This isn't the sexiest of reviews but definitely a practical one…read more The city's Waste Reduction Center has become such a resource for my family as we renovate a duplex and most recently clean up from a fence that fell down following the recent snow and rain. It means that we can reliably dispose of large pieces of construction debris in a responsible manner. The Waste Reduction Center is nothing great to look at but again it's a place to dispose of large garbage. When you pull up with your truck, you're directed to the appropriate area for the waste you're wanting to offload, such as electronics, tires, appliances, tree limbs, construction debris, and furniture. You pay depending on the size of load and type of items. For one pick-up truck load, it costs $60. You then pull up to your area, and that's when you really get to let loose any pent-up energy. My husband and I unloaded the truck by flinging the wood and debris into the large heap. We created a game where we tried to see who could fling the wood the farthest. (He won.) My only wish is that they were open later. Their hours are Tuesday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Rather than wait for one of the semi-annual junk pick-up days, this is a great alternative.

Time for a dumpster! My husband had booked 10yd Dumpster for his parents after finding them on Yelp. He was able to secure one for us during a quieter week. They dialed him on a Tuesday afternoon to let them know the dumpster was in route and in a short time it was through our gate and in the backyard. It looked tiny when I saw it sitting there but it's held a lot of garbage and yard waste. It's quite full now and ready for pick up. If you're ready to declutter, this is a great call to make. It's been a cathartic week of making space and reorganizing our basement.

The annual Shelby County Hazardous Waste Collection is held the first Saturday in October. Early in…read morethe summer we were cleaning our garage and looked for options in getting rid of car batteries, a tractor battery, 30+ yr old road flares, 5 gallon containers of deck sealer, transmission & hydraulic fluid, as well as a variety of bug sprays and dormant fruit tree sprays. We found there are few affordable options so we held all the items for this annual drop off event. For a full month before the event our local newspaper had weekly ads with precise information on items that are accepted, a definition of hazardous waste and a list of items that are not accepted. The ad also had contact information should you have any questions. The date, time and location was clearly stated. The date of the event we loaded up our station wagon and went to the drop off. There were probably 30 cars in line ahead of us and I thought it may take hours for us to have our turn to unload our car. I was wrong. The event was very well organized with plenty of staff in all the key spots. As you approached the actual drop off there were city employees verifying how you heard of the event, that you were a resident of Shelby County, the types of things you were dropping off and how far you travel to get to the site. This information helps them file for the grant that pays for this event. Then we proceeded to the actual drop off area and employees brought carts to the back of the car and rapidly unloaded our very full car. Start to finish the process took less than 1/2 hour. Thank you Shelby County for sponsoring this annual event.

My daughter recently moved her furniture to a storage unit after selling her house and looking to buy a new one. Since she is single, and I'm retired, she enlisted my help getting moved. I was the primary contact for all moving issues. We used a different company (not Clean Slate) to move from her old house TO the storage unit. They were "decent" but I felt a little used and abused by their add on charges after the fact. I started looking for a different mover when it was time to move from the storage unit to the new home. All communications were via text. Clean Slate did meet another movers price and since they had so many 5 star reviews, I decided to go with them. There was one problem, they showed up an hour late. I considered giving them 4 stars due to showing up late, but that issue was offset by the quality of the two young men that did our move. Both guys were respectful and took good care of our possessions. They worked non stop for 4 hours. They even let this old man talk their ears off! I wouldn't hesitate to call them again.
