I spoke to James while in jail over the course of a few days. I would have been able to pay my own bail, but not for another 2-3 weeks, and I needed to be out of jail to do it. I paid a $600 retainer and never received a fully executed, countersigned agreement back -- which is basic legal procedure. After that, he went completely silent. For seven months, I received no invoices, no updates, no communication, and no evidence of any legal work performed. When I finally reached out to request the refund that is required under Virginia State Bar rules, he tried to gaslight me by suggesting that I was the one who disappeared, despite the clear paper trail showing he had not responded or provided anything at all for over half a year. The combination of total non-communication, no completed agreement, and refusal to return unearned funds is blatantly unethical.
