shows movies on Thursday nights in the summer. I'd love to make it a date night some time. read more

I always enjoy going to Freedom Run. I love to sit looking at the beautiful sunflowers while drinking wine. My sister and I went on a Sunday afternoon for a tasting. Erin was there playing guitar and singing. It was so relaxing n wonderful. We went back the next day and met a friend. I bought a bottle of Niagara white wine. He knew his wines, talked about the winery, and gave a good impression. He treated us like we were the only people in the tasting room and that he had nothing better to do than to wait on us. They had a nice 2010 Meritage blend and a 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon. I couldn't decide which one to buy. Stopped here for a tasting and was very pleasantly surprised. The sommelier was a young lady who earned her degree in winery operations. She was very knowledgable, friendly and responsive to our questions. She really did make the experience more enjoyable. I tried a black currant wine which was very unique and diverse. They have a cider bourbon type hard cider which I imagine would be great on a cool night around a fire. Barrels are visible from the tasting room and they have wine slushies and beer available. They do have a small food menu, as well as tables out back where you can sit and enjoy food and/or wine. I would recommend stopping here on the wine trail. We started our recent "Taste of the Trail" tour at Freedom Run. Although it wasn't my first time at the winery, I was (again) impressed with the beauty of the building and tasting room upon entering. The expansive space, high ceilings, brightness, and clean bathrooms give it a definitively different vibe than other wineries in the area, but it's a contrast that I enjoy. Like the other tastings that I have enjoyed here, I have found that the staff is more interested in having visitors walk away with a good sense of their wine selection than collecting obligatory tasting tickets after each sip. This time, our taste host walked me through the entire dry reds flight, giving me background and tasting notes with each one. This is not only impressive from a customer service standpoint, but also from a multitasking standpoint. The place was PACKED, but we never felt rushed or crowded. The Freedom Blue is one of my more favorite riselings in the region. Our tasting host mentioned that they're expanding their distribution circles, so I'm excited at the prospect of being able to buy a bottle down in the city.The meritage and cab sauv are also worth trying if you're into the drier side of wines, like I am. My fiancee and I have 2016 season passes for all Niagara Wine Trail events, so we will definitely return by default. However, even if we didn't have the tickets, I know that more visits to this winery would definitely be in my future. read more
