Always a fantastic trip up to LOTW seeing Nels and his crew. They do a great job keeping you on the fish.

I am writing this about the restaurant only. I come here a couple times a year (spring and fall)…read morefor lunch and dinners for several years now. The menu has not changed in the years I have been coming here. They have a couple vegetarian options (grilled cheese on kids menu, cheese pizza) and no vegan options. The salad bar is lackluster; my vegetarian friend took one look and said "Uh no thanks" which was my thought too when I looked at it previously. The dining room and bar areas are nice and clean, bathrooms are clean and you can see into the kitchen which also looks clean. The food is good, not amazing. The service in the bar and dining room is great and friendly. The views are great from the bar and dining room looking at the Rainy River. They have a nice patio to enjoy when the weather and bugs are cooperating.

Full disclosure: I hate winter anyway but wanted to experience winter fishing at least once ! Our guides were always cheery and pleasant, even when they would have to keep replacing the many jigs we kept losing in the rocks. Shore luches were always a necessity. Dining room meals were always great, the portions hearty, and staff friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, fish are not guaranteed, but a great time is! Whenever I hear of someone headed to LOTW for fishing, I try to steer them to Ballard's. Fish on!

This was the worst experience/stay our group has had in the last four years of ice fishing on lake…read moreof the woods. The day we checked in the owner had a bad attitude, and it never left. We walked into the establishment to check in, and there was only the bartender. Once we told him we were there to check in he ignored us. So we waited 10-15 minutes for someone to show up and acknowledge us. It was the owner. We told her who we were, and all she said was "you are the first cabin on the left coming in". then started walking away. So we asked her where do we pay? She got an attitude with that, and said "I guess you can pay now or you can just pay at the end of the trip". So that right there didn't set a good tone for how the trip was gonna go. After paying we went to our cabin. I do have to say the cabin that we stayed at was very nice. The next day we went to meet the guide at seven in the morning. Upon arriving they had let us know that there was a 3 foot ice heave that they were working on to let us pass. Which was not a problem at all safety first. We finally get out to the icehouse about 8:30 in the morning. There was very strong wind gusts up to 60 mph that day. So the guide came in to the ice house at 11:30 and told us we had to pack up and get off the ice due to safety reasons. We didn't find out till the next day that all the resorts around us let their customers stay out and fish so we were out a half day of fishing. So that night we went to the bar there to find out if we could find somebody to talk to you about what the game plan was for the next day. None of the guides were there, but the owner was sitting at the bar drinking. So we approached her just to find out if she knew what the plan was for tomorrow. Bad idea. As soon as we approached her and started talking she acted as though she was getting blindsided and attacked. So the attitude was instant. We wanted to try a little deeper water the next day, and we asked the guide if we could move. he said yes, so we had mentioned that to the owner and the owner got an attitude on top of that and said "there was no way because she was fully booked". We had one day of fishing left. With half of the day taken away from us that day, and instead of trying to accommodate us, she decided to accommodate the people that were coming in that were new. When we tried to say something else, she cut us off with more of an attitude and repeated herself with what she had just said. At that we said thank you and walked away. The next day we went out fishing, came back and we had no water in our cabin. no water to wash the dishes, no water to go to the bathroom, and no water to shower. We called the main office to tell them what was going on. It took them over an hour to have somebody come down to our cabin and take a look. We have nine guys and their solution was three five gallon buckets of water and a portable 5 gallon bucket crapper with poop bags. We never approached the owner on any of this only because we would just get another attitude from her. We will not be back and we will not be recommending this place to anyone. In fact we will be warning them. I do know it is at the resorts discretion on calling safety. But to have every single resort around you still let their customers fish through that weather was it really that bad for up there? Or was it that we were the only customers that day and they didn't feel the need to deal with getting us off later in the day?
